Lecturer, Instructor or Assistant Professor in Genetic Counseling (in Medicine) at CUIMC The Center for Precision Medicine and Genomics (CPMG) in the Department of Medicine, under the direction of Dr. Ali Gharavi, is a growing program that comprehensively integrates genetics and genomics into patient care, research, and training, across medical specialties.The CPMG is seeking a genetic counselor to join the growing team of genetic counselors, researchers, bioinformaticians, and clinicians in a full-time position. This position carries a faculty appointment in the Department of Medicine at the Vagelos College of Physicians & Surgeons (VP&S) of Columbia University Irving Medical Center (CUIMC) at the rank of Lecturer, Instructor or Assistant Professor (based on relevant experience and qualifications). Clinical responsibilities include providing genetic counseling services to patients and family members in the multiple adult specialty genetics clinics in CPMG and Department of Medicine. In this role, the genetic counselor will conduct intake screening, risk assessment, explain nature and scope of testing procedures; act as a liaison between the clinical department and the molecular diagnostic laboratories; communicate results to patients and families and write summary reports; and develop and present in-service education to physicians and other health care providers to increase genetic testing fluency among providers of the Medical Center. Additionally, the genetic counselor will be involved in the implementation of new opportunities for the provision of genetic counseling across clinical and research specialties in the Department of Medicine. Research responsibilities may include enrollment of patients into different genomic research studies, serving as the primary contact for both potential patients and referring physicians, review of patient medical records, coordination and implementation of study procedures, return of results to referring physicians and/or patients as indicated, and providing post-test counseling, education, and support to patients and families. The genetic counselor may also be responsible for submissions to the IRB and other regulatory bodies as needed, maintenance of study files and databases, and ensuring overall adherence to written protocols and regulatory requirements. In addition, the genetic counselor will be encouraged to participate in scholarly activity, including research collaboration, abstracts, manuscripts, and presentations at national meetings. Job Description The Lead Sleep Technologist works under the general supervision of the medical director or designee to provide comprehensive evaluation and treatment of sleep disorders including in center and out of center sleep testing, diagnostic and therapeutic interventions, comprehensive patient care and direct patient education. This individual can perform the duties defined for a sleep technologist, and is competent in all aspects of home sleep testing. Demonstrates organizational, computer, interpersonal and technical skills. Qualifications * High school graduate or the equivalent. * Associate or higher degree program in polysomnographic technology preferred. * 5 years minimum experience as a Polysomnographic Technician or Technologist. * Authorized Polysomnographic Technologist licensed in New York State in good standing * Certification by a nationally recognized certification board and holds the Registered Sleep Technologist (RST), Registered Polysomnographic Technologist (RPSGT), or Sleep Disorders Specialist (SDS) credential. * Current CPR or BLS certification Collective bargaining unit: SEIU 1199-MSBI Responsibilities 1.Collects, analyzes and integrates patient information to identify and meet the patient-specific needs (physical/mental limitations, current emotional/physiological status regarding the testing procedure, pertinent medical/social history). 2.Determines final testing parameters/procedures in conjunction with the ordering physician or clinical director and laboratory protocols. 3.Reviews the patients history and verifies the medical order. Follows sleep center protocols related to the sleep study. 4.Upon patient arrival, verifies identification, collects documents and obtains consent for the study. 5.Explains the procedure and orients the patient for either in center or out of center sleep testing. 6.Selects appropriate equipment and calibrates for testing to determine proper functioning and adjusts, if necessary. 7.Applies electrodes and sensors according to accepted published standards. 8.Performs routine positive airway pressure (PAP) interface fitting and desensitization. 9.Follows procedural protocols [such as Multiple Sleep Latency Test (MSLT), Maintenance of Wakefulness Test (MWT), parasomnia studies, PAP and oxygen titration, etc.] to ensure collection of appropriate data. 10.Performs data acquisition while monitoring study-tracing quality to ensure signals are artifact-free. Job Description A nurse practitioner (NP) as described in Title VIII, Article 139 section 6910 of the New York Education Law is a RN who has earned a separate certification as an NP through advanced clinical nursing education in a distinct specialty area of practice. Nurse practitioners are independent practitioners who diagnose, treat, and prescribe for a patient's condition that falls within their specialty area of practice. NOTE: Medical orders, progress notes and treatments plans are not required to be countersigned by a physician. Qualifications At least two years of nursing experience in area of specialty practice applied for. Nurse Practitioner experience of at least one year preferred Licensure: New York State License with current registration as a registered nurse.
