Job DescriptionLicensed Master Social Worker (LMSW) - Emergency DepartmentJob Type: Temporary (Immediate start through March 2026) Pay Rate: $48/hour Location: Kingston, NY | On-siteJob OverviewMadison Approach Staffing is recruiting for a Licensed Master Social Worker (LMSW) to join our client's Emergency Department at a large hospital system serving the Hudson Valley region. This role will provide comprehensive psychosocial services to patients and families presenting to the Emergency Department, with a primary focus on crisis intervention, safety assessments, connecting patients with community resources, and facilitating appropriate dispositions. The ideal candidate will conduct rapid biopsychosocial assessments, collaborate with ED physicians and nursing staff, address immediate psychosocial needs, and coordinate follow-up care for patients in crisis. This position works the evening shift (2:15pm-10:15pm) and requires the ability to manage high-acuity situations in a fast-paced emergency setting. This is a temporary assignment with immediate start through March.Key Responsibilities • Conduct rapid psychosocial assessments of Emergency Department patients presenting with mental health crises, substance use issues, domestic violence, homelessness, suicidal ideation, or other urgent psychosocial needs, • Perform suicide risk assessments and safety planning for patients presenting with self-harm or suicidal ideation, • Provide immediate crisis intervention counseling to patients and families experiencing acute emotional distress, trauma, or psychiatric emergencies, • Collaborate with ED physicians, psychiatric consultation services, and nursing staff to develop appropriate treatment and disposition plans for patients in crisis, • Coordinate psychiatric admissions, voluntary and involuntary psychiatric hospitalizations, and transfers to appropriate mental health facilities, • Connect patients with community crisis resources including mobile crisis teams, crisis hotlines, outpatient mental health services, and substance use treatment programs, • Assist patients experiencing homelessness with access to emergency shelter, housing assistance programs, and social services, • Provide support and resources to victims of domestic violence, sexual assault, and elder abuse; make appropriate referrals to law enforcement and protective services when indicated, • Screen patients for social determinants of health including food insecurity, housing instability, financial hardship, and lack of insurance coverage, • Facilitate emergency placement for vulnerable adults and children requiring protective services or alternative living arrangements, • Coordinate follow-up care and community resources for patients being discharged from the Emergency Department, • Maintain accurate and timely documentation of all assessments, interventions, safety plans, and referrals in electronic health record system, • Collaborate with case management, utilization review, and hospital administration regarding complex patient situations, • Provide education to patients and families regarding mental health resources, substance use treatment options, and available community support services, • Respond to requests from ED medical staff for social work consultation throughout the evening shiftRequired Skills & Experience, • Licensure: Current and valid Licensed Master Social Worker (LMSW) license in New York State, • Education: Master of Social Work (MSW) degree from a CSWE-accredited program, • Experience: Minimum 2-3 years of social work experience, preferably in emergency department, psychiatric emergency services, or crisis intervention setting, • Crisis Assessment: Strong skills in crisis intervention, suicide risk assessment, mental status evaluation, and safety planning, • Clinical Skills: Knowledge of psychosocial assessment, brief counseling techniques, trauma-informed care, and de-escalation strategies, • Emergency Medicine Knowledge: Understanding of emergency department operations, medical terminology, and ability to work effectively in high-stress, fast-paced environment, • Mental Health Expertise: Familiarity with psychiatric diagnoses, substance use disorders, and mental health crisis management, • Resource Knowledge: Strong knowledge of community mental health resources, crisis services, substance use treatment programs, domestic violence services, and emergency assistance programs, • Documentation: Proficiency with electronic health record systems and ability to maintain thorough, accurate clinical documentation under time pressure, • Communication: Excellent verbal and written communication skills with ability to interact effectively with patients in crisis, distressed families, law enforcement, and emergency medical staff, • Interdisciplinary Collaboration: Proven ability to work collaboratively with ED physicians, nurses, security staff, and psychiatric consultants, • Cultural Competency: Demonstrated ability to work sensitively with diverse populations including patients with mental illness, substance use disorders, trauma histories, and complex psychosocial needs, • Independent Judgment: Strong clinical judgment and ability to make rapid assessments and decisions independently during evening hoursPreferred Skills & Experience, • Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) credential, • Experience specifically in Emergency Department or psychiatric emergency services, • Training in suicide risk assessment tools (Columbia-Suicide Severity Rating Scale, SAD PERSONS, etc.), • Bilingual capabilities (Spanish or other languages commonly spoken in Hudson Valley region), • Knowledge of New York State Mental Hygiene Law including involuntary commitment procedures, • Experience with substance use assessment and intervention, • Training in trauma-informed care and crisis intervention models, • Familiarity with domestic violence dynamics and safety planning, • Experience coordinating psychiatric hospitalizations and psychiatric bed placement, • Understanding of Medicaid/Medicare coverage for mental health and substance use services, • Experience working with homeless populations and housing resources, • Knowledge of child and adult protective services reporting requirements, • Certification in Crisis Intervention or related specialtyWork Schedule & Details, • Evening shift: 2:15pm - 10:15pm, • Monday through Friday or may include weekend shifts depending on department needs, • On-site position in Emergency Department, Kingston, NY, • Temporary assignment: Immediate start through March 2026, • Fast-paced, high-acuity environment requiring ability to manage multiple crises simultaneously, • Requires flexibility to respond to urgent psychiatric emergencies and high-risk situations throughout the shift, • May involve interaction with law enforcement, security personnel, and agitated or potentially aggressive patients #zrCompany DescriptionWe don’t just want to find you a job, we want to help you achieve your goals.
