About the Job We are seeking an experienced and highly motivated Service Manager to lead our busy commercial vehicle workshop. You will be responsible for the profitable management of the aftersales department, ensuring the highest standards of safety, quality, and efficiency. About the Role Key Responsibilities Operational Management • Managing workflow for HGVs, LGVs, trailers, and PSVs., • Plan and manage the service, maintenance, and repair (SMR) schedules to meet customer deadlines and internal targets., • Ensure all work is completed in accordance with manufacturer specifications and DVSA (Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency) guidelines., • Liaise closely with the Parts Department to ensure the timely availability of components. People Leadership • Lead, mentor, and motivate a team of HGV Technicians, Service Advisors, and Apprentices., • Conduct regular performance reviews, identify training needs, and ensure all team members hold the necessary IRTEC or manufacturer accreditations., • Manage technician productivity and utilisation, ensuring efficient labour sales. Customer & Client Relations • Act as the primary point of contact for fleet operators and owner-drivers, handling complex technical inquiries and complaints professionally., • Build and maintain strong relationships with key national accounts and local fleets., • Proactively communicate job status and completion times to customers. Financial & Administration • Achieve departmental financial targets regarding gross profit on labour and sales., • Authorise job estimates and manage the final invoicing process., • Monitor key performance indicators (KPIs) such as labour utilisation, efficiency, and health and safety records. Health & Safety • Champion a safety-first culture within the workshop., • Conduct regular safety audits and ensure all equipment is maintained to LOLER and PUWER regulations., • Ensure all vehicle safety inspections and defect reporting are carried out meticulously. Qualifications • Proven experience as a Service Manager, Workshop Controller, or Senior Supervisor within the UK Commercial Vehicle sector (essential)., • In-depth knowledge of HGV, LGV, or PSV maintenance and repair., • A technical qualification (NVQ Level 3 in Heavy Vehicle Maintenance or equivalent) is highly desirable., • IRTE (Institute of Road Transport Engineers) membership or working towards it is beneficial. Required Skills • Strong understanding of DVSA standards, O-Licensing requirements, and operator compliance., • Proficiency in using Garage Management Systems (e.g., Kerridge, Autoline, Protractor) and Microsoft Office., • Commercially astute with a proven track record of driving profitability., • Excellent communication and conflict-resolution skills., • Ability to work under pressure in a fast-paced, time-sensitive environment.
