Job Description THE ORGANIZATION The Center for Justice Innovation is a nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing community safety and racial justice. Since 1996, we’ve worked alongside communities, courts, and those most directly affected by the justice system to build stronger, healthier, and more equitable neighborhoods. With a team of over 900 staff and an annual budget of $130 million, the Center carries out its mission through three core strategies: • Operating Programs that pilot new ideas and address local challenges;, • Conducting original research to evaluate what works—and what doesn’t; and THE OPPORTUNITY The Center for Justice Innovation is seeking a Counselor, Jail Diversion to join a team of clinicians who assess the clinical and services needs of defendants currently being held in pretrial detention. This will include coordinating closely with the Manhattan Felony Alternative to Incarceration (ATI) Court to identify and assess potential participants. The ATI Court, which is led by Administrative Judge Ellen Biben, seeks to forge a new response to individuals charged with felonies by linking them to community-based social services. The Court is the first of its kind, providing an innovative model for other jurisdictions seeking to develop and implement meaningful post-conviction sentencing options for individuals facing felony charges. Reporting to the Senior Social Worker, Jail Diversion, the Counselor will be responsible for conducting independent clinical assessments and drafting treatment recommendations for defendants being held in pretrial detention. The Counselor will conduct these assessments and complete these treatment plans according to a strict timeline, ensuring that the process is completed as quickly as possible. The goal is to provide information that will enable defense attorneys, prosecutors, and judges to resolve cases as quickly as possible, significantly reducing the time people spend in pretrial detention. An essential and dynamic feature of the Counselor’s role will be close collaboration with key external stakeholders. They will work regularly with New York City defense organizations and other defense attorneys, prosecutors from the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office and the Office of the Special Narcotics Prosecutor, staff at the Department of Correction and Correctional Health Services, the judge and court staff from New York County Supreme Court who oversee the Felony ATI Court, and an array of community-based alternative to incarceration and community-based providers. Court-based clinical work is an exciting, unique and demanding area of practice, and the Counselor role involves navigating and constructively engaging with differing and, at times, competing stakeholder perspectives. Responsibilities include but are not limited to: • Conduct individualized clinical assessments for people incarcerated in pretrial detention;, • Develop treatment recommendations that address issues such as substance use, mental health, trauma, domestic violence, housing, education, and employment, among other needs;, • Ensure that all assessments are completed and all recommendations are submitted according to a strict timeline;, • Share and review treatment recommendations with defense counsel,, • Present treatment recommendations to legal stakeholders (judge, defense counsel, prosecutor, and court staff), when necessary;, • When defendants are referred to the Felony ATI Court, make appropriate community-based referrals for a variety of social service needs, such as substance use, mental health, trauma, domestic violence, housing, and vocational needs;, • Participate in regular interdisciplinary case conferences with court stakeholders while cases are pre-plea;, • Attend court, as needed, to help clients navigate court and collaborate with court staff and stakeholders;, • Conduct warm handoffs to case management staff prior to participants entering their plea;, • Collaborate and maintain strong relationships with key stakeholders, including prosecutors, defense attorneys, the Felony ATI Court’s resource coordinators, community-based service providers, Department of Correction, Correctional Health Services staff;, • Enter and maintain appropriate up-to-date participant data in case management system, including all assessment and case information;, • Provide crisis intervention and de-escalation, as needed;, • Assist the Senior Social Worker with the refinement of existing practice and the development and implementation of new processes; including improving assessment and treatment planning processes, and implementing clinical best practices;, • Coordinate with the Center’s Jail Population Review team to ensure an efficient referral and assessment process for potential participants held in pretrial detention, as necessary;, • Participate in clinical group supervision, staff meetings, and trainings, as scheduled;, • Attend evening community-based meetings and events, as needed;, • Assist with other programmatic and administrative tasks to support Manhattan Justice’s activities, as needed; and, • MHC and at least 4-5 years in criminal justice and/or a related field, such as healthcare, substance use and mental health treatment, homelessness and housing services, education, job training/workforce development, child welfare and family services, youth services, elder care services, domestic violence programming, sex offense treatment, and services for people with development disabilities, is required. Experience in a court or criminal justice settings, including working with incarcerated people preferred. About this role: We are looking for a full-time, Family Mental Health Counselor within Sakhi’s program: The Ramesh