Job Description UNM Medical Group, Inc. is hiring for a Nurse Navigator to join our UNM Comprehensive Cancer Center. This opportunity is a full-time day shift opening located in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Minimum $85,781 - Midpoint $109,305* *Salary is determined based on years of total relevant experience. *Salary is based on 1.0 FTE (full time equivalent) or 40 hours per week. Less than 40 hours/week will be prorated and adjusted to the appropriate FTE. Summary Provides professional nursing care and coordinates the delivery of oncology or radiation oncology treatments, often in intensive care conditions, to assigned patients in a medical oncology or radiation oncology facility, ensuring adherence to policy, and nursing procedures, standards, and practices. Minimum Job Requirements of a Nurse Navigator: Associates degree in nursing with at least 1 year of experience that can be demonstrated to be applicable to the duties listed in the job description. State of New Mexico Licensed Registered Nurse or licensure pending as documented by temporary licensure OR current RN licensure from a state participating in the "multistate privilege to practice" compact with New Mexico. Completed degree from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirements may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis. Verification of education and licensure will be required if selected for hire. Duties and Responsibilities of a Nurse Navigator: • Provides direct nursing care for specified patients, including appropriate supportive care and administration of chemotherapy, blood components, fluid and electrolyte replacements, and other oncology treatments as prescribed., • Provides and oversees direct patient care, including wound care, accessing port/PICC lines, appropriate supportive care, administration of fluid and electrolyte replacements, and other oncology treatments are prescribed., • Implements the radiation oncologist's orders for clinic follow ups and weekly status checks., • Provides direct care to patients and makes necessary nursing judgements. Responsible for systematically assessing the health care needs of individuals or groups and for the formulation of a care plan, its implementation and evaluation., • Plans strategies for solving patient care problems with other members of the patient care team., • Observes, evaluates, and documents patient progress., • Provides health-related education and counseling for patients., • Assesses/educated patients for treatment-related side effects, and notifies the medical or radiation oncologist if patient needs a break from treatment due to side effects., • Prepares equipment and assists physicians with treatments, examinations, or surgical procedures., • Performs nursing assessments and triage of patient care needs for new and ongoing patients, including patients on a clinical research study., • Oversees the planning, scheduling and implementation of day-to-day clinical activities and procedures for navigating patients., • Works with physicians and clinical research office to facilitate, coordinate and ensure patient access to Clinical trials., • Central point of contact for all navigated patients, including interactions with medical, nursing, ancillary services, and when appropriate the clinical research coordinator. Assists with the identification of potential patients for Clinical Trial protocols and coordinates with the research coordinator to consent the patient., • Provides education to patients, families, and significant others, acts as an information resource to students, health care professionals, patients, and the public., • Provides family support as required, including applicable referrals and bereavement counseling., • Track order completion and follow up. Monitor patient compliance with patient treatment plan., • Assist patients with referrals to outside resources and care coordination as needed., • Attend and refer patients to tumor board and follow up on tumor board recommendations., • Follows established departmental policies, procedures, and objectives, continuous quality improvement objectives, and safety, environmental, and/or infection control standards., • May train and guide other nursing and support staff engaged in clinical actives; may participate in research and related activities., • Designs or participates in the creation of health education materials., • Performs the coordination between OR, Anesthesiologist, Radiation Oncologists, and Radiation Therapist schedules for all pediatric and specialty procedures. About UNM Comprehensive Cancer Center: Under the general supervision of the Department Director and indirect supervision of the Medical Director, provide direct care to patients by collecting patient data and/or medical histories, provides and oversees direct patient care, and coordinates patient care between department and other patient care areas. Establish and provide safe direct patient care, utilizing established nursing processes in an ambulatory setting; ensures adherence to all standards, infection prevention and organizational policies, procedures and guidelines. Oversees the planning, scheduling and implementation of day-to-day clinical activities and procedures for navigating patients receiving radiation therapy. This is a full-time on-site position in Radiation Oncology at the UNM Comprehensive Cancer Center. This position will be located at the University of New Mexico Comprehensive Cancer Center (UNMCCC). The Comprehensive Cancer Center (UNMCCC) is a statewide provider of cancer care and is influential in the cancer field throughout New Mexico and the nation. The Official Cancer Center of New Mexico, the UNM Comprehensive Cancer Center, is the only academic healthcare facility dedicated to both cancer research and patient care. We are also the only cancer center in New Mexico designated by the National Cancer Institute (NCI), and one of just 66 premier Net-designated centers nationwide. We employee over 200 research scientists and staff over 100 clinicians, and at any one time participate in around 300 clinical trials. Our clinic saw over 15,800 cancer patients from every county in New Mexico and more than 137,000 patient visits.
