Job DescriptionBrooklyn Heights Montessori School (BHMS) offers a challenging and comprehensive curriculum built on the philosophy of Maria Montessori to children aged two years through eighth grade. Students work and learn in mixed-age classes led by teaching teams of thoughtful and well-trained professionals. The students have exposure to a full range of academic and artistic courses. BHMS also offers an after-school program and a summer day camp. The School is housed in a beautiful facility in the Cobble Hill section of Brooklyn and is ideally located for convenient access to all parts of Manhattan and Brooklyn. Job Description: Facilities Maintenance Technician (Full-Time, Leave Replacement) • Position Type: Full-Time, Temporary (Leave Replacement), • Reports To: CFOO and Facilities Manager, • Location: Brooklyn, New York, • Anticipated Start Date: Immediate The ideal candidate is proactive, detail-oriented, and experienced in maintaining school or institutional facilities, with a strong commitment to safety, service, and collaboration. This role involves both indoor and outdoor work in a dynamic school environment with children present. The employee must be able to stand, walk, climb stairs, and perform manual labor for extended periods. Responsibilities Include (but are not limited to): Facilities Maintenance & Repairs • Perform routine and preventive maintenance on school buildings, systems, and equipment, including HVAC, plumbing, electrical, carpentry, and painting., • Respond to and complete maintenance work orders in a timely and professional manner., • Conduct daily inspections of classrooms, common areas, restrooms, offices, and exterior spaces to identify and address issues., • Assist with contractor oversight and vendor coordination as needed.Campus Operations & Event Support, • Set up and break down furniture and equipment for school events, assemblies, parent meetings, and rentals., • Support daily campus operations, including deliveries, room reconfigurations, and special projects., • Assist with seasonal needs such as snow removal, landscaping, and summer campus preparations.Safety, Security, and Compliance, • Follow all school safety protocols, including OSHA standards and NYC Department of Buildings and Fire Department regulations., • Support emergency preparedness procedures and respond to facilities-related emergencies as needed., • Maintain tools, equipment, and storage areas in an organized and safe condition.Skills and Requirements:, • High school diploma or equivalent required; trade school or technical certification preferred., • Minimum of 5 years of facilities maintenance experience in a school, university, hospital, or commercial building environment., • Working knowledge of building systems (HVAC, plumbing, electrical, carpentry, painting)., • NYC Certificates of Fitness – must hold an S-95 certificate (required), • Other certifications (optional): F-60, F-80, F07, S12, S13, • willingness to obtain other certificates as needed, • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds and perform physically demanding tasks., • Strong organizational, communication, and customer-service skills., • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a school community., • Flexibility to work occasional evenings and weekends for events or emergencies., • Successful completion of background checks and required school clearances., • Experience working in an independent or K–12 school environment (strongly preferred), • Experience working with contractors, vendors, and external service providers., • Knowledge of building management systems (BMS) or computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS), • Strong customer-service orientation and ability to interact professionally with students, faculty, and families., • Bilingual (English/Spanish) preferred.Brooklyn Heights Montessori School has an institutional commitment to the principles of diversity, social justice and equity. Salary is commensurate with experience, qualifications and aligned with the school’s financial landscape.
