Group Workshop Manager Location: Kirkby, Merseyside Job Type: Full-Time | Permanent Salary: £60,000 - £70,000 per annum (DOE) Benefits • Company pension, • 28 days annual leave (including Bank Holidays) Working Hours • Monday - Friday: 06:30 - 17:00, • Saturday: 07:00 - 12:00 (subject to business requirements) The Company Our client is a long-established and highly successful business operating within the transport, recycling, waste management and material processing sectors. With continued investment and growth across multiple locations, they operate a large and diverse fleet of specialist vehicles and heavy plant equipment, supporting customers throughout the North West and the Midlands. Their fleet includes: • HGV Tippers, • HGV Grab Wagons, • Specialist Road Sweepers, • Vans and Light Commercial Vehicles, • Loading Shovels & Excavators, • Material Processing Equipment, • Recycling Plant & Wash Plant Machinery The Opportunity Aspion Search are recruiting on behalf of a well-established engineering and transport business for an experienced Group Workshop Manager. This is a senior leadership opportunity responsible for overseeing workshop operations, engineering standards and fleet maintenance across multiple sites. The successful candidate will provide strategic leadership whilst remaining actively involved in the workshop, supporting technicians with complex diagnostics, quality control and technical guidance where required. This is a hands-on leadership role suited to someone who enjoys leading by example and has a strong commercial understanding of workshop operations. Key Responsibilities Workshop Leadership • Lead and develop the engineering and workshop function across multiple locations., • Establish and maintain consistent engineering standards., • Act as the senior technical authority for complex repairs and engineering decisions., • Implement clear reporting structures, responsibilities and accountability., • Promote a culture of professionalism, safety and continuous improvement. Fleet Maintenance & Performance • Oversee planned maintenance programmes and reactive repairs., • Maximise fleet availability whilst reducing vehicle downtime., • Monitor workshop productivity and maintenance performance., • Investigate recurring defects and implement preventative solutions., • Improve maintenance planning and resource allocation., • Provide operational teams with accurate vehicle availability updates. Hands-On Engineering The successful candidate will remain actively involved in workshop activities, including: • Diagnosing complex mechanical, electrical, hydraulic and pneumatic faults., • Supporting technicians with challenging repairs., • Carrying out quality inspections on completed work., • Assisting with breakdowns and urgent repairs when required., • Supporting MOT preparation and preventative maintenance programmes., • Mentoring technicians and apprentices., • Leading by example in relation to workmanship, productivity and Health & Safety. Whilst this is a senior management position, maintaining strong technical involvement is an essential part of the role. Compliance & Engineering Standards • Ensure full compliance with DVSA regulations and Operator's Licence requirements., • Oversee servicing, inspections, brake testing and MOT preparation., • Maintain accurate, audit-ready maintenance records., • Ensure vehicle defects are correctly reported, repaired and signed off., • Work closely with compliance teams to maintain industry best practice., • Support external audits and regulatory inspections. People Management • Lead, motivate and develop workshop technicians and apprentices., • Establish clear expectations and engineering standards., • Identify training needs and succession planning opportunities., • Manage performance professionally and fairly., • Encourage knowledge sharing and continuous improvement across the team. Financial & Supplier Management • Monitor workshop expenditure and labour efficiency., • Manage supplier relationships and subcontracted repairs., • Challenge unnecessary costs and repeat repairs., • Support long-term fleet replacement planning., • Review whole-life vehicle costs to maximise operational efficiency. Workshop Systems • Ensure workshop management systems, including Truckfile, TPMS and other fleet management software, are utilised effectively., • Maintain accurate maintenance records and reporting., • Standardise engineering processes across all workshop locations., • Eliminate undocumented repairs and inconsistent working practices., • Use workshop data to identify trends and improve overall performance. Skills & Experience Required The ideal candidate will have: • Significant experience within HGV, commercial vehicle or specialist fleet engineering., • Previous experience as a Workshop Manager, Engineering Manager, Fleet Engineer or similar leadership role., • Strong hands-on mechanical, electrical and hydraulic diagnostic capability., • Excellent understanding of DVSA regulations and Operator's Licence compliance., • Experience managing preventative maintenance programmes., • Proven leadership and people management experience., • Strong planning, organisational and problem-solving skills., • Commercial awareness with experience managing workshop costs., • A process-driven approach with excellent attention to detail., • The confidence to challenge operational decisions where safety or compliance may be compromised. Desirable Experience • Multi-site workshop management., • Road sweepers, tippers, specialist fleet or heavy plant maintenance.
