Interested in exploring the role of adipose tissues in mucosal inflammation in a supportive, creative, and inclusive environment? The Grasset lab Our lab’s long-term objective is to uncover novel mechanisms underlying the pathology of Crohn’s disease (CD), a progressive incurable disease characterized by transmural intestinal inflammation leading to complications often requiring bowel resection surgery. The goal is to identify novel therapeutic targets by focusing on two previously disconnected hallmarks of CD: expanded mesenteric adipose tissue wrapping around the intestine – or creeping fat – and anti-microbial antibodies, both correlating with disease complications. Studying these hallmarks will further reveal unexplored relationships between adipocytes, stromal cells, and immune cells driving B cell responses in gut homeostasis and inflammation. Understanding these relationships will impact how we perceive immune responses at other mucosal sites and systemically. Ongoing projects include: the study of the impact of CD-specific microbiota on stromal cell-supported lymphoid structures embedded in mesenteric adipose tissue; specific mechanisms by which stromal cells and adipocytes communicate with B cells; and the subsequent impact on B cell activation and their differentiation to anti-microbial antibody-producing plasma cells. Future projects will investigate how these relationships are established in early life and evolve over time. The Director of Molecular Diagnostics serves as the CLIA Laboratory Director for NYGC's clinical molecular diagnostics laboratory. This role provides clinical and scientific leadership for a CLIA-certified, CAP-accredited laboratory performing next-generation sequencing (NGS)-based genetic and oncology testing. The Director is responsible for the clinical validity, regulatory compliance, and operational excellence of all laboratory testing activities. This includes oversight of assay development and validation, quality management systems, regulatory compliance, personnel competency, and clinical interpretation and reporting of molecular diagnostic tests. The Director ensures compliance with CLIA, New York State Department of Health (NYS CLEP), CAP, and other applicable federal and state regulations, including licensure requirements for laboratories providing testing services across multiple U.S. states. The successful candidate will be jointly mentored by Drs. Tuuli Lappalainen and Neville Sanjana at the intersection of statistical genetics and functional genomics analyses and tech development and have the opportunity to also be affiliated with New York University. About the labs The Sanjana lab works at the intersection of genomics and bioengineering. We are curious about many things and are passionate about what we do. We primarily develop new technologies for hacking and understanding biological systems. We try to learn from nature and to re-purpose what we learn to gain deeper insights into how genomes and neural systems function. In the lab, we modify genomes, perform high-throughput screens, differentiate human neurons from stem cells, watch synapses rewire, find vulnerabilities in cancer cells and have a lot of fun in the process.
