As a Consultant Gastroenterologist, you'll help us develop a patient-centred IBD service in a friendly and supportive department, assisted by regular input from the University Hospital Southampton (UHS) IBD team.Why this role?Advance the IBD service:This is an opportunity to develop and improve our inpatient and outpatient IBD pathways, strengthen MDT working, and help develop our surveillance endoscopy serviceSupportive culture:Work within a small, friendly, multicultural team that values collaboration, practical problem-solving and digital innovation.Tertiary centre input:We are supported by avisiting IBD consultant on site one day a week, with access to shared pathways and advice for complex cases.Progression and development:Depending on individual interests, there are opportunities to take on a service leadership role, contribute to the expansion of the departmental IBD research portfolio, or play a key role in developing our new small bowel capsule endoscopy service.The GI Unit is an established, ambitious department bringing together gastroenterology, upper GI and colorectal surgery, emergency general surgery, and endoscopy. Our aim is simple: provide joined-up, high-quality care for people with gastrointestinal conditions across emergency and elective settings.Main duties of the jobOur IBD service:Team consists of1 Consultant with specialist interest in IBD,1 Trainee Advanced Clinical Practitioner,5 IBD Clinical Nurse Specialistsand2 IBD Pathway Navigators.Fortnightly IBD MDTwith gastroenterology consultants (including UHS support), IBD CNS, Pathway Navigator, GI radiology, colorectal surgery and histopathologist.Specialist pharmacistsupport enabling rapid initiation of evidence-based therapies following MDT decisions.Digital innovation:NHS England-funded pilot site forMyMedicalRecord. This is a secure digital health platform which provides patients with information about their IBD care, and enables proactive monitoring of disease activity and treatment response.The role includes a requirement to participate in the acute gastroenterology rota, providing ward cover for gastroenterology inpatients two weeks in twelve, as well as provision of in hours cover for upper GI bleeds (0800-1800).This is a fixed term 12 month position offered at 10 PAs but applicants looking for less than full time will also be considered. We welcome applications from established consultants and from senior trainees - you must be within six months of CCT at the date of interview. Applicants must have completed specialist training in gastroenterology and be on, or eligible for, the GMC Specialist Register.
