As a Senior Silicon Photonics Engineer, you’ll play a key role in defining photonic architecture and developing new passive and active components. In your first year, you’ll own simulations, and design system PICs, working hands-on from concept through implementation. Key Responsibilities: * Design and simulate photonic components and system-level functionality and performance * Design schematics, draw layout, as well as work with layout engineers to create photonic systems and component test structures. * Own and drive complex tapeouts to completion on time * Work closely with external manufacturing partners to inform component design, process integration, and performance monitoring. * Develop component and system-level optical testing plans and collaborate with the test team to develop optoelectronic testing setups, perform hands-on photonic component and optical system-level testing. * Work with the product team to transition/scale testing for performance evaluation. * Collaborate with cross-functional teams to integrate our photonic chips into the LIDAR system and evaluate their performance * Contribute to the expansion of our IP portfolio through patent filing Qualifications: * Ph.D. with research in silicon photonics with 2+ years’ experience * Proven track record leading one or more successful silicon photonics foundry tapeouts * Strong understanding of planar waveguide optics, both passive components such as waveguides, multiplexers/demultiplexers, tapers, couplers and active such as waveguide detectors, lasers and optical amplifiers * Strong understanding of photonic system-level design concerns * Strong understanding of photonic component-level design concerns * Experience in photonic fabrication * Good understanding of CMOS manufacturing process steps and constraints on the design of photonic devices * Proficient with mainstream photonic components and systems simulation packages such as Lumerical, Tidy3D and COMSOL * Proficient with complex optoelectronic lab testing techniques and equipment, necessary to validate designs, including high speed detectors, oscilloscopes, spectrum analyzers, precision positioning setups * Collaborative in a multi disciplinary startup environment, ability to work both with local and remote team members as well as with our manufacturing partners * Independent, analytical thinker, comfortable in a fast-paced dynamic frontier technology environment Benefits Package: * Competitive base salary and meaningful equity package. * Comprehensive health benefits (Medical, Dental, Vision). * Unlimited PTO and paid company holidays. * Team events and company meetups. * Complimentary lunch provided daily at our NYC office. We are looking for a mechanical engineer who embodies true product ownership—someone who can think at the system level, drive key design decisions, and take responsibility for how all the physical elements of the product interconnect. Key Responsibilities * Define and implement end-of-line test strategies for LiDAR sensors, validating system-level performance (range, velocity, reflectivity, etc.). * Lead the development of photonic wafer-level test (WLT) strategies and tooling in collaboration with photonic design and foundry partners. * Develop automated test fixtures and software to support both EOL and WLT in a production setting. * Translate lab-level validation methods into robust and scalable production tests across optical, electrical, and mixed-signal domains. * Partner with external contract manufacturers and test vendors to stand up and scale production test infrastructure; support factory bring-up and operator training. * Drive test coverage, throughput, and cost optimization in both low- and medium-volume manufacturing. * Lead root cause investigations for test failures across the stack and work cross-functionally to implement fixes. * Own and continuously improve statistical process control (SPC), yield tracking, and test data analytics across the production lifecycle. * Support reliability and environmental testing (e.g. thermal cycling, vibration, shock) for product qualification. Qualifications * Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Optical Engineering, Physics, or a related discipline. * 5+ years of experience in production test engineering with a focus on LiDAR systems, photonic components, or optical sensors. * Proven expertise in system-level testing for LiDAR, imaging, or other complex electromechanical/optical systems. * Hands-on experience developing and deploying automated test setups (Python preferred), including test instrumentation and DAQ systems. * Proven track record in statistical process control, yield analysis, and high-volume data-driven decision-making. * Demonstrated experience owning test strategy and implementation in a manufacturing or pilot-line environment. * Familiarity with test methodologies for photonic integrated circuits or optical wafers (e.g., wafer probing, passive/active alignment, coupling efficiency). * Experience interfacing with contract manufacturers and external test vendors. Position Overview We’re looking for a Photonic Layout Engineer to support the design and development of advanced photonic integrated circuits (PICs) for our FMCW LiDAR systems. In this role, you’ll translate schematic designs into manufacturable layouts, integrating complex passive and active photonic components alongside electrical and mechanical interfaces. You’ll work extensively with GDSII layouts and use Python scripting to automate and streamline layout and verification processes, including DRC and LVS. Experience with PIC layout is important, as you’ll contribute to high-density, high-performance photonic chips that push the limits of integration. You’ll start by working closely with two senior silicon photonics designers. As the team grows, you’ll collaborate with additional layout engineers, photonics designers, and modeling engineers. The role offers a clear growth path—from owning small test structures to eventually managing full tapeout submissions. Location: NYC preferred, with remote options available.
