The Mechanical Engineering team operates within the developing Mechanical Engineering Centre of Excellence (CoE). The mechanical engineer is responsible for delivering high‑quality expertise across IA&R projects, contracts, and operations. The role involves conducting independent assessment/peer review of safety case related documentation to ensure that systems, technologies, and processes are safe, effective, compliant, and future‑ready. • Provide mechanical engineering support to projects, contracts, and operational teams across IA&R., • Support delivery teams with technical advice, problem‑solving, and assurance., • Providing formal independent nuclear safety and technical assessment/peer review of documents relating to nuclear propulsion plant systems and components, and delivering written assessment output, which may be presented to relevant safety and technical committees., • Performing assurance activities (inspection, advice and assessment) for all types of mechanical systems and components that provide nuclear safety functions in reactor primary and secondary systems, and also dockside facilities., • Work collaboratively with other engineering disciplines, quality, safety, and delivery teams., • Communicate engineering requirements, constraints, and solutions clearly to stakeholders., • Contribute to knowledge sharing, technical forums, and best practice development., • Support mentoring and development of graduate and early‑career engineers where appropriate., • Technical competence and experience in mechanical engineering, demonstrated through an Engineering or Scientific Degree., • Knowledge and understanding of the ageing/failure mechanisms of high‑integrity pumps, valves and other reactor system components., • Experience of relevant mechanical design and safety standards., • Experience within a highly regulated industry such as nuclear or aerospace., • Strong awareness of engineering risk, safety, and quality requirements; an ability to critically assess complex technical and safety arguments, based upon knowledge and understanding and communicate the findings effectively., • Ability to work effectively across a matrix organisation., • Ability to clearly communicate with customers and stakeholders both verbally and in written form., • Commitment to professional development and contribution to CoE development., • Experience of conducting checking or IPR of others' work., • Knowledge of Pressurised Water Reactor systems for naval propulsion or civil power generation applications., • Experience relating to high‑integrity mechanical handling equipment in naval or civil nuclear, or other safety critical applications., • Understanding of nuclear safety case requirements, including knowledge of the Office for Nuclear Regulation's (ONR) Safety Assessment Principles (SAPs) and Technical Assessment Guides (TAGs).
