The Heavy Diesel Truck Mechanic is responsible for the diagnosis, repair, and preventive maintenance of the company's heavy-duty truck and trailer fleet. Working in the shop and in the field, this role keeps equipment safe, roadworthy, and available by accurately troubleshooting and repairing trucks and heavy-haul trailers and completing work correctly and on schedule to support the division's availability and downtime targets. The ideal candidate is an experienced diesel technician with deep expertise across Peterbilt, Kenworth, and Western Star trucks and heavy-haul trailer equipment. Responsibilities • Diagnose, troubleshoot, and repair heavy-duty diesel trucks including Peterbilt, Kenworth, and Western Star, covering engines, drivetrains, brakes, electrical, HVAC, hydraulic, and after-treatment systems., • Troubleshoot and repair heavy-haul trailers, including detachable gooseneck (RGN) lowboys, low-boy trailers, Landoll traveling-axle trailers, and roll-back / rollback equipment., • Perform scheduled preventive maintenance to maximize equipment availability and keep fleet downtime below the division benchmark., • Operate truck and engine manufacturer diagnostic software — such as PACCAR ESA and Davie4 (Peterbilt/Kenworth), Detroit DiagnosticLink (Western Star/Daimler), and Cummins INSITE — to pull fault codes, run guided diagnostics, perform calibrations and parameter programming, and verify repairs., • Interpret diagnostic software output alongside wiring diagrams and OEM service manuals to accurately identify root causes and avoid repeat repairs., • Maintain current knowledge of OEM diagnostic tools, software updates, and after-treatment/emissions systems as fleet makes and models evolve., • Ensure DOT and FMCSA compliance on all inspections, repairs, and documentation; verify units are roadworthy before release., • Maintain accurate, timely records in the work order and maintenance management system, including labor, parts, and cause/correction detail., • Coordinate with dispatch and operations to prioritize repairs, minimize disruption, and communicate realistic completion timelines., • Manage parts needs in coordination with the parts/procurement function to control cost and reduce wait time., • Enforce a clean, safe, and organized shop environment and ensure adherence to all safety policies and PPE requirements., • Respond to and coordinate road-service or field repair calls as needed. Requirements • 5+ years of hands-on heavy-duty diesel truck repair experience., • Proven troubleshooting and repair experience on Peterbilt, Kenworth, and Western Star trucks., • Demonstrated experience troubleshooting and repairing heavy-haul trailers: detachable gooseneck lowboys, low-boys, Landolls, and roll-backs., • Strong knowledge of diesel engines, drivetrains, hydraulics, air and electrical systems, and modern diagnostic tools/software., • Ability to read schematics, wiring diagrams, and OEM technical documentation., • Valid driver's license; CDL Class A strongly preferred., • Own set of hand tools appropriate to the trade., • Working knowledge of DOT/FMCSA regulations and inspection standards., • High school diploma or equivalent., • ASE Master Medium/Heavy Truck certification or equivalent OEM certifications., • Experience in a construction, heavy civil, or equipment-intensive fleet environment., • Experience with fleet maintenance/work order management software., • Welding and fabrication skills.
