Job Description Summary: Accessioner/ Laboratory Aide is responsible for supporting the department with all clerical and ancillary duties in keeping all equipment ready to run for patient testing. This position works under the direction of the supervisor and follows standard Laboratory procedures and policies. Qualifications: Education: · High School Diploma or equivalent, preferred. Experience: · Clinical laboratory experience, preferred. · Skills: Promotes positive co-worker relationships, teamwork and cooperation, both within the department and across departmental lines. Works collaboratively and is respectful of others. · Strong written and verbal communication skills are essential. · Strong time-management and organizational skills are required. Physical Requirements: · Position requires extensive standing, occasional sitting and routine walking. • Ability to push/pull up to 35lbs and lift objects of up to 25lbs is occasionally required., • Some laboratory tests performed are dependent on color determination. Ability to differentiate colors is required to perform these tests., • Category I risk exposure as defined by OSHA. Essential Duties and Responsibilities under Supervision: · Picks up samples from storage area and sorts of samples into appropriate racks. · Accessions samples according to the Accessioning Standard Operating Procedure · Performs laboratory tasks of centrifuging specimens, printing extra labels, recording data (temperature charts) specimen storage and retrieval. · Preparing reagents and or media in the department. · Preparing specimens at workstations for testing. (including building worklists, aliquoting specimens into sample cups, checking specimens for clots and, inoculation, slide preparation) · Resolves pending lists. · Finds missing samples. · Decontaminates work areas. · Maintains files for department records. · Follows all PPE requirements and all safety regulations. · Uses the laboratory computer system. · Disposes of biohazardous material. · Answer’s phone and directs calls appropriately. · Unpacks and stores reagents and supplies. · Completes training and competency checklists as appropriate. · Assists with department quality and process improvement projects. · Performs other duties as assigned. · Store done specimen in the storage areas. Discard blood specimens from two-week period. · Assist with reagents and supplies inventory control. · Replenish laboratory supply. · Perform bench-top cleaning to disinfect working areas. · Organize reagent shelves and report any low volume reagent or consumables. · Assist Technical staff with other tasks when needed. · Adheres to standards of practice as set forth in policy and guidelines to assure safety. · Uses supplies and institutional resources in a financially responsible manner. · Maintains an orderly, clean and safe work environment. · Maintains appropriate and professional personal appearance. · Assists in the training process of new personnel. · Uses flexibility and innovation while problem solving. · Demonstrates initiative in expanding and sharing knowledge. · Communicates with coworkers while adhering always to laboratory policies for the protection of the privacy of patient health information and confidentiality. · Assists with the development and implementation of policies and procedures. · Communicates necessary information to supervisor or team leader in support of unit. · Work extra hours when needed.
