The Police Sergeant performs supervisory and administrative law enforcement duties overseeing patrol operations, investigations, crime prevention, traffic and school safety, and community relations. This role ensures compliance with Department and Town and county policies, provides guidance and direct supervision to officers, and responds to emergencies while maintaining public safety. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include but are not limited to the following: • Serves and an ambassador for the Town of Timnath, representing the department with professionalism and integrity in all interactions., • Supervises and manages daily operations, including direct oversight of personnel, shift coordination, and resource allocation to maintain public safety and enforce laws., • Assumes incident command during major or large-scale incidents to ensure effective response, scene control, and coordination with other agencies and partners., • Serves as a direct point of contact between officers and command staff, facilitating efficient communication and the implementation of department initiatives., • Manages personnel scheduling, approves leave, assigns shifts, and adjusts staffing as needed to ensure operational readiness., • Implement department directives by communicating and enforcing policies, procedures, and strategic goals at the operational level., • Monitors patrol activities, investigative efforts, and other department functions to ensure adherence to protocols and operational effectiveness., • Carries out duties in compliance with federal, state, county and municipal laws and ordinances., • Initiates, reviews, and oversees criminal investigations, ensuring proper scene management, evidence handling, suspect apprehension, and collaboration with prosecutorial agencies., • Approves and directs special enforcement initiatives in response to emerging crime trends, traffic issues, or community concerns., • Reviews and approves reports, records, and case filings to ensure accuracy, completeness, and compliance with legal and departmental standards., • Completes thorough reviews of BlueTeam reports to ensure accountability and documentation accuracy., • Respond to calls for service and prepare reports when necessary to support field operations., • Conducts regular performance evaluations and meets with subordinates to provide feedback, track progress, and offer guidance for improvement., • Develops and implements Performance Improvement Plans (PIPs) when performance issues are identified., • Reviews and approves training requests to ensure alignment with professional development goals and department needs., • Manages and assigns public and internal complaints, ensuring each is appropriately vetted, investigated, and resolved in accordance with departmental standards., • Actively participates in community policing by fostering relationships with residence, businesses, and local organizations to build trust and promote collaborative public safety., • Promotes officer wellness and resilience by supporting physical and mental health initiatives, recognizing the unique demands of law enforcement, and encouraging a healthy, supportive work environment., • Perform other duties as assigned to support the mission and operation of the department. QUALIFICATIONS: • Extensive knowledge of modern policing principles, patrol operations, and law enforcement best practices., • Advanced understanding of federal, state, and local laws, including Supreme Court decisions, legal procedures, and municipal codes applicable to policing., • Strong knowledge of police procedures, including proper arrest protocols and evidence handling., • Strong critical thinking and problem-solving skills, with the ability to anticipate and resolve complex issues independently., • Proven ability to manage multiple priorities, organize tasks, and effectively manage time and resources in a dynamic environment., • Skilled in operating department-issued vehicles safely and efficiently., • High level of discretion and ability to handle confidential or sensitive information appropriately., • Ability to exercise initiative and sound judgment under pressure and with limited supervision., • Clear and effective verbal and written communication skills, adaptable to various audiences and communication channels., • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to establish and maintain positive working relationships with colleagues, community members, and individuals from diverse cultural backgrounds., • Collaborative mindset with the ability to work effectively in team environments and foster a positive workplace culture. EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: Education • Associates degree or higher preferred Experience • Current Timnath Police Department employees with three (3) years of law enforcement experience as a Timnath Police Officer., • External candidates must have four (4) years’ experience as a fully commissioned police officer; supervisory experience preferred. NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: • Must possess a valid Colorado driver’s license by date of hire and safe driving record for continued employment., • Currently possess a Basic Certificate issued by the Colorado State Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training (P.O.S.T.), or equivalent. External candidates must obtain Colorado P.O.S.T. within 6 months of hire., • Please note: Out of state candidates must obtain a Provisional Certification | Colorado POST before the first day of employment and must successfully challenge Colorado POST within 6 months of obtaining a Colorado Provisional POST Certification letter. TPD will support candidates challenging Colorado POST. Must have NO: • Felony convictions, • No felony committed in the last 3 years, whether arrested and charged or not., • Any conviction, no contest, or deferred judgment or deferred sentence of a felony crime., • Any misdemeanor crime conviction with the past 3 years., • Certain misdemeanor crimes, as defined by Colorado P.O.S.T., which would affect a peace officer certification in Colorado. Disqualifying Incidents | Colorado POST, • Domestic Violence convictions, • Any illicit drug use within the past 3 years (includes LSD, heroin, cocaine, PCP, mushrooms/psilocybin, amphetamines, inhalants, steroids, etc.), • Use of any illegal drug, on or off duty, while employed as a law enforcement officer., • Refusal to agree to submit to a drug screening as an applicant. WORKING CONDITIONS AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: The physical and environmental demands described below are representative of those required to successfully perform the essential functions of the Police Sergeant position. • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit, stand, walk, balance, reach, grasp, speak, hear, and see with sufficient clarity to perform essential duties., • Occasionally required to run, push, pull, twist, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, climb, and physically restrain combative individuals., • Must frequently lift and/or move objects weighing up to 50 pounds and occasionally up to 100 pounds., • Must maintain physical and mental stamina to respond effectively during extended shifts, emergencies, or physically demanding situations., • Required to wear a duty belt and gear weighing approximately 15-20 pounds for 10–12-hour shifts., • Specific vision requirements include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to focus., • Must be able to read, write, and communicate clearly in English., • Duties are performed in various environments, including office settings, patrol vehicles, and outdoor locations, often in inclement or extreme temperatures., • Exposure to loud noises, hazardous materials, fumes, airborne particles, vibrations, and potentially dangerous or unpredictable situations is common., • This role involves a high degree of risk due to interactions with potentially violent individuals, emotionally distressed persons, and hazardous conditions, including traffic-related dangers., • This position involves frequent exposure to high-stress and potentially life-threatening situations requiring calm and decisive action., • Shift work is required, including nights, weekends, holidays, and overtime as operational needs demand.
