The Lappalainen & Sanjana Labs at the New York Genome Center (NYGC) are looking for a motivated individual to work as a Postdoctoral Research Associate within a highly creative and dynamic research team of scientists, computational biologists, bioengineers, and human geneticists. The successful candidate will be jointly mentored by Drs. Tuuli Lappalainen and Neville Sanjana at the intersection of statistical genetics and functional genomics analyses and tech development and have the opportunity to also be affiliated with New York University. About the labs The Sanjana lab works at the intersection of genomics and bioengineering. We are curious about many things and are passionate about what we do. We primarily develop new technologies for hacking and understanding biological systems. We try to learn from nature and to re-purpose what we learn to gain deeper insights into how genomes and neural systems function. In the lab, we modify genomes, perform high-throughput screens, differentiate human neurons from stem cells, watch synapses rewire, find vulnerabilities in cancer cells and have a lot of fun in the process. We aim to have a tangible impact on improving human health by creating new biological tools and fundamental biological discovery. The Lappalainen lab studies functional genetic variation in the human populations by analyzing how genetic variants affect molecular and cellular traits, and how these cellular changes contribute to genetic risk for both common and rare diseases and traits. We analyze these questions both by computational analysis of large genomic, transcriptomic and multi-omic data sets, and by experimental approaches. Our lab includes experts across the field of systems genetics, from statistical genetics and genomics to molecular genomics. About the position We are looking for a postdoctoral scientist eager to understand the impact of human genetic variation on gene expression and phenotypes at the cellular, tissue and physiological levels. This position will be at the intersection of computational and wet-lab work, with co-mentorship by both PIs and membership in both labs. The projects for the postdoctoral scientist combines cutting-edge human genetics and genome technology development, with possible projects in CRISPR and single-cell multi-omics, and its integration with GWAS and eQTL data, including novel data from projects such as Developmental GTEx. Recently, the Sanjana and Lappalainen labs developed STING-seq (Systematic Targeted Inhibition of Noncoding GWAS loci with sequencing): ___. We seek to extend STING-seq to new cell types (including primary cells) and develop next-generation genome editing approaches to answer fundamental questions in human genetics, GWAS and disease biology. In addition, we envision that the postdoctoral scientist will play a major role in developing new projects in a supportive team science environment. We are looking for a highly motivated, independent but team-oriented Laboratory Inventory Associate to join our existing and growing inventory management team. This position will support the Senior Manager, Production Lab with inventory management services, as well as other general support outlined, but not limited to, the duties listed below. This program aims to bridge the gap between large-scale genomic data and transformative clinical impact. The fellowship will provide early-career scientists with the resources and environment to develop next-generation Foundation Models (FMs) for the human genome. While DNA sequencing is now a clinical staple, the noncoding "dark matter" of the genome remains largely undeciphered. AI will play a key role in unlocking the sequence-to-function code. The Zeltser lab is looking for a motivated scientist to join their team as an Assistant Professor of Medical Sciences in Medicine at the Columbia University Medical Center (non-tenure track). The lab studies how the sympathetic nervous system regulates metabolism and how this is impacted by obesity and aging. We utilize a variety of genetically engineered mouse models, virus-based neural tracing and chemogenetic approaches, single nuclear transcriptomics, and in vivo physiological and metabolic measurements. The ultimate goal is to identify neural circuits that regulate distinct aspects of brown fat and function and systemic metabolism. The ideal applicant will be an experienced researcher with expertise in both neuroanatomy and the neurobiology of autonomic regulation of peripheral targets and/or central regulation of metabolic parameters. The procedures for this project require expertise in multiple advanced techniques. The experienced researcher must be able to master state-of-the-art techniques to map and manipulate sympathetic circuits regulating discrete targets in the periphery, including stereotaxic injections, viral tracing, chemogenetics and fiber photometry. In parallel, this project also involves the analysis of physiological phenotypes in vivo, including thermogenesis, glucose uptake and lipolysis. Role: We are seeking an experienced immunologist to lead and build internal immunology research capabilities supporting discovery and preclinical development in inflammation, autoimmunity, and immune-mediated disease. This is a laboratory-based leadership role requiring a strong on-site presence to oversee day-to-day scientific execution, mentor scientists, and help build a rigorous and collaborative research environment. The role will be responsible for establishing and managing internal immunology workflows, developing mechanistically