Job DescriptionJob Title: Data Center Operating Engineer Job Description This temp-to-perm role offers the opportunity to operate and maintain critical data center infrastructure in a high-availability environment. You will ensure continuous, reliable operation of electrical and mechanical systems, including power, cooling, and life safety systems, to maintain 100% uptime for a large on-site data center campus in Chandler, AZ. Responsibilities • Maintain, monitor, and perform preventive maintenance and continuous operation of all data center building systems to maintain 100% uptime, including fire and life safety systems, mechanical systems (HVAC, chillers, pumps, valves, plumbing, controls), and electrical systems (UPS, ATS, STS, PDU, generators, primary switchgear, power distribution, transformers, emergency and standard lighting, and hot water systems)., • Monitor the operation of refrigeration, chilled water, and air conditioning equipment, boilers, ventilating systems, water heaters, pumps, valves, piping, filters, and other mechanical and electrical equipment to ensure proper performance., • Record equipment readings, analyze trends, and make necessary adjustments to maintain optimal and safe operation of all critical systems., • Analyze the operation of various systems, determine the cause of problems or malfunctions, and take timely corrective action to prevent impact to data center uptime., • Learn and understand the data center site layout, systems, and dependencies in order to effectively manage incidents and events that put critical systems at risk., • Manage work orders using a computerized maintenance management system (CMMS), including creating, updating, and closing work orders, and ensuring accurate documentation of all activities., • Coordinate and oversee vendor activities on-site, ensuring compliance with procedures, safety requirements, and quality standards., • Handle customer-facing tickets professionally, providing clear communication, timely updates, and effective resolution of issues related to building systems., • Comply with departmental policies for the safe storage, usage, and disposal of hazardous materials, and maintain a clean, safe, and organized work environment., • Understand and follow emergency escalation procedures to respond appropriately to critical incidents and system alarms., • Apply a mission-critical troubleshooting mindset, focusing on risk, redundancy, and failure prevention rather than simple repair., • Interpret and respond to building management system (BMS) alarms, trends, and system data to make informed operational decisions., • Follow standard operating procedures (SOPs), lockout/tagout (LOTO), and OSHA safety practices consistently and accurately in all tasks., • Work the assigned night shift schedule (Sunday–Tuesday and every Wednesday on, 6:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m.) after initial training, and remain available to respond to site emergencies as required., • Perform additional job-related duties as assigned to support data center reliability and operations.Essential Skills, • Minimum of 2 years of experience working in a data center or other critical facility environment., • Hands-on experience with building systems, including UPS systems, emergency generators, and switchgears., • Strong troubleshooting skills with a mission-critical mindset, focused on risk management, redundancy, and failure prevention in chillers, cooling plants, and HVAC systems., • Solid mechanical and controls knowledge, including pumps, valves, refrigeration systems, CRAH/CRAC units, and cooling towers., • Ability to interpret building management system (BMS) alarms, trends, and system data to support operational decisions., • Demonstrated verbal and written communication skills for effective interaction with colleagues, vendors, and customers., • Working knowledge of computer applications, including MS Office (Word, Excel, Outlook), Google Suite, and CMMS platforms., • Experience with HVAC or electrical systems; expertise in either discipline is acceptable., • Strong procedural discipline, with proven adherence to standard operating procedures (SOPs), lockout/tagout (LOTO), and OSHA safety practices., • Ability to work night shifts and flexible schedules, including holidays, and respond to site emergencies as needed., • Physical ability to frequently walk, climb, bend, kneel, lift, stoop, and work or extend overhead., • Capability to lift a minimum of 50 pounds safely., • Ability to climb stairs, navigate rooftops, and use ladders up to 30 feet, including climbing ladders with a 300-pound weight limit.Additional Skills & Qualifications, • Experience working with Corrigo or similar CMMS platforms., • Universal EPA 608 certification., • Training in NFPA 70E electrical safety standards., • Experience with procedure writing for maintenance and operational activities., • Familiarity with mission-critical environments and high-availability operational practices., • Strong attention to detail and documentation accuracy in a regulated environment.Why Work Here? Work Environment This is a full-time, on-site role based at a large, campus-like data center facility in Chandler, AZ. The position begins with approximately three weeks on a Monday–Friday day shift for training, then transitions to a regular night shift schedule of Sunday–Tuesday and every Wednesday on, from 6:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. The work involves frequent walking across a large campus, climbing stairs, navigating rooftops to access equipment, and using ladders up to 30 feet, including climbing ladders with a 300-pound weight limit. You will regularly bend, kneel, lift at least 50 pounds, stoop, and work or extend overhead while servicing mechanical and electrical equipment. The environment is highly safety-conscious and procedure-driven, with strict adherence to SOPs, LOTO, OSHA practices, and proper handling and disposal of hazardous materials. You must be able to work different schedules, cover holidays as needed, and respond to site emergencies. Daily work includes use of building management systems, CMMS tools, and standard office software to monitor systems, manage work orders, and document activities. Job Type & Location This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Chandler, AZ. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $40.00 - $45.00/hr.
