A 10% market supplement may be available for exceptional candidates.\n\nAbout the Team\n\nCroydon's Private Sector Housing team works closely with landlords, agents, and tenants to improve property standards and ensure safe, well‑managed homes across the borough's large private rented sector. A key part of our work is ensuring robust fire safety in existing residential buildings.\n\nAbout the Role\n\nAn exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced Senior Fire Safety Surveyor to join Croydon's Private Sector Housing Team. The primary objective of this role is to improve standards within Croydon's private rented sector, including housing association‑owned and privately‑owned homes.\n\nWe are looking for a professional with a strong breadth of experience, particularly in enforcement work using relevant legislation. The successful candidate will play a key leadership role within the team, managing staff and leading inspections of tall residential buildings that may present a wide range of structural and external cladding fire safety issues.\n\nYou will ensure fire safety compliance in high‑rise and mid‑rise residential buildings within the private sector and will be expected to demonstrate strong working knowledge of:\n\nHousing Act 2004\nThe Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 (RRFSO)\nBuilding Safety Act 2022\n\nYou will also contribute to a broad range of fire‑safety‑related projects, including reviewing BS Standards, PAS guidance documents, and the structure and design features of private rented buildings to ensure compliance with evolving regulations.\n\nWorking closely with partners such as the London Fire Brigade, Building Safety Regulator, Greater London Authority, MHCLG, and internal Council teams, you will help prioritise enforcement actions and oversee the remediation of non‑compliant buildings.\n\nReporting to the Private Sector Housing Manager within the Sustainable Communities, Regeneration and Economic Directorate, you will act as a technical expert and lead a small fire safety team within the Council's wider Private Sector Housing Division.\n\nKey Responsibilities\n\nIn this senior role, you will:\n\nLead inspections and fire safety assessments of tall buildings, including those with complex structural and cladding‑related risks.\nManage and mentor members of the fire safety team.\nUndertake enforcement activities using a range of legislative powers, ensuring robust and proportionate regulatory action.\nInvestigate fire safety complaints and carry out detailed inspections of private sector dwellings, including HMOs.\nPrepare and progress enforcement measures such as schedules, notices, orders, civil penalties, works in default, prosecutions, rent repayment orders, and banning orders.\nDrive proactive project work and contribute to the administration of property licensing schemes.\nLead on the preparation of legal bundles and compliance cases relating to building safety failures.\nProvide subject‑matter leadership within at least one specialist area of private sector housing or public health. \n\nWhy Join Us?\n\nThis is a unique opportunity for a dedicated fire safety professional to make a significant and lasting impact on the safety and wellbeing of residents in Croydon.
