Job Description \n The primary objective of this job is to improve quality, treat and support patients and family members in a caring professional manner and fulfill the hospital’s mission to serve our patients and their families by. \n Job Responsibility \n 1.Responsible for the smooth functioning of activities during the surgical procedure. This person is garbed in sterile attire and must remain within the sterile field. 2.Knowledgeable of the proposed surgical procedure anticipates the surgeons needs and efficiently carries out instructions by the surgeon, anesthesiologist and circulating nurse. 3.Assists the circulating nurse in the assembly and preparation of all supplies, instruments and equipment required for proposed surgical procedure utilizing physician resource map as a tool. 4.Assists the circulating nurse in the proper opening of sterile supplies onto the sterile field. In this function, the OR technician should be mindful and caution should be taken to avoid the opening of supplies which may be unnecessary for the procedure. 5.Checks order and tidiness and proper functioning of suction, lighting and equipment. 6.Is knowledgeable in the positioning of patients for surgical procedure and assists when indicated. 7.Performs surgical scrub per hospital procedure after removing all jewelry and nail polish. Artificial tips or overlays are prohibited. 8.Prepares drapes, instruments and sutures on sterile field for efficient delivery of surgical procedure under strict aseptic technique. 9.Visually inspects all instrumentation and operative scopes for proper cleanliness, functioning and visualization prior to commencement of procedure. Any unusual findings shall be reported to the circulating nurse for corrective action. 10.Performs initial, relief and closing counts with the circulating nurse-providing visualization of all items counted as per hospital policy. 11.Verifies operative site with circulating room nurse. 12.Assists in the gowning and gloving of the surgical team and draping of the sterile field. 13.Responsible for maintaining the integrity, safety and efficiency of the sterile field by maintaining constant visualization of the operative field. 14.Responsible for immediately reporting any breaks aseptic technique and or complications to the circulating nurse so corrective action can be implemented. 15.Limits conversation at the operative field to promote a high level of infection control during procedure. 16.Responsible for the labeling, mixing and dispensing of all medications/contrast media under the direct supervision of the circulating nurse on a sterile field as indicated by the attending physician. 17.May assist in the cutting of surgical sutures and/or hold Adson forceps during skin stapling upon closure of the operative site under the direct supervision of the attending physician. 18.May irrigate the operative site under the direct supervision of the attending physician. 19.May suction blood and or fluids to provide adequate visualization of the operative field under the direct supervision of the attending physician. 20.May suction smoke from artery or laser above the operative field under the direct supervision of the attending physician. 21.May support an extremity to improve visualization of the surgical site under the direct supervision of the attending physician. 22.May hold retractors after placement by the attending physician. 23.Secures all specimens retrieved during operative procedure, notifies the circulating nurse of the identity of the specimen given by the attending surgeon. 24.Continuously cleans surgical instrumentation of gross debris throughout the surgical procedure to assist in proper decontamination postoperatively. 25.Responsible for packing all instruments in there intended container according to hospital policy and procedure. Any broken or damaged instruments must be brought to central/sterile for decontamination and delivered to the instrument manager for repair. 26.Assists circulating nurse in cleaning room assuring that all trash and line is disposed of properly in the appropriate container. No trash or linen is to remain on the floor or Operating Room table. 27.Disassembles suction canisters for proper disposal by environmental. 28.Verifies the correct labeling and number of surgical specimens with the circulating nurse. 29.Remains in room after operative procedure is completed, assists in transfer of patient to stretcher or bed using proper body mechanics. 30.If surgical procedure is completed and patient is on hold for a space in PACU the scrub technician may leave the operating room suite to assemble the next case set up and equipment, provided the anesthesiologist and circulating nurse remain with the patient. 31.Transports instrumentation and specimens to soiled utility room. All must be contained/covered during transport. Instruments shall be placed inside transport cart. Instruments that will be utilized for a subsequent procedure must be delivered directly to central sterile for immediate decontamination. 