The Global Product Sustainability Specialist is responsible for evaluating and implementing product sustainability regulations and requirements, as well as developing, executing, and overseeing global programs that promote product sustainability and stewardship across all technology centers and relevant sites. This position oversees the comprehensive planning, implementation, and reporting of global sustainability compliance initiatives, ensuring consistency with both internal business goals and external regulatory standards. The role requires advanced knowledge in product sustainability regulations, product stewardship principles, sustainability tools and database systems, as well as knowledge in sustainability frameworks. The position needs a strong focus on compliance, innovation, and cross-functional collaboration in the medical device and diagnostics industry. This position will report to the Global Product Sustainability Sr. Manager under the corporate sustainability leadership. Key Accountabilities Regulatory Compliance & Stewardship Ensure compliance with global regulations (e.g., RoHS, REACH, SVHC, SCIP, POPs, PFAS, TSCA, EU Green Deal, PPWR, ESPR, BAT, WFD, EPR...). Lead efforts in documentation, hazardous substance tracking, and regulatory reporting using digital tools and data systems. Advise on substance content requests from customers, authorities, and regulatory agencies. Support R&D and procurement in selecting safer, environmentally friendly materials and components. Technical Leadership & Innovation Serve as subject matter expert on product stewardship, providing training and guidance to internal teams. Apply systems engineering and materials science principles to optimize product performance, safety, and sustainability. Identify and deliver project opportunities in new product development, continuous improvement, cost reduction, and regulatory compliance. Program Leadership & Strategy Lead the deployment of sustainability tool/system and compliance databases across all TCs at Werfen. Partner with IT, R&D, Operations and other stakeholder teams for the successful implementation of the tools. Lead multi-year global programs to embed sustainability and stewardship across the product lifecycle (from design to end-of-life). Develop and execute global strategies for chemical, material, and instrument compliance, including hazardous substance management, eco-design, and circular economy practices. Collaborate with global sustainability teams, technology centers, and cross-functional stakeholders (R&D, QA/RA, Operations, Supply Chain, Marketing, IT) to integrate sustainability into product development and lifecycle management. Define and maintain program governance structures, KPIs, and detailed roadmaps aligned with business priorities. Continuous Improvement & Collaboration Foster a culture of continuous improvement, knowledge sharing, and cross-functional collaboration across global sites. Initiate and maintain relationships with external consultants and resources as required. Reporting & Communication Develop and deliver periodic program reports and dashboards to track progress, risks, and milestones. Prepare and present regular updates to senior leadership and executive sponsors, driving decision-making and transparency. Master’s or Ph.D. preferred. Experience: Minimum 5 years in sustainability & product stewardship, chemicals compliance, or environmental sustainability, program/project management, preferably in medical devices, MedTech, Pharma or regulated industry. Language: Native or high level of business English required Preferred Qualifications Professional certification in sustainability, environmental management, or MBA. Experience with digital product compliance, digital product passports, and sustainability tools. Familiarity with ESG reporting frameworks (GRI, TCFD, CSRD). Skills & Capabilities: Strong knowledge of global regulatory frameworks and sustainability principles (life cycle assessment, eco-design, carbon footprint, circular economy). Proficiency in program management and regulatory software tools. Excellent communication, organizational, and analytical skills.
