Job Description Job Title: Sheet Metal Worker – HVAC Ducts and Fabrication Job Description This role focuses on installing, altering, and repairing sheet metal products and HVAC duct systems by accurately reading blueprints and using a variety of fabrication equipment. The position combines shop and field work, requiring strong mechanical aptitude, excellent math skills, and a commitment to quality and safety while assembling ducts, hoods, and other sheet metal components for air-conditioning and heating systems. Responsibilities • Install, alter, and repair sheet metal products and equipment, including ducts and hoods for HVAC systems, by following blueprints, drawings, and work orders., • Read and interpret blueprints accurately to determine layout, dimensions, and specifications for sheet metal fabrication and installation., • Plan and coordinate daily tasks and calculate the amount of material required to complete assigned work efficiently., • Prepare, set up, and operate equipment such as power saws, drill presses, hand and power shears, pan and box brakes, lock formers, cleat benders, and rollers to cut, punch, thread, and form sheet metal., • Coordinate and assemble ducts, hoods, and other sheet metal products, ensuring all components fit correctly and function as intended., • Perform assembly tasks including soldering and bolting connections, applying insulation as required, and securing all joints and seams., • Inspect assemblies and installations to confirm conformance with specifications, building standards, and project requirements., • Conduct quality assurance checks on ducts and other sheet metal installations to verify operational performance and identify any necessary corrective actions., • Troubleshoot service issues using systematic, thoughtful, timely, and effective solutions and procedures., • Demonstrate and maintain proper and safe use of tools, machinery, and related equipment at all times., • Provide direction and technical guidance to less experienced workers to support their development and ensure consistent work quality., • Deliver professional, quality-focused customer service during on-site work and interactions., • Minimum of 2 years of experience in sheet metal installation and fabrication, specifically related to assembling hoods and sheet metal air-conditioning and heating units., • Minimum of 1 year of experience in a manufacturing environment operating machines., • Proven ability to accurately read and interpret blueprints for sheet metal work and duct installation., • Experience bending or forming material to produce final sheet metal products., • Strong knowledge and hands-on experience with sheet metal work, including cutting, forming, and fabrication., • Ability to lift and handle heavy materials and tools safely., • Excellent math skills to measure, calculate, and lay out materials accurately., • Ability to troubleshoot service issues using systematic and effective problem-solving methods., • Demonstrated ability to use sheet metal fabrication tools and equipment, including power saws, drill presses, hand and power shears, pan and box brakes, lock formers, cleat benders, rollers, grinders, and sanding tools., • Experience working with HVAC ducts, sheet metal duct work, and sheet metal fabrication for air-conditioning and heating systems., • Ability to follow and apply building codes and specifications related to sheet metal and HVAC installations, with knowledge of building codes preferred., • Experience assembling and installing HVAC ducts, hoods, and sheet metal air-conditioning and heating units., • Familiarity with metal framing and sheet metal cutting processes., • Experience using precision measuring tools such as micrometers to verify dimensions and tolerances., • Exposure to laser cutting or laser-guided equipment in sheet metal fabrication environments., • Ability to apply insulation to ductwork and sheet metal components as required by project specifications., • Strong attention to detail with a focus on quality assurance and conformance to specifications., • Effective communication skills to coordinate tasks and provide guidance to less experienced workers. In the shop, you operate equipment such as power saws, drill presses, hand and power shears, pan and box brakes, lock formers, cleat benders, rollers, grinders, sanding tools, and potentially laser equipment to cut, form, and fabricate sheet metal. In the field, you install ducts, hoods, and related components on-site, perform quality checks, and make adjustments as needed. The environment is hands-on and physically active, involving lifting heavy materials and tools, working around machinery, and following strict safety practices and procedures. Work hours align with typical industrial and construction schedules, and attire is practical work clothing suitable for shop and field conditions, including appropriate safety gear as required. Job Type & Location This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Tonawanda, NY. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $22.00 - $30.00/hr.
