Reporting to the Hospital President, the Chief Nursing Officer (CNO) is responsible for overseeing the strategy, operations, and systems that ensure the delivery of patient-centered nursing care at the highest quality. A key aspect of this role is advancing nursing practice through continuous professional development, innovation in nursing care, and a commitment to operational excellence. The CNO provides executive leadership in all areas related to nursing leadership, clinical practice, quality improvement, and revenue optimization/cost management, ensuring that nursing initiatives align with and support the hospital's strategic and operational goals. They will recognize the inclusive and collaborative culture of the hospital that has made it a success in the community and among its patients. Essential Duties & Responsibilities including but not limited to: • The CNO is directly responsible for nursing practice throughout all areas/services at New England Baptist Hospital including patient care units, perioperative services and ambulatory services., • Responsible for the effective selection, development and performance management of staff, both directly and through the Nursing Executive Directors and Managers to ensure the right talent is in place to achieve staff experience, clinical, patient experience, quality and financial goals., • The CNO directs a team of Executive Directors and Managers in the delivery of systems and programs designed to promote the efficient and effective delivery of nursing care. The CNO serves as a mentor and a resource to both the Nursing Executive Directors and Nurse Managers who participate on the various service line teams., • The CNO is a vital member of the Senior Leadership Team, and both actively and directly collaborates in the development and ultimate success of the Hospital strategic and operational priorities. The CNO develops and sustains relationships that are built on a high degree of trust, effective communication, collaboration, and mutual respect with all staff, physicians, Board Members, Beth Israel Lahey Health (BILH) colleagues and community members., • Ensures that development and continuous evaluation of strategies and systems are designed to promote nursing care and other patient care services of the highest safety and quality, and that patient care is grounded in evidence-based practice and focused on the needs of patients and their families., • Works collaboratively with the Chief Medical Officer and Departments of Quality/Safety and Infection Prevention in the development, implementation, measurement and reporting of quality improvement projects., • Provides leadership and guidance in conceptualizing and implementing a philosophy of nursing, which advances the discipline of nursing, facilitates the design/redesign of patient care delivery, builds relationships among constituents both within and outside the nursing division, and promotes education, information sharing, and professional development., • Collaborates with the Sr. Leadership Team, direct reports and others in the development and implementation of operating and capital budgets. Develops and implements ongoing measures/evaluation methods related to all dimensions of performance inclusive of budget and productivity targets., • In partnership with Human Resources, ensures the recruitment, retention, development, succession planning for and engagement of patient care team members and leadership., • Lead in the support of a strong culture of respect and belonging and work on the development and implementation of efforts that prioritize collaboration and career satisfaction., • Participates in development, education and implementation of technology solutions that supports both clinical and administrative operations, including but not limited to EPIC, Workday, productivity applications., • Forges and maintains relationships with BILH, and identifies opportunities to expand services, create efficiencies, and further advance the relationship. Performs assessments to determine areas for improvement and better collaboration., • Partners with the CMO to enhance the care delivery model with a focus on care coordination, patient flow, length of stay, readmission rates, access to care, eliminating harm, capacity management, and quality and efficiency of care. Implements rapid implementation of best practices understanding what is needed for adaptation by providers and sites of care., • Sustains and enhances the shared governance model for nursing to include implementation of a nursing organizational infrastructure that supports this model., • Provides leadership for continuous improvement in clinical quality and patient safety, including implementing National Patient Safety Goals and staying informed on trends in quality improvement. Clinical best practices are regularly integrated into care delivery., • Ensures the ongoing compliance with all relevant regulatory bodies, including The Joint Commission, CMS, and the Department of Public Health., • Embraces systemness and represents nursing and NEBH in system-level initiatives and committees, contributing to enterprise strategy and shared services., • Leads or supports integration efforts across sites, including care protocols, EMR use, and performance standards. Educational Requirements/Credentials: • Master's degree in Nursing or other healthcare related field, • Doctoral Degree Preferred. (DNP or PhD), • Ten years progressively more responsible executive/director level leadership experience in patient care in an acute care setting. Strong preference for surgical focus or ambulatory surgery center experience, • Advanced knowledge of professional nursing practice in an executive or specialty practice area as evidenced through certification (e.g. CENP, NEA-BC, FACHE, etc.) preferred., • Epic experience a strong plus and/or a thorough understanding of the Electronic Medical Record system, concepts of clinical informatics, and other advanced health care technologies., • A thorough understanding of the health care environment and all applicable laws and regulations. Nursing Practice: Directly responsible for nursing practice throughout all services New England Baptist Hospital to include the patient care units, surgical services, ambulatory nursing practice, Joint Commission compliance, Magnet designation and other ancillary services. Nursing Administration: Directs the delivery of systems and programs designed to promote the efficient and effective delivery of nursing care. Serve as a mentor and a resource to both the Executive Directors and to the nurse managers who participate on the various service line teams. Executive Leadership: Serves at the executive level in the hospital and assumes an active leadership role with the hospital's governing body, senior leadership, medical staff, management and other clinical leaders in the hospital's decision-making structure. Participates in decisions on overall strategy and direction of the organization. Problem Solving: Ability to address problems that are broad, complex and abstract, often involving Medical Center-wide issues and requiring substantial creativity, resourcefulness, staff engagement, Lean diagnostic techniques, negotiation and diplomacy to develop solutions. Independence of Action: Ability to set direction and vision for major departments or multiple departments. Establishes priorities, develops policies and allocates resources. Written Communications: Ability to communicate complex information in English effectively in writing to all levels of staff, management and external customers across functional areas. Oral Communications: Ability to verbally communicate complex concepts in English and address sensitive situations, resolve conflicts, negotiate, motivate and persuade others. Knowledge: Ability to demonstrate broad and comprehensive knowledge of theories, concepts, practices and policies with the ability to use them in complex and/or unprecedented situations across multiple functional areas. Team Work: Ability to lead and direct multiple collaborative teams for large projects or groups both internal and external to the hospital and across functional areas. Results have significant implications for the management and operations of the organization. Customer Service: Ability to lead operational initiatives to meet or exceed customer service standards and expectations in assigned unit(s) and/or across multiple areas in a timely and respectful manner.