32.Specimens must be recorded in log for pathology or bacteriology. If indicated, Formalin should be placed in jar as per policy with specimen. Said jar shall be labeled with patient’s name and source of specimen, biohazard/formalin label applied, and placed in biohazard bag after assuring lids are secure so that leakage does not occur. Specimen slip shall be in place. 33.Understands and demonstrates the importance of efficiency and time management. 34.Identifies and demonstrates cost containment on each procedure. Under the direction of the appropriate level supervisor, the DSP performs various tasks and duties to assure that the living environment is properly maintained and kept in a clean, neat and orderly condition. • Performs/teaches developmentally disabled individuals routine housekeeping duties such as dusting, washing floors and walls, cleaning bathrooms, and vacuuming rugs., • Assists developmentally disabled individuals in bed making., • Follows safety procedures in living unit by mopping up spills, reporting unsafe conditions, teaches and reinforces fire safety procedures. Checks to see that fire exits are clear, night-lights and exit signs on, windows locked, etc., • Stores supplies and assures that storage areas are kept in a neat and orderly condition., • Responsible for storage and replacement of linens., • May assist in various household inventories., • Performs/teaches minor and routine maintenance tasks such as changing light bulbs, fuses, replacement of faucet washers; and obtains repair services for appliances., • Performs/teaches routine removal of trash, cleaning of trash containers, ashtrays, etc., • Teaches/performs outdoor maintenance tasks and repairs of residence, yard, garden, walks; reports need for or obtains repair services for automobiles, vans, mowers, etc., • Checks fire equipment and reports any malfunction., • Teaches and reinforces use of a variety of communication skills., • Guides individuals through motor exercises designed to increase physical coordinative functions., • Teaches and reinforces principles of human growth and development, including human sexuality, as determined by each person's developmental level and program plan., • Teaches acceptable work habits, e.g., punctuality, dress and grooming, to enable individuals to develop readiness for work outside the home, or in support of individuals' habilitative goals., • Accompanies developmentally disabled individuals to community activities including worksites, cultural, religious and social events, day programs, and visits to health practitioners; aids them in developing awareness and use of community resources and in interacting with others., • Provides support for maximum community integration., • Transports/arranges for transport of individuals to community events; and aids them in development of their mobility skills., • Maintains an adequate supply of and accounting of personal clothing and possessions., • Teaches money management principles to developmentally disabled individuals; and completes/aids in completion of banking activities., • Provides an accurate accounting of all financial transactions made on behalf of individuals in their care., • Helps developmentally disabled individuals to develop/maintain positive interpersonal relationships with their peers, with others in their families, and with others in the community. Aids in explaining feelings, resolving conflicts, teaching/reinforcing acceptable means of dissipating frustration, and anger., • If pets are in the home, teaches/assists with their feeding, grooming, and care., • Teaches/supervises/participates in a variety of leisure and recreational activities, crafts projects, seasonal and permanent home decoration; assists in planning, supervising and conducting holiday celebrations selected by residents and staff., • May accompany developmentally disabled individuals to dances, camping trips, swimming, horseback riding, basketball, or other sports; assists in selection and teaching of appropriate community inclusion leisure activities., • Observes and reports on behavior and specific responses to programming, medication, interpersonal relationships, etc., • Actively participates at staff meetings by communicating observations concerning progress and reaction to various therapy programs., • At meetings, may suggest alternative programs or procedures based on experience with the individual’s habilitation plan., • Records all significant behavioral responses in prescribed format., • Participates in the development of individual program and habilitation plans., • May be asked to assist in the orientation and training of other staff., • Knowledge of policies and procedures of OPWDD, as well as state and federal regulations as they apply to the care and treatment of the developmentally disabled., • Knowledge of active treatment programs as they relate to the developmentally disabled., • Currently AMAP certified or able to become certified within six months of hire., • Currently SCIP-R certified or able to become certified within six months of hire., • Currently CPR and First Aid certified or able to become certified within six months, • Direct Care experience with people with mental and/or physical disabilities. AMAP, SCIP-R, CPR/SFA certified.
