The Role The Research Culture and Evaluation Manager will support the generation, delivery and evaluation of research culture activities across the Flourish at Durham portfolio, enabling colleagues to thrive and flourish. The post-holder will work within the research culture team and in collaboration with other key units such as the Researcher Development team in the Durham Centre for Academic Development (DCAD) and the EDI Team to: Support the development, communication and implementation of the University's new Charter for Researchers alongside the Concordat to Support the Career Development of Researchers; Enable the implementation, data analysis and evaluation of research culture initiatives and actions in academic departments and university research institutes; Work across academic departments and professional services directorates to support the joined-up approach to enabling research ambition, with a particular focus on early and mid-career research culture development; Embed evaluation into research culture activities across Flourish at Durham; Contribute to both internal and external networks that enable research culture progress and undertake professional development and good practice exchange in research and innovation culture. The Role and the Department The Department of Biosciences is composed of 68 academic staff and research fellows; around 50 research and technical support staff; over 90 Research Postgraduate students and over 500 Single Honours undergraduate students. We offer a 3-year BSc degree programme in Biological Sciences and a 4-year MBiol, while also contributing to Natural Sciences. We also run a PGT in Plant Biotechnology with further PGT programmes scheduled for future delivery. Our research and teaching is supported by outstanding research infrastructure in advanced bioimaging (including super-resolution, confocal and electron microscopy), genomics, proteomics, metabolomics, high-performance computing and field research. The research builds upon our expertise in creating ultracold RbCs molecules in the rovibrational ground state and trapping them in rotationally magic traps. The post holders will work directly with Prof. Simon Cornish and other members of his research group within the Durham Quantum Light and Matter research section. The goal of the research is to synthesise and study artificial quantum materials using ultracold molecules arranged in regular arrays to probe novel quantum phenomena in strongly interacting quantum systems. The use of molecules is motivated by their rich internal structure, combined with the existence of controllable long-range dipole-dipole interactions, long trap lifetimes and strong coupling to electric and microwave fields. The post holders will be expected to display the initiative and creativity, together with the appropriate skills and knowledge, required to work with Prof. Cornish to deliver the research goals. These include (1) the encoding synthetic dimensions in molecules confined in rotationally magic traps and (2) the creation of many-body quantum states of molecules in optical lattices for quantum simulation (3) the production of strongly dipolar Bose-Einstein condensates of molecules. The post holders are therefore expected to have experience and familiarity with the techniques used in the study of ultracold gases, including the operation of magneto-optical traps, the production of quantum degenerate gases, optical trapping and optical lattices.
