The successful candidate will join an expanding, dedicated team at Auxetec Limited, who are developing the world’s first synthetic, molecular, auxetic liquid crystal elastomer (LCE). Joining Auxetec as a Polymer Scientist, the main responsibilities of the candidate will be tailoring the auxetic, mechanical, thermal and optical properties of our unique material to build application development and achieve successful commercialisation. You will be involved in formulation development of the monomer solution, and testing and characterisation of the elastomer. Working closely with the other members of the team, the candidate will prepare specific samples to meet client requirements. While most of the time in this role will be lab-based, there will be elements of client interaction required. SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE & EXPERIENCE ESSENTIAL • Hands on experience with acrylate formulation and formulation adjustment / modification to meet market needs, • Strong understanding of chemistries/approaches to tailor the end properties of the polymer, • Knowledge of UV curing technology, • Strong understanding of free radical polymerisation and how to control it, • At least 2-3 years relevant R&D experience in an industry setting, • Knowledge and experience of coating and lamination technologies, • Experience with tensile testing, DSC, FTIR, TGA, DMA DESIRABLE • Liquid crystal knowledge or experience, • Monomer synthesis experience, • Polyurethane, silane/silicone knowledge or experience, • Experience of scale up from lab scale to production line, • Experience of dealing with external stakeholders (suppliers, clients) PERFORMANCE • Self driven, • Enthusiastic, • Ability to work safely, • Good laboratory skills and hands on approach, • Efficient and decisive, • Effective communicator, • Willing to work in a fast-changing setting and think critically about results to change direction accordingly, • Understands that in a small company we all need to be flexible and take on a wide variety of tasks regardless of role or seniority SUMMARY This role with Auxetec is a fantastic opportunity to be part of a pioneering team where your results are recognised and can have a noticeable impact on the company, offering direct contribution towards the development and commercialisation of a revolutionary new class of elastomer that has the potential to improve multiple industries – from automotive architectural glass, composite materials, electronic and engineering materials to the renewable energy sector.
