The main duties are as follows: • Undertake administrative tasks to support the fee earners in their work e.g. opening cases, undertaking conflict checks, time recording, and complying with Lexcel requirements for opening, progressing and closing files • Undertake casework as directed by the fee earner, taking all necessary steps to progress cases in consultation with and under supervision by the fee earner • Attend meetings and outreach centres/meetings as and when directed e.g. the Family Justice Centre, Public Law Outline Meetings to give advice (with training), support clients and provide notes of meetings for the fee earner • Undertake casework in injunctions and children act cases including advocacy at court in ex parte and undefended hearings, under the supervision of a fee earner • Work with fee earner and accounts/billing staff to ensure that case files are maintained in good order with relevant information on file such that when the case is finished it is ready for billing and can be passed promptly to relevant accounts staff/costs draftsman. Line Manager Your day-to-day supervisor will be the solicitor/fee earner you work for within the care team and your overall supervisor is the Paralegal Manager. Specific Duties Taking calls and meeting and taking new clients instructions. Applying for public funding for new clients and responding to requests from the Legal Aid Agency in relation to the application to ensure funding is obtained promptly and all queries responded to. Drafting documentation as directed by the fee earner with conduct of the case e.g. letter of instruction to an expert, correspondence to clients, local authority etc. Attending the Family Justice Centre (on a rota with other staff) to provide advice and assistance to users. Progressing Family Law Act 1996 (injunctions) and Children Act 1989 cases on behalf of the fee earner including applying for funding, taking instructions, making court applications, attending some hearings either with counsel or on own as and when trained and at appropriate hearings (e.g. ex parte hearings or undefended). Attending Public Law Outline Meetings and other meetings as directed by your supervisor related to a case or the work of the care team ensuring when appropriate you make notes of decisions and relevant discussion at meetings and undertake follow up work e.g. Time record when you return to the office, feedback to fee earner etc. Drafting statements and correspondence as and when required. Organising meetings between clients and experts and preparing letters of instruction for experts using templates e.g psychiatrists. Attending court with counsel to support the client and make notes. Administrative tasks These include opening files, diarising hearings, time recording, managing fee earner’s diary, undertaking conflict checks and risk assessments when opening file, ensuring invoices for disbursements have correct information on for billing purposes, ensuring that files are in good order with all time recording and attendance notes on system to ensure file can be billed efficiently once the case has finished. Such other duties as and when required by your day-to-day supervising solicitor and the Paralegal Manager. Essential Requirements: 1. Experience of working under pressure in a busy team. 2. Ability to work with clients from a variety of backgrounds many who have complex problems and challenges. 3. Good IT skills to enable you to save, adapt, draft, amend, organise and share documentation in an efficient manner. 4. Experience of working in an office setting Desirable requirements: 1. Experience of working in a legal setting e.g solicitor’s firm, advice centre or similar, whether on a paid or voluntary basis 2. Completion of LPC or equivalent or in the process of completing is desirable. 3. Experience of working in a Care team and/or knowledge of Public Law (Children) 4. Previous paralegal experience in a Family team. 5. Experience of applying for public funding on the CCMS system. 6. Have obtained the LPC or other legal qualification or working towards this.
