Title: Consultant Interventional Radiologist Grade: Consultant Division: Clinical Support Services Responsible to: Divisional Medical Director Professionally Accountable to: Medical Director Contract & Working Pattern: Permanent | 10 Programmed Activities (PAs) (Part-time / flexible working applications welcome) The Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital NHS Trust (SaTH) is seeking an enthusiastic, highly skilled Consultant Interventional Radiologist to join a busy, progressive, and expanding radiology department. Following a major £7 million modernisation of our radiology infrastructure, this role provides an outstanding opportunity to deliver advanced vascular and non-vascular interventional services while supporting general diagnostic cross-sectional imaging. The post involves sessional commitments across both main hospital sites (Princess Royal Hospital, Telford, and Royal Shrewsbury Hospital, Shrewsbury). Core participation in the cross-county general radiology on-call rota is required (first on-call overnight service is outsourced). Perform a wide spectrum of vascular and non-vascular interventional procedures for both inpatient and outpatient populations. Contribute actively to general diagnostic radiology reporting, multidisciplinary team (MDT) meetings, and clinic-radiological review sessions. Follow patients throughout their clinical pathways, evaluating, managing, and adjusting care based on clinical progress and outcomes. Participate in the cross-county general radiology on-call rota (approximately 1:24). (There is currently no separate out-of-hours interventional rota; prospective cover for annual and study leave applies) Deliver national and local clinical and quality performance targets collaboratively with clinical teams and commissioners. Actively participate in the supervision, training, and workplace assessment of specialty radiology registrars rotating from the West Midlands training scheme (including University Hospital of North Staffordshire) and junior clinical staff. Support multi-professional workforce education, including advanced practitioner radiographers and sonographers. Engage in clinical audit, quality improvement projects (QIPs), and local/national clinical trials supported by the Trust’s dedicated Audit Department. Collaborate with the Clinical Director, Centre Manager, and multi-professional team in the efficient, safe running of the Imaging Service Delivery Unit. Maintain professional registration, participate in annual appraisals via the Premier IT Revalidation e-Portfolio (PReP), and fulfill all requirements for GMC revalidation and continuing professional development (CPD). Adhere to Trust clinical governance, statutory health & safety, infection prevention and control, and information governance protocols. A formal, agreed job plan will be finalised with the Clinical Director within three months of appointment and reviewed annually. Direct Clinical Care (DCC): 7.75 PAs (including core sessions, intervention, vetting, and 1 PA resident evening/weekend commitment) Supporting Professional Activities (SPA): 2.0 PAs (CPD, audit, revalidation, teaching, service improvement) On-Call Availability: 0.25 PA (non-resident cross-county on-call) Day Morning (AM) Afternoon (PM) Monday CT Imaging Supporting Professional Activity (SPA) Tuesday Ultrasound Intervention Cross-Sectional Reporting Wednesday Admin / Protocolling & Vetting MR Imaging Thursday Interventional Radiology Suite Interventional Radiology Suite Friday Supporting Professional Activity (SPA) Duty Doctor / Emergency Inpatient Support The Directorate of Radiology operates across 33 dedicated imaging rooms, alongside a community diagnostic center (CDC): Angiography / Cath Labs: 2x Philips Azurion suites CT Scanners: 5 state-of-the-art systems (Siemens, Canon 360-slice, and Canon Multislice) MRI Scanners: 4x 1.5T Siemens Aera systems plus 2 mobile units and a dedicated CDC Siemens Sola MRI Ultrasound & Fluoroscopy: 8 advanced ultrasound systems (Canon 1700, Siemens Acuson, Philips Epic Elite), 2x Philips general screening fluoroscopy suites, and 8 Philips Digital Diagnostic rooms IT / PACS: Enterprise Agfa EI PACS with extensive regional and tertiary networking Category Essential Criteria Desirable Criteria Qualifications • Primary Medical Qualification (MBBS, MBChB, or equivalent), • Fellow of the Royal College of Radiologists (FRCR) or equivalent, • Higher academic degree (MD, PhD, MSc) Eligibility & Registration • Full GMC Registration with a licence to practise, • Entry on the GMC Specialist Register in Clinical Radiology (or within 6 months of CCT/CESR at the date of interview), • Post-CCT interventional fellowship credentials Clinical Experience • Comprehensive training equivalent to UK CCT in Clinical Radiology, • Demonstrable competency and advanced clinical experience in vascular and non-vascular Interventional Radiology, • Competence in emergency general diagnostic radiology and cross-sectional imaging, • Specific subspecialty interest complementing existing consultants (e.g., embolisation, oncology intervention) Governance, Audit & Research • Evidence of commitment to regular clinical audit, quality improvement, and clinical risk management, • Understanding of basic research methodology and evidence-based clinical guidelines, • Publications in peer-reviewed journals, • Presentation of original work at national/international radiology congresses Teamworking & Communication • Excellent verbal and written communication skills with colleagues, patients, and carers, • Proven ability to collaborate effectively within a multi-disciplinary clinical team, • Patient-centred approach aligning with Poppy’s Promise and the C.A.R.E. principles (Compassion, Acknowledge, Respect, Empower), • Formal leadership or clinical management training At The Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital NHS Trust, we are committed to "Providing excellent care for the communities we serve."
