Job Description Job Title: Mechanical Assembly Technician – Medical Device Manufacturing Job Description This role focuses on precision mechanical and electro-mechanical assembly for innovative wearable biosensor products in a fast-paced, start-up manufacturing environment. You will perform small, detailed assemblies, support batch production processes, and collaborate closely with research and development engineers to execute both standard and non-standard builds. The position requires strong manual dexterity, excellent documentation habits, and the ability to manage multiple long-cycle processes while maintaining high quality and productivity standards. Responsibilities • Perform mechanical assembly of small and intricate components, including building complete units independently once trained., • Carry out repetitive, well-defined assembly processes while consistently meeting daily production goals., • Execute wire soldering tasks using hand tools and maintain high-quality solder joints., • Conduct microscope-based assembly work and perform detailed visual inspections to verify product quality., • Support non-standard and prototype builds in collaboration with research and development engineers., • Review, follow, and provide feedback on engineering documents, work instructions, and batch records., • Update computer records and paper-based documentation accurately, including raw material logs and batch record reports., • Measure, track, and record the amount of raw materials used in the manufacturing lab area., • Run company-developed macros and equipment to set times and voltages, operate sensors, and prepare products for calibration., • Prepare and handle solutions and enzymes that are deposited on sensor layers as part of the glucose-sensing process., • Execute batch processes starting with multiple sensors at a time, managing long process steps while initiating and monitoring additional batches., • Monitor multiple workstreams simultaneously, returning to earlier batches as they complete waiting steps and moving them to the next stage., • Use hand tools, microscopes, multimeters, and other lab equipment to assemble, test, and inspect products., • Perform pipetting and other laboratory techniques as part of reagent and kit assembly and sensor preparation., • Carry out dimensional inspections and record dimensional data to ensure components meet specifications., • Troubleshoot basic assembly and process issues and contribute ideas for process improvement., • Maintain excellent documentation practices for all work performed, including paper travelers and batch records., • Communicate effectively with engineering and manufacturing leadership to provide feedback on processes, instructions, and build performance., • Manage time effectively to stay on top of long cycle times, waiting periods, and overlapping tasks without losing focus., • Collaborate closely with a cross-functional team, including staff members, and actively participate in a culture of accountability and open communication., • Adapt to changing build schedules, evolving processes, and start-up conditions, including learning and executing a large number of different processes., • Follow all ISO Class 8 cleanroom policies and procedures, including gowning requirements and cleanliness standards., • Previous mechanical and manual assembly experience in a manufacturing or laboratory environment., • Experience with semi-automated manufacturing processes and equipment., • Hands-on experience with mechanical assembly, including small and detailed components., • Proficiency with wire soldering and use of hand tools., • Experience with microscope assembly and visual inspection of small components., • Familiarity with batch record documentation and working with paper travelers., • Experience in cartridge assembly, reagent manufacturing kit assembly, or similar medical assembly work., • Previous experience performing research and development or supporting R&D builds in a production setting., • Comfort working with laboratory tools and techniques such as pipetting and using multimeters., • Ability to perform dimensional inspection and record dimensional data accurately., • Strong time management skills, including the ability to manage long cycle times and multiple overlapping processes., • Ability to sit and stand for extended periods and comfortably lift up to 25 lbs., • Strong communication skills to effectively provide feedback to engineering and manufacturing leadership., • Demonstrated willingness to learn new processes and adapt to a dynamic, start-up environment., • Experience with prototype or non-standard builds and translating engineering and R&D instructions to the production floor., • BG in driving pilot builds or helping to ramp up new manufacturing lines., • Strong documentation experience and familiarity with good documentation practices in regulated or quality-focused environments., • Comfort working with paper-based systems and maintaining accurate, legible records., • Experience in laboratory, medical device, or biosensor manufacturing environments., • Troubleshooting skills and a continuous improvement mindset for process enhancement., • High level of adaptability and self-motivation, especially in start-up or rapidly changing production settings., • Demonstrated ability to stay focused during long process steps and waiting periods., • Commitment to accountability, openness, and speaking up when issues or improvement opportunities arise. Work Environment The role is based in an ISO Class 8 cleanroom manufacturing and laboratory environment with strict adherence to established policies and procedures. You will work with a variety of equipment, including microscopes, multimeters, semi-automated tools, pipettes, and specialized macros and systems used to set times, voltages, and run sensor processes. Standard cleanroom attire is required, including gown, mask, gloves, hair cover, and shoe covers, and all cleanliness rules must be followed, such as no nail polish, artificial nails, or fragrances. Work involves both sitting and standing throughout the day, handling small components, and lifting up to 25 lbs as needed. Shift times may start at 6:00 a.m., 6:30 a.m., or 8:00 a.m., and you must be flexible to adjust within these windows. Overtime is expected based on production needs, with the possibility of Saturday work communicated in advance. The environment is fast-paced and dynamic, with a large number of different processes to learn—potentially over 100—and some processes have cycle times of several hours, requiring sustained focus and patience. Adaptability, comfort with changing build schedules, and a willingness to work additional hours when needed are key to succeeding in this setting. Job Type & Location This is a Contract to Hire position based out of San Diego, CA. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $20.00 - $20.00/hr.