and Kalpana Bhatia Family Foundation South Asian Safe Families Initiative. The short-term goal of the program is to strengthen the bonds between primary caregivers, children and families with the long-term aim of reducing future generational cycles of violence through culturally informed research and service provision. The Family Mental Health Counselor will report to the Associate Director of Counseling and will work with South Asian & Indo-Caribbean survivors of gender-based violence. The ideal candidate will: * Support in the development of family mental health services at Sakhi and further development of the South Asian Safe Families Initiative; * Identify and share new effective approaches to disrupting intergenerational cycles of violence in South Asian & Indo-Caribbean immigrant families nationally and globally; * Collaborate with a partner researcher to develop psychoeducational programs for Sakhi caregivers, modify evidence-based models for a South Asian cultural context, modify materials (e.g. manuals), and implement survivor-centered evaluation practices of our short and long-term goals; * Provide culturally-appropriate, trauma-informed, holistic counseling services to families who have experienced gender-based violence and/or intergenerational trauma; * Encourage limited English proficient survivors to discuss emotions and experiences in a language most comfortable for them; * Provide psychoeducation to survivors on the impact of trauma and common reactions to abuse and violence; * Help survivors understand power and control dynamics and cycles of violence within their relationships, and create safety plans as needed for emotional and physical health; * Develop therapeutic processes with survivors to help define goals, gain insight, and plans for life after therapy; * Help survivors learn tools to manage the intensity of their trauma reactions; * Examine issues including substance abuse, aging, bullying, anger management, careers, depression, relationships, LGBTQ issues, self-image, stress and suicide; * Modify treatment activities and approaches as needed in order to comply with changes in clients' status; * Advocate for survivors to coordinate required services or to resolve emergency problems in crisis situations; * Gather information about community mental health needs and resources that could be used in conjunction with therapy; * Refer survivors to community resources or specialists as necessary; * Collaborate with other Sakhi staff for referrals and to streamline survivor services and programs; * Evaluate the effectiveness of family counseling programs and survivors' progress in resolving identified problems and moving towards defined objectives; * Plan, organize and lead structured workshops, series and/or support groups of counseling for survivors; * Learn about new developments in their field by reading professional literature, attending courses and seminars, and establishing and maintaining contact with other social service agencies; * Maintain confidentiality of survivor experiences and records at all times. Grant Management and Development * Maintain records of all survivor related work/activities through efficient data collection and notetaking; * Produce accurate reports for grant reporting; * Ensure routine and comprehensive program evaluation; * Work closely with the Development, Grants, and Operations teams to create work plans, attend site visits, and offer pertinent information as needed. Outreach, Training, and Advocacy * Break the stigma around mental health while raising awareness of domestic and sexual violence in the local South Asian & Indo-Caribbean community; * Advocate for equal access for survivors of gender-based violence to various public services agencies including health, governmental, and judicial; * Develop ongoing referral relationships within the health, legal, social service systems, and partner organizations; * Represent Sakhi on relevant task forces, coalitions, and committees to voice trends of gender violence and mental health in South Asian & Indo-Caribbean communities. Required Qualifications * Master’s degree in psychology, social work, counseling, or related field; * Licensed in or Limited Permit holder in New York State, in mental health counseling, social work, or related field; * Preferred 3-5 years of experience in direct social/clinical service with families and a knowledge of trauma, sexual violence, domestic violence, and gender issues; * Fluency in one or more South Asian language, especially Bengali, Hindi, and Urdu; * Excellent interpersonal and communication skills; * Ability to engage with diverse communities and audiences; * Strong administrative, writing, and organization skills; * Experience working with multiple staff, volunteers, and program responsibilities; * Ability to work flexible hours including some evenings and weekends; * Ability to work independently but also as a member of a team. Make the Road New York (MRNY) seeks a bilingual (Spanish & English) full-time Supervising Attorney with expertise in housing law. The Supervising Attorney will oversee our Housing and Benefits practice to provide cutting-edge eviction defense and housing quality enforcement in aggressively gentrifying neighborhoods in Brooklyn and Queens. The Housing and Benefits legal team collaborates closely with our organizing team to focus on anti-harassment and prevention of displacement around our neighborhood offices in Bushwick. The Supervising Attorney will provide policy and campaign support on the areas of housing and public benefits. The Supervising Attorney will also have a small docket of housing cases representing both individuals and groups of tenants in enforcing their rights and fighting tenant harassment.