informative assay systems, and driving generation of high-quality data to advance therapeutic programs. The ideal candidate will bring deep expertise in immune cell biology, cytokine and receptor signaling, cellular pharmacology, and disease-relevant model systems, with a strong track record of leading laboratory teams in biotech or pharmaceutical research Responsibilities Key Responsibilities • Lead the design, development, optimization, and execution of in vitro and ex vivo immunology assays to characterize mechanism of action, potency, target engagement, and functional activity of candidate molecules., • Build and manage internal immunology laboratory capabilities, including assay workflows, experimental standards, data quality practices, and day-to-day scientific execution., • Maintain a strong on-site presence in the laboratory to support experimental planning, troubleshoot assays, review data, and provide direct scientific mentorship to team members., • Develop disease-relevant cellular assay systems using primary human immune cells, PBMCs, whole blood, co-culture systems, and non-immune stromal or epithelial cell models where relevant., • Establish and apply functional assays to evaluate cytokine biology, receptor signaling, immune cell activation, differentiation, proliferation, cytotoxicity, apoptosis, and inflammatory mediator production., • Lead immune profiling and mechanistic studies using flow cytometry, multiplex cytokine analysis, ELISA, qPCR, western blotting, and other cell and molecular biology approaches., • Design and interpret studies to define pharmacology in relevant immune and tissue contexts, including pathway modulation, dose response and biomarker changes., • Generate mechanistic and translational data packages that support lead optimization, candidate nomination, and preclinical development., • Work closely with chemistry, DMPK, and translational teams to connect molecular properties with cellular activity, pathway modulation, and biomarker readouts., • Recruit, mentor, and manage scientists and research associates, and foster a rigorous, collaborative, and technically strong laboratory environment. Qualifications • PhD in Immunology, Cell Biology, Pharmacology, or a related discipline, with at least 6 years of drug discovery experience in inflammation and autoimmunity., • Strong scientific background in inflammation, autoimmunity, cytokine biology, receptor pharmacology, and immune cell signaling., • Extensive experience developing and troubleshooting cellular and molecular assays for small molecule and/or biologic discovery programs., • Expertise in primary human cell assays, whole blood or PBMC-based systems, and immune cell functional readouts., • Strong hands-on and scientific expertise in flow cytometry, immune phenotyping, cytokine analysis, and mechanistic assay development., • Solid understanding of translational immunology, including target engagement, pharmacodynamic biomarkers, and PK/PD relationships., • Proven ability to lead laboratory teams, manage scientific priorities, and deliver clear, high-quality experimental data., • Experience in TNF superfamily biology or cytokine receptor signaling., • Experience working in a startup or fast-paced research environment with significant hands-on involvement in lab build-out and assay establishment., • Familiarity with translational biomarker development and integration of in vitro and ex vivo immunology data. The salary range for this position is $160,000-$190,000 per year. The actual compensation offered will be based on factors such as relevant experience, education, and skills. Job Description POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT Assistant Research Scientist Salary Grade 14 $53,808.00 - $64,340.00 Full-Time Position The Research Foundation for Mental Hygiene, Inc. is seeking highly skilled and motivated candidate to fill a full-time Assistant Research Scientist position in the Immunobiology and Immunotherapy Laboratory. The applicant should have extensive experience/expertise in mouse ischemia models, behavioral testing, molecular/cellular analysis, and have the skills with molecular technology. The successful candidate will contribute to studies investigating mechanisms of brain injury, testing novel therapeutic strategies in preclinical models, as well as assessing the therapeutic efficacy of immunotherapy in neurodegenerative diseases. This is a grant-based full-time position for 40 hours per week. Duties and Responsibilities: An Assistant Research Scientist will work closely with the Neurochemistry research team members and share the responsibilities that include but are not limited to: • Design and perform in vivo experiments using mouse ischemia models (e.g., MCAO, photothrombotic, or global ischemia models)., • Design and perform in vivo experiments to assess the efficacy of immunotherapy in mouse models of neurodegenerative diseases., • Administer drugs by intramuscular injection, intravenous injection, or intraperitoneal injection., • Conduct neurological and behavioral assessments (e.g., rotarod, open field, Morris water maze, neurological deficit scoring)., • Perform Western blotting, immunohistochemistry, and related molecular and histological analyses., • Manage animal colonies, perform surgeries, and ensure compliance with IACUC and institutional animal care protocols., • Maintain accurate and organized records of experiments, data, and results., • Collaborate with team members and contribute to data interpretation, presentations, and publications.
