Job Description Overview: Two years of nursing experience is Required. Experience working in a fast-paced Emergency Room, ICU, or Multi-Specialty Surgery Center is preferred. Under the general supervision of the Clinical Director and following the center's policies and procedures, the staff nurse assigned to the pre-operative area is responsible for using independent judgment in providing care for the pre-operative patient. The staff nurse may also be utilized elsewhere (OR, Recovery Room) according to need and specialized skills. Starting Pay: $40.00 Position Scope: The position is responsible for directly providing pertinent information to the patient pre-operatively and gathering information from that patient to ensure the best possible care. At the same time, he/she is a patient at the surgery center. Position Activities: 1. Admits patient to the pre-operative area, 2. Assures operative permit coincides with history and physical and physicians' orders, 3. Takes and records vital signs and reports abnormalities to the physician; evaluates laboratory reports for any abnormalities, 4. Gathers pertinent information from the patient concerning his/her health problems and pending surgery, and provides other personnel with this information to ensure the best possible care, 5. Provides the patient with the necessary information concerning the center and his/her surgical procedure, 6. Monitors patient until he/she leaves the pre-operative area for the operating room under the care of the OR nurse and/or anesthesia department representative, 7. Performs excellent telephone skills and interacts favorably with patients, families, the physician’s office staff, and all areas of the center., 8. Signs out and administers narcotic medication according to policy and narcotics regulations, 9. Treats all information obtained from patients, medical records, or any other means as confidential, reporting only to those involved in direct patient care, 10. Anticipates and plans for the safety needs of patients, visitors, and employees, 11. Identifies teaching needs and is involved with patient and family teachings related to immediate care and discharge planning, 12. Utilizes community resources for health teaching programs for patients and families, 13. Assists in formulating and initiating policies, procedures, and nursing care objectives, 14. Supports the standards of nursing care by utilizing policy and procedures and is aware of the goals and objectives for the department, 15. Participates in Quality Improvement activities and makes suggestions for patient care improvement, 16. Is aware of the duties and activities necessary for the daily maintenance of the surgery center, 17. Participates in the orientation of personnel to the center, 18. Uses accurate and proper terminology in recording assessments on patient charts, 19. Assures the operative permit is signed and dated by the patient and the attending RN, 20. Assures all requirements, such as IV or EKGs, are met before the patient is transferred to the OR, 21. Performs telephone interview of epidural patients, obtaining patients' medical history and current medications, 22. Files incident reports as necessary, 23. Participates actively in staff and department meetings, 24. Performs any other duties as assigned by the Director of Nursing, 25. Performs any other duties as needed to ensure the safety and comfort of all customers as well as the efficient operation of the facility Education and Experience: The candidate must have a Minimum of two years of nursing experience and be a graduate of an accredited nursing school with a current CA license as a Registered Nurse (RN). Two years of nursing experience is Required. The candidate must demonstrate knowledge of general nursing, ACLS, and CPR. Physical Requirements: Must be in good general and emotional health; some lifting and pushing involved; long periods of standing and walking involved; possess good physical stamina, adequate hearing and vision, and the absence of back problems. Personal: Must be a quick learner, able to work in a fast-paced environment, organize work, maintain professional integrity and ethical judgment, make intelligent decisions, and initiate appropriate action; must be stable, mature, dependable, and able to get along with others. The position is under the supervision of the Clinical Director. It involves good communication skills with all areas of the center and a thorough knowledge of procedures, equipment, and medications used in the OR. Position Activities: A. Evaluate the patient’s care and appropriateness of care given: E. Documents and completes patient-related documents per policy. F. Participates in teaching staff, students, and others G. Organizes and maintains work area, equipment, and supplies: H. Demonstrates knowledge and skills appropriate to the age of patients served: Appropriate age-specific safety measures are demonstrated when providing patient care. Is current in CPR and ACLS Psychosocial growth and development concepts are integrated into patient care. Physical growth and development assessment activities are demonstrated. Age-specific practices are applied when administering medications to pediatric, adult, and/or geriatric patients. I. Performs other duties as needed to ensure the safety and comfort of all customers as well as the efficient operation of the facility. Education and Experience: Must be an accredited nursing school graduate with a current CA license as a Registered Nurse (RN)—experience required. 2 years preferred. Physical Requirements: Position requires extensive mobility, walking, standing, stooping, and bending; pushing, pulling, and lifting of equipment and patients of various weights; exposure to contaminated/biohazard wastes and bodily fluids as well as harsh cleaning agents and toxic chemicals; requires use of medical and mechanical equipment, requiring full manual dexterity and eye/hand coordination; requires mental alertness and accuracy for quality patient care and decision making, as well as ability to work under stressful, hurried conditions; must have physical stamina to work extra hours if needed.
