This position requires the exercise of independent judgment, timeliness, accuracy and responsibility with minimal supervision by the director or supervisor. \n\n RESPONSIBILITIES \n\n Cytology Specimen Prep Duties and Technologist Responsibilities \n\n\n\t • Prepares cytologic specimens for analysis\n\t, • Assures proper maintenance of equipment\n\t, • Verifies and assures accuracy of specimen and patient information.\n\t, • Enters information into computer reporting system according to standard laboratory procedures\n\t, • Performs all appropriate laboratory technical procedures including specimen prep, staining, destaining and restaining and screening with little or no supervision\n\t, • Screens specimens and dots slides as appropriate for pathologist\n\t, • Performs testing and reports results on laboratory specimens\n\t, • Performs all duties associated with FNA specimen collection, processing and screening\n\t, • Meets the diagnostic performance guideline established by the medical director\n\t, • Performs job duties in an honest, punctual and ethical manner\n\t, • Reviews and updates all cytology related procedures and procedure manuals on an annual basis and prepares for review by the Medical Director\n\t, • Performs quality control and maintains all appropriate documentation\n\t, • Achieves minimum daily workload productivity as established by the Medical Director\n\t, • Adheres to NYS screening guidelines for cytotechnologists and maintains proper documents pertaining to number of slides screened\n\t, • Maintains competency and assumes responsibility for continuing education relevant to responsibilities\n\t, • Accepts and identifies specimens received in the laboratory\n\t, • Checks specimen container and requisition for proper identification and specimen transport condition\n\t, • Enters patient demographics and specimen information into the pathology information system.\n\t, • Selects paperwork required to ensure specimen identification, specimen processing and billing\n\t, • Checks and maintains accurate specimen identification\n\t, • Determines correct fixatives for requested procedures\n\t, • Weighs and measures specimens\n\t, • Selects tissues and cassettes for processing and stores residual tissues using methods that insure preservation\n\t, • Records required information necessary for subsequent procedures such as embedding and cutting\n\t, • Dictates gross descriptions clearly, accurately and according to guidelines of the department\n\t, • Photographs specimens correctly\n\t, • Implements proper tissue processing procedures\n\t, • Demonstrates the ability to prepare reagents for bone marrow Wright Giemsa stain\n\t, • Performs Wright Giemsa stain on bone marrow smears\n\t, • Assists the Histotechnologists with slide labeling as necessary\n\t, • Assists with cover slipping and staining procedures as necessary\n\t, • Maintains laboratory equipment, including monitoring and changing reagents as necessary\n\t, • Maintains any temperature or other laboratory related charts as requested\n\t, • Performs other qualified laboratory duties as requested by supervisor\n\t, • Assures adequate laboratory supply inventory\n\t, • Thoroughly, accurately and legibly documents test results\n\t, • Understands the proper use of all personal protective equipment necessary to perform all assigned duties.\n\t, • Reviewed standard operating procedures and maintenance manuals for equipment\n\t, • Establishes relations, supports and provides laboratory assistance as needed\n\t, • Maintains daily contact with pathologists and other medical staff\n\t, • Promotes congenial laboratory work environment\n\t, • Has a clear understanding of who the primary customers are and what they require; OR\n\t, • Must meet New York State Education Department requirements as a Cytotechnologist and hold a NYSED license in Cytotechnology.\n\n\n\n\n\n
