Job Title: Leadership Academy Director Classification: Non-Union, Exempt, 35-Hour Work Week Reports to: CEO Grade Level: 30 Overview: The Greenlining Institute works towards a future where communities of color can build wealth, live in healthy places filled with economic opportunity, and are ready to meet the challenges posed by climate change. The Opportunity: For over 25 years, The Greenlining Leadership Academy has prepared the next generation of multi-ethnic leaders to advance racial equity in policy in California. Since its inception, the Leadership Academy has trained more than 1,000 alumni through our Policy and Legal Fellowship Program, Summer Associate Program, Internship, and Residential Leadership Program at Casa Joaquin Murrieta. Graduates of the Academy have gained experience in policy and advocacy impacting communities of color, through Greenlining’s core policy areas. Created by the Greenlining Founders in 1996, the Academy has been at the forefront of leadership development for racial equity and policymaking, with alumni now excelling in decision-making positions in every sector including government, nonprofit, foundations, financial institutions, education and more. Our graduates include a California Supreme Court justice, a member of the San Francisco Board of Supervisors, and heads of major philanthropic institutions. The Leadership Academy Director will work closely with the CEO, Program Directors and Leadership Academy staff to ensure the successful management of Leadership Academy Programs and to support the advancement of the mission and vision of the Greenlining Institute. The Leadership Academy Director will be responsible for training and empowering the next generation of multi-ethnic leaders to serve as effective change agents for racial equity and justice. This role will build internal and external support to ensure strategic growth and maximum impact of the Leadership Academy programs and alumni network. Supervisory Responsibilities: Recruits, interviews, hires, and trains department staff and Leadership Academy participants. Oversees the daily workflow and operations of the department. Directly supervises Associate Directors, professional staff, and program support staff. Provides program supervision for fellows, summer associates, and interns. Leads outreach and recruitment efforts to attract a diverse pool of applicants for the Leadership Academy’s three core programs (Fellowship, Summer Associateship, and Casa Joaquín Murrieta program), managing 350–450 applications annually. Collaborates with middle managers to support supervision and development of program participants. May manage external consultants and vendors as needed. Contributes to cross-departmental collaboration and organizational training initiatives. Delivers constructive and timely performance evaluations for department staff and Leadership Academy participants. In consultation with HR, handles discipline and termination of employees in accordance with company policies & or Greenlining’s collective bargaining agreement. Program Responsibilities: Strategic Direction and Oversight of Program Directs Greenlining’s public policy and leadership development programs including the Summer Associates, Fellowship, and the Casa Joaquín Murrieta program. Integrate the Greenlining Academy Alumni Association (GAAA) programs and coach the alumni board to amplify the impact and engagement of the alumni network. Drive a vision for significantly expanding the scope and impact of The Leadership Academy, including expanding our program offerings, partnerships, and engagement along the professional life cycle Create a container for a collaborative, inclusive and trusting learning environment that helps participants form strong connections to their cohort and gain confidence to be their whole self wherever they go. Work collaboratively with directors and policy supervisors to design individual project assignments that provide meaningful opportunities to apply the Academy teachings to the policy work. Ensure participants can add concrete accomplishments to their body of work by authoring white papers, speaking engagements, and other meaningful contributions. Expand learning opportunities for all staff to help all continue to develop leadership and professional skills. Evaluate impact of the leadership program with clear measures of success and help develop a narrative for our model showcasing its short-term and long-term impacts. Curriculum Design Oversee the development and/or implementation of curricula to train multi-ethnic leaders in racial equity, leadership development, advocacy, public policy analysis and research, and other relevant competencies. This includes the development of training workshops and the creation of strategic networking opportunities for participants. Teach participants how to connect with different audiences and use different tools (such as public testimonies, white papers, or social media publications) to promote their ideas and solutions. Teach participants how to advocate the Greenlining way, using insider strategies when engaging directly with policymakers or private sector leaders; and, using outsider strategies when engaging allied coalitions and community-based groups. Facilitate experiential learning activities that engage the minds and hearts of participants to help them connect their unique lived experiences to their purpose as racial justice leaders. Staff Leadership & Management over a Program Proactively aligns individual workplans with team level goals and organizational aims Uses rigorous methods and systems to keep projects on track and achieve team goals Cultivates growth in all core competency areas including Communication, Collaboration, Strategic Innovation, Technical Expertise, Adaptability and Accountability Encourages professional development by promoting a growth mindset, providing stretch opportunities and coaching staff and Academy participants on career progression strategies Support an equitable and inclusive workplace culture that attracts, retains, and motivates a high-performing team Support staff alignment with organizational priorities and collaboration across teams Carries out supervisory responsibilities while adhering to Greenlining’s policies and applicable employment laws Fundraising and Financial Management Prepares and manages the team’s budget to ensure organizational and programmatic needs are met while operating within legal and budget parameters Provides oversight of the CASA budget, legal and regulatory compliance Maintain effective financial practices and stewardship of the organization’s resources Support the implementation of annual fundraising plans and other revenue models to ensure long-term financial sustainability Work in partnership with the Development team to secure funding necessary to meet the team's budgetary needs Develops, maintains and monitors all internal accounting systems for all Leadership Academy programs Communications and Stakeholder Relations Broadly and strategically promotes and positions the activities of the team’s goals to ensure that the organization is consistently presented to relevant stakeholders Guides the development of a coordinated communications strategy with the communications team to effectively tell the story of the Academy and incorporate strategic communications into our programming Establish sound working relationships and cooperative arrangements with the Greenlining Coalition and other allied community groups and partner organizations Represents the programs, policy positions, and point of view of the organization to agencies, community partners, funders, and the general public via writing, speaking, press interviews, conferences and other engagements Develops strong relationships with existing funders and cultivate relationships with new supporters Supports the GAAA board with regular communication touchpoints and engagements with the alumni network The scope of responsibilities is not limited to those listed above and may change as organizational needs evolve. Organizational StewardshipQUALIFICATIONS/REQUIREMENTS 1 Years of Executive Non-Profit Leadership Experience role with strong track record of success 5 years of experience in implementing innovative leadership development programs, learning and development, organizational psychology and/or public policy analysis including prior management experience in a non-profit setting. Bachelor’s Degree. A master's degree or equivalent experience is preferred. Demonstrated commitment to Greenlining’s mission, vision, values and goals and an understanding of the intersectionality in Greenlining’s work, culture, and workplace Experience with implementing programming with a racial equity lens that uplifts BIPOC individuals’ lived experiences. A consensus-builder with strong emotional intelligence to relate to, understand and lead a team Demonstrated ability to develop and sustain people-centric engagement strategies to motivate strong learning cohorts in a welcoming and inclusive atmosphere Ability to effectively develop and facilitate outcomes-oriented meetings, retreat activities, and/or workshops Skilled in mediation and/or conflict resolution strategies Excellent verbal and written communication skills and the ability to confidently speak and represent the organization in local, regional and national forums Fiscal management and fundraising experience including experience cultivating relationships with funders and providing strategic input into grant proposal development Proficient in Microsoft Suite & Google Suite. Experience using tools for virtual or remote learning including using Zoom, Hangout, Slack or Google. Ability and willingness to travel, as needed, to meetings and conferences throughout the state and possibly other locations. This position is a hybrid role based out of Oakland, CA, where a minimum 2 days are required to be in person in the office. There may be a need for 3 days in office during the summer for supervising the summer program. SALARY: The Salary band for this full-time, exempt role is $128,566 - $154,032. The final offer is dependent on qualifications and experience. New hires can reasonably expect an offer between$128,566 - $141,299.
