In House Legal Counsel (Construction) Leeds Hours per week 37.5 Competitive salary Hybrid working (3 days in the office) The Role Reporting to the Head of Legal, you will work closely with stakeholders across the business, delivering pragmatic legal advice and supporting a wide range of commercial, governance and compliance matters. Key Responsibilities: • Supporting the Head of Legal on a broad range of in-house legal matters, • Reviewing and negotiating contracts for professional consultancy services, including: NDAs, Appointments, Collateral warranties, Novations and Intra-group arrangements., • Negotiating directly with clients and supply-chain partners across sectors such as the built environment, energy, industry and professional services, • Advising on legal, insurance, governance and compliance matters, • Providing support on both formal and informal contentious issues What the Role Involves • Reviewing, drafting and negotiating professional services contracts in line with governance frameworks and risk appetite, while enabling commercial outcomes, • Working with both bespoke agreements and standard industry forms (e.g. NEC, FIDIC, ACE), • Supporting privacy, data protection and compliance governance, • Communicating effectively with internal and external stakeholders to identify, manage and mitigate legal risk, • Providing technical guidance, training and mentoring to colleagues, • Contributing actively to the legal team’s technical development and continuous improvement, • Maintaining awareness of legal and regulatory developments affecting the business, • Demonstrating strong commercial awareness and alignment with organisational strategy, • Liaising with insurers, brokers and external counsel where required About You To succeed in this role, you will bring a commercial, solution-focused mindset and enjoy working collaboratively within a professional services environment. Key Skills & Attributes: • Strong commercial awareness with a client-focused approach, • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to explain legal concepts clearly to non-legal stakeholders, • Ability to assess complex legal issues quickly and present practical, proportionate advice, • A pragmatic, curious and flexible approach to work, • Strong organisational skills with the ability to prioritise competing demands, • Effective problem-solving and contingency-planning capabilities, • Commitment to continuous professional development and supporting others’ learning, • High attention to detail and pride in delivering accurate, timely work Experience & Knowledge • Experience within the engineering consultancy and/or construction sector, • Understanding of the Building Safety Act 2022 and its implications, • Experience advising on data privacy and information governance, both internally and across project portfolios, • Background in contract and commercial negotiations and insurance-related matters Qualifications • Degree in a relevant discipline or equivalent qualification, • Qualified Solicitor (2–4 years PQE) with a current practising certificate or Legal Executive / CILEX qualified, • 3+ years’ legal experience, gained either in-house or in private practice
