Job Description Fresno Discovery Center is a nonprofit science center on a mission to ignite curiosity and imagination by providing hands-on STEAM experiences to Fresno's youth. For more than 50 years, Fresno Discovery Center has been serving families in California's Central Valley on our 5.5-acre property which features hands-on exhibits, a cactus garden, and outdoor spaces where kids can dig for fossils, meet live animals, and discover the wonders of science through play. Our vision is to create a future where curiosity leads, creativity, thrives, and every child discovers their potential. We are currently seeking an experienced Executive Director to lead our continued growth with programs, exhibits, and events that bring science to life both on-site, and out in the community. The Executive Director will be responsible for providing leadership and strategic direction to advance the mission and vision of Fresno Discovery Center. This role will oversee daily operations, program development, staff and volunteer management, and community engagement. The Executive Director will partner closely with the Board of Directors to build community partnerships, secure funding, and ensure the long-term sustainability and growth of the center. As the public face of the organization, the Executive Director will champion equitable access to STEAM education and foster an inclusive, inspiring learning environment for all Central Valley youth. Duties include, but are not limited to: • Actively demonstrate and promote the vision and mission of Fresno Discovery Center (FDC) to management, employees, volunteers and the community at large., • Evaluate existing policies and services in relation to the Center's strategic plan and goals, and recommend changes and additions as appropriate to the Board of Directors., • Represent and advocate for FDC locally, and at regional and national levels as a spokesperson to effectively present the FDC mission and initiatives to media, funders, and partner organizations., • Maintain fiscal responsibility for the FDC annual operating budget, ensuring compliance with applicable laws and regulations., • Regularly monitor operational expenses, revenues, and projections to ensure the financial stability of the organization., • Lead the organization's grant strategy by identifying funding opportunities, writing and submitting grant proposals both directly and in conjunction with staff, and managing relationships with grantmakers to secure sustainable funding., • Actively engage in resource development by overseeing event planning, community outreach activities, and seeking potential community resources and partnerships with organizations such as local media outlets, government agencies, school districts, etc., • Direct, delegate, and oversee programmatic activities in support of FDC's vision, mission and strategic initiatives including planning and daily operations relating to Center activities, donor and volunteer appreciation events, committees, etc., • Provide leadership for and oversight of FDC management staff, ensuring they receive effective training, coaching, evaluation, recognition, etc., • Provide direction and oversight on staff recruitment, training, performance management, retention, succession planning, and personnel policies., • Collaborate with the leadership team to maintain a positive, professional, service-focused workplace culture., • Cultivate strong working relationships with the Board of Directors including regular meetings and comfortable dialogue outside of scheduled Board meetings., • Present staff interests or concerns to the Board and represent the Board to the staff., • Keep Board members informed of relevant decisions, accomplishments and issues in a timely manner through formal agenda items or informal communications., • Effectively represent FDC to the public at large, including attendance at community outreach events. Encourage the public to visit, volunteer for, or contribute to the organization. The ideal candidate will possess the following: • Bachelor's degree in Business Administration, Education, or another closely related field., • 5+ years of executive level management experience. (preferably in a nonprofit environment), • 1+ years of experience in youth STEAM education., • Demonstrable knowledge of, and appreciation for, STEAM-based education and its value for positively impacting the lives of Central Valley youth., • Experience in effective nonprofit marketing, promotion, and development., • Proficiency in nonprofit budgeting and financial management., • Working knowledge of California Labor law and compliance practices., • Ability to develop and implement innovative, creative, age-appropriate STEAM-based programs and activities., • Ability to effectively oversee and direct the work of others, leading by example to demonstrate compliance with organization policies and procedures., • Effective communication skills both verbally and in writing and to large and small groups., • Ability to manage and prioritize multiple tasks under deadline pressure.
