Job Description Canyon seeks a full-time Retail Store Merchandiser/Manager to develop and oversee all aspects of Canyon's retail operations, working collaboratively across visitor services, curatorial, and retail functions. Who we are Canyon is a nonprofit arts venue opening in 2026 on the Lower East Side of NYC, dedicated to the exhibition of time-based media art and performance. Position Overview The Retail Store Merchandiser/Manager reports to Canyon's Chief Operating Officer. Canyon's retail store will feature carefully selected and custom-designed merchandise that reflects our artistic mission, with a particular emphasis on exhibition-specific products created in collaboration with artists and curators. This position will manage the retail operations from inventory acquisition and product design through purchasing, inventory management, retail merchandising/display, and sales. Working at the intersection of visitor services, curatorial programming, and merchandising, the Retail Store Merchandiser/Manager will collaborate with the Visitor Services Manager to ensure front-of-house staff are trained to sell merchandise effectively, and will partner with curators to create specialized exhibition retail offerings. The ideal candidate will have a sharp and lively design eye, a proven knack for sourcing attractive inventory at all price levels, will be a strong collaborator, and will bring Canyon's unique retail vision to life. Key Responsibilities: • Oversee all retail operations from merchandise conception and design through sales and inventory, • Develop and implement Canyon's retail strategy to support the artistic program, • Source, purchase, order, stock, and inventory all merchandise, • Curate a product selection that reflects Canyon's mission and artistic program, in collaboration with leadership, including exhibition-specific retail products and artist editions, • Work with the Visitor Services Manager to train front-of-house staff on merchandise and sales techniques, • Manage vendor and artist relationships for custom and exclusive products, • Oversee visual merchandising and store presentation, • Track sales performance, and adjust inventory and purchasing strategy accordingly, • Manage retail budget and control costs, • Develop and maintain online retail presence and oversee e-commerce operations, • Ensure accurate cash handling, deposits, and reporting for retail revenue Required Qualifications: • Minimum 5 years of retail experience, • Proven ability to develop and execute retail strategies that meet revenue targets, • Strong experience with inventory management, purchasing, and vendor relations, • Excellent collaboration and communication skills for working across multiple departments, • Ability to work effectively with diverse stakeholders including artists, curators, and front-line staff, • Strong organizational and project management abilities, • Experience managing budgets and financial reporting Desired skills and qualifications • Familiarity with video art, digital art, and time-based media, • Experience with online sales and e-commerce platforms, • Background in museum, gallery, or arts retail This is a full-time position. The 40-hour work week must partially align with the museum's visitor hours, which means a regular schedule will include some evenings and weekends. Salary and Benefits: Salary is commensurate with experience. The expected range is $75,000-95,000. This is a full-time salaried position.
