Job Description About the Role Hamilton-Madison House (HMH) is the leading provider of behavioral health services for New York City’s Asian community and the second largest provider in the country. HMH serves nearly 1,000 community members through a comprehensive program model that understands and incorporates the strengths of individual cultures and addresses the stigma related to mental illness. Services range from psychological services; personalized recovery-oriented services for individuals with mental illness; recovery programming for addiction in six languages and seven dialects; supportive housing for people with mental health issues; and training and internship opportunities for graduate students in social work, mental health counseling, and psychology. With a team of over 900 staff and an annual budget of $130 million, the Center carries out its mission through three core strategies: • Operating Programs that pilot new ideas and address local challenges;, • Conducting original research to evaluate what works—and what doesn’t; and THE OPPORTUNITY The Center for Justice Innovation is seeking a Counselor, Jail Diversion to join a team of clinicians who assess the clinical and services needs of defendants currently being held in pretrial detention. This will include coordinating closely with the Manhattan Felony Alternative to Incarceration (ATI) Court to identify and assess potential participants. The ATI Court, which is led by Administrative Judge Ellen Biben, seeks to forge a new response to individuals charged with felonies by linking them to community-based social services. The Court is the first of its kind, providing an innovative model for other jurisdictions seeking to develop and implement meaningful post-conviction sentencing options for individuals facing felony charges. Reporting to the Senior Social Worker, Jail Diversion, the Counselor will be responsible for conducting independent clinical assessments and drafting treatment recommendations for defendants being held in pretrial detention. The Counselor will conduct these assessments and complete these treatment plans according to a strict timeline, ensuring that the process is completed as quickly as possible. The goal is to provide information that will enable defense attorneys, prosecutors, and judges to resolve cases as quickly as possible, significantly reducing the time people spend in pretrial detention. An essential and dynamic feature of the Counselor’s role will be close collaboration with key external stakeholders. They will work regularly with New York City defense organizations and other defense attorneys, prosecutors from the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office and the Office of the Special Narcotics Prosecutor, staff at the Department of Correction and Correctional Health Services, the judge and court staff from New York County Supreme Court who oversee the Felony ATI Court, and an array of community-based alternative to incarceration and community-based providers. The program diverts participants from jail or prison by conducting clinical assessments and then connecting them with long-term treatment in the community, along with rigorous judicial monitoring. The court aims to strengthen the justice system’s ability to identify, assess, and monitor individual participants, to create linkages between the justice and mental health systems, and to improve public safety by ensuring that participants receive high quality community-based services. The Brooklyn Felony ATI Program utilizes a similar model to Brooklyn Mental Health Court, serving individuals facing felony charges who are not otherwise eligible for Mental Health Court or other treatment courts in Brooklyn. The program receives referrals through two pathways: (1) the dedicated Felony ATI court part within Brooklyn Supreme Court, with a dedicated judge and supervising prosecutor; and (2) through other court parts throughout Brooklyn Criminal and Supreme Court. Regardless of the referral pathway, all participants receive individualized assessments, onsite and community-based services, compliance monitoring and judicial monitoring for the life of the case. BMHC is seeking a Social Worker for its Brooklyn Felony Diversion programs. The Social Worker will serve individuals who are mandated to Felony Alternative to Incarceration (Felony ATI) programming through the Brooklyn Supreme Court. Job Description About the Role The Home Study Case Worker plays a critical role in evaluating a potential sponsor’s ability to provide a safe, stable, and supportive environment for an unaccompanied child prior to reunification. This includes conducting in-depth, trauma-informed home visits; verifying information gathered by the care provider; and assessing all potential risks, protective factors, and support needs. The HS Case Worker collaborates closely with the HS Supervisor and relevant stakeholders including the care provider’s case manager and clinician, the sponsor, and, when necessary, family members of the sponsor or minor to ensure the child’s safety and well-being. Home Study services are provided throughout the New York City tri-state area and nationally. This role requires frequent travel across states and may include overnight stays to complete in-person assessments as needed. Job Description JOB DESCRIPTION JOB TITLE: Recreational Specialist FLSA: Non- Exempt LOCATION: Bronx, NY REPORTS TO: Social Worker Supervisor SALARY: $35,000.00 -$40,000.00 SUMMARY: The Recreation Specialist will work as a team member to create and support recreational activities for children living within our homeless shelter. This position reports to Social Work Supervisor to ensure that all activities are appropriate and meet the needs of the clients. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: • Works as a team member to provide academic, recreational and social skills programming to the school age children/young adults in the Shelter., • Creates a group environment that promotes and expects positive behavioral norms. Helps create a safe-haven for youth living within the homeless shelter setting., • Develops and implements age appropriate activities and programs., • Documents monthly participation and outcomes; analyzes results and prepares recommendations., • Participates in initial training, ongoing staff development and supervision., • Maintains proper safety standards in regards to the health of participants in all programs., • Ensures that the recreational space is clean and well maintained. High School Diploma/GED required, College degree preferred. Previous experience working with children and/or young adults is essential. Experience working with low-income population preferred. Program hours include afternoons, evenings, some weekends and holidays. Must be computer savvy. A clean/valid NYS Driver’s License is required.
