The Perianesthesia Staff Nurse will provide administrative and patient care support at Empire Surgery Center under the supervision of the Surgery Center Administrator, and Assistant Manager in the absence of the Administrator. The Perianesthesia Nurse will help ensure the efficient operation of the Surgery Center through organization and communication. List of Duties and Responsibilities • Preoperative screening of patients scheduled for a procedure or surgery and verifies required preoperative reports such as lab work, medical history, surgery orders, and applicable consents. Alerts the surgeon/anesthesiology provider for clearance of patients when applicable (i.e. abnormal labs, medical problems, etc.)., • Prepares the pre-operative and recovery area to receive patients, and maintains level of preparation appropriate for each days surgical cases., • Completes the preoperative safety checklist in a timely and efficient manner, in compliance with facility policy on all surgical patients., • Assists in maintaining accurate narcotic count at the beginning and end of each surgical day; assists in regular evaluation of medication expiration dates and inventory, alerts medication management nurse of findings, and disposes of any expired medications; records open/expiration dates and initials on newly opened vials; receives shipments of controlled substances and counts/documents per policy; stocks medications as needed; and safely prepares and administers medication as ordered by the physician, following facility policies and procedures., • Obtains vital information via comprehensive patient physical assessment and explicit verbal questioning of patients condition. Notifies surgeon/anesthesiology provider of significant changes in patient condition., • Maintains patient airway in the recovery period. Inserts, maintains, and discontinues intravenous lines following physician protocol/orders., • Ensures preoperative and recovery waste receptacles are regularly emptied to maintain a clean and organized environment, while ensuring all safety, infection control, and hazardous materials policies are upheld., • Assists with operating room cleaning, disinfection, and setup between each surgical patient., • Assists with positioning patient on gurney for comfort and safety, following facility safety protocols., • Notes, clarifies, and follows physician orders., • Properly handles and records fluid and/or tissue specimens., • Ensures patient safety by preventing injury or falls while in the care of surgery center staff. Assists patients with mobility impairments through surgery center, to/from vehicle, to/from chairs and/or gurneys. Assists in transporting chairs/gurneys from operating room to recovery area.., • Reviews patient medical record and physician orders prior to each patient care interaction, and ensures appropriate consent completeness in patient chart., • Ensures sufficient stock of surgical supplies for each surgical day, taking into consideration volume and variety of surgical cases., • Completes electronic medical record documentation in a thorough, accurate, and timely manner, specific to preoperative and recovery care and in accordance with applicable regulatory, AAAASF, and CMS requirements., • Demonstrates strong work ethic as a team player who can multitask and provide high-quality patient care in a busy outpatient setting., • Communicates effectively with outside clinics to obtain medical testing/record documentation as part of the surgery prep process., • Works closely with other departments such as surgery scheduling, clinic staff, and managers to prepare for surgery days., • Makes preoperative phone calls to patients and/or their support persons to obtain pertinent medical history and/or test results, a well as providing pre and post-operative instructions and any applicable policies and procedures that affect their care on the date of service., • Provides patient and family teaching, ensures a safe and calm environment, and answers all questions to alleviate fears of patient/support persons. Provides for patient physical and emotional comfort, and prioritizes patient safety in the surgery center., • Communicates effectively with team members and demonstrates excellent patient service., • Maintains the strictest confidentiality at all times in accordance with HIPAA regulations., • Assists with inventory management through stocking supplies and communicating needs with supervisor or materials manager., • Demonstrates excellent teamwork and willingness to support and hep other surgery center staff., • Attends department and general staff meeting as instructed., • Understands, verbalizes and participates in the quality improvement process. Participates in QAPI, infection control, peer review, trainings, and mock-emergency drills as instructed., • Arrives for shifts on-time and ready for assigned duties., • Wears appropriate attire in restricted area and demonstrates proper donning and doffing of PPE per policy., • Collaborates with the team of patient, family, and healthcare providers in providing patient care in a safe, healing, humane, and caring environment., • Listens respectfully, gives feedback directly, honestly and talks with others to clarify differences., • Utilizes translation services and/or additional appropriate services to communicate with employees and patients with speech and hearing disorders, or for whom English is not their primary language., • Effectively communicates and interacts with patients, their family, and other external and internal clients (including fellow employees) from diverse backgrounds., • Notifies supervisor of unusual occurrences or incidents, and completes appropriate documentation in a thorough, accurate, and timely manner., • Demonstrates a willingness to look at new ideas and work in a changing environment., • Supports initiatives designed to improve individual and organizational performance., • Identifies and reports suspected child, spousal/partner, and elder abuse per protocol., • Adheres to all company policies and procedures., • Performs other duties as assigned. Reports to Surgery Center Nurse Administrator Classification Non-exempt No weekends/holidays/on-call required Salary $42-48 starting wage, depending on experience Schedule Wednesday and Thursday, approximately 16 hours per week. Opportunity for additional hours as needed for time off coverage. Requirements: Qualifications • High School Diploma or GED, • Current California RN/LVN License, • Current BLS/ACLS/PALS Certification (within 6 months of hire), • Previous surgery center experience (preferred) Skills • Excellent phone and customer service, • Strong physical assessment skills (pre/post operative), • Skilled patient care with competent knowledge of the nursing process, • IV placement and pre/post operative medication administration, • Patient and family education, • Excellent critical thinking and independent decision-making skills, within facility policy and procedures, • Ability to multi-task and adapt in a fast-paced environment, • Computer proficiency, • Strong written and verbal communication, • Excellent time management, • Knowledge of infection control and sterile field, • Ability to receive and execute explicit MD orders with accuracy, • Cleanliness and organization, • Proficiency with Electronic Health Records systems, • POCT Testing, • Attention to detail, • Excellence in working within a healthcare team environment, • Bilingual in English and Spanish a plus (but not required) Empire Management Group, Inc. is an equal opportunity employer committed to a diverse and inclusive workforce.
