Senior Rail Safety Consultant Location: London, Bristol, Manchester or Nottingham (Hybrid) Sector: Rail, Infrastructure, Transportation Job Type: Permanent, Full-Time About the Role We are seeking an experienced Senior Rail Safety Engineer / Safety Risk Consultant to join a growing Safety, Risk & Reliability team delivering high-impact projects across the UK rail industry . This role is ideal for professionals with strong rail safety assurance, risk assessment, and system safety engineering experience , particularly across complex, safety-critical rail systems. You will play a key role in delivering safety engineering solutions across a wide range of rail projects, from conventional systems to digital and emerging technologies. Key Role Responsibilities Lead delivery of rail safety assurance activities , work packages, or small projects to time, cost, and quality. Perform and manage system safety engineering and risk assessment , including: HAZID (Hazard Identification) HAZOP (Hazard and Operability Studies) FMECA (Failure Modes, Effects & Criticality Analysis) FTA (Fault Tree Analysis) Develop and review Safety Cases, Safety Justifications, and Safety Management Systems . Facilitate and chair safety workshops with clients, stakeholders, and multidisciplinary teams. Support projects across the full rail system lifecycle , including design, integration, testing, and operations. Provide safety assurance input for: Signalling & train control systems (ETCS, ERTMS, CBTC, interlockings) Rail infrastructure (track, civils, stations, depots, power systems) Rail communications systems (GSM-R, FRMCS, telecoms networks) Rolling stock and integration Operations, maintenance, and system upgrades Interface with Independent Safety Assessors (ISA) / Assessment Bodies (AsBo) and support responses to findings. Support clients with modern rail challenges , including: Digital railway systems Decarbonisation and sustainability Climate resilience and adaptation About You Chartered Engineer (or working towards) with a relevant professional institution. Proven experience in rail safety engineering / safety assurance within the UK rail sector . Strong knowledge of UK rail regulations and standards , including: ROGS (Railways and Other Guided Transport Systems Regulations) CSM-RA (Common Safety Method for Risk Evaluation and Assessment) NTSNs / TSIs EN 50126, EN 50129, EN 50716 Demonstrated experience delivering quantitative and qualitative risk assessments . Strong background in safety-critical, multidisciplinary rail systems . Experience working with or alongside ISA / AsBo organisations . Ability to work across multiple rail domains (signalling, infrastructure, rolling stock, operations). Strong stakeholder engagement and communication skills. These complementary roles offer genuine technical authority on a major programme where electrical safety, systems integration, and engineering excellence are paramount. You'll be shaping how a transformational project approaches two critical and deeply interconnected disciplines. These aren't routine compliance roles. Your decisions will influence whole life costs, protect public safety, and define systems integration strategy across hundreds of kilometres of complex infrastructure. ROLE 1: Lead Earthing & Bonding Engineer What You'll Be Doing You'll lead the Earthing & Bonding discipline as the recognised technical authority, developing and embedding electrical safety strategies across all project phases. Looking to speak to speak to experienced Signalling and Telecoms (S&T) Supervisor and Construction Manager on a freelance basis to lead on-site activities for upcoming station and line upgrade projects in the UK Role Purpose: As a crucial member of the project team, you will act as the on-site technical authority, supervising and delivering key packages of signalling and telecoms works. You will ensure that all technical, quality, and safety standards (Network Rail standards) are met. Key Responsibilities: * Site Supervision & Leadership: Lead on-site installation, testing, and commissioning activities, mentoring S&T Technicians, Installers, and Apprentices. * Construction Management: Oversee contractors and subcontractors, ensuring compliance with RAMS (Risk Assessments and Method Statements). * S&T Focus: Plan and oversee works involving signaling equipment, points machines, control systems, and lineside fibre networks. * Quality & Assurance: Inspect ongoing work, ensure compliance with design documents, and manage red-line mark-up drawings. * Health & Safety: Maintain the highest safety standards, acting as Person in Charge (PIC/PICOP) when required. * Progress Reporting: Liaise with the Project Manager, providing regular updates on project progress, budget compliance, and schedule. Essential Requirements: * Experience: Proven experience as a Supervisor or Construction Manager within the railway signaling/telecoms sector. * Qualifications: Level 3 electrical qualification or equivalent experience. * Safety Credentials: Valid PTS (Personal Track Safety) card. * Competence: IRSE License (Signalling) or relevant SMTH experience. * Compliance: Deep knowledge of Network Rail standards and procedures. * Skills: Excellent communication, leadership, and problem-solving skills.
