Job DescriptionDescription: The Stroum Jewish Community Center (SJCC) is seeking an energetic, service-oriented Fitness Manager to lead the daily operations of our Fitness Center and sports facilities. This role oversees the weight and cardio floor, gymnasium, racquetball court, boxing room, and dedicated stretching and spin studio, as well as SJCC’s personal training program and adult and youth recreational sports leagues. The Fitness Manager plays a central role in creating a welcoming, safe, and engaging fitness environment while developing programs that promote health, connection, and community. As a community center, SJCC is not simply trying to replicate the experience of a large commercial gym. We value personal relationships, thoughtful programming, and outstanding member experiences that make people feel welcomed, supported, and excited to return. This position requires a hands-on leader who is passionate about fitness, committed to excellent customer service, and comfortable working with members of all ages—from young children to active older adults. This is a full-time, in-person role that includes some evening and weekend hours. Compensation for the position is $70,000 to $85,000 annually Facility & Operations Management • Oversee the daily operations of the SJCC Fitness Center, including weight training and cardio areas., • Manage usage and operations of multiple activity spaces including the main gymnasium, racquetball court, boxing room, and stretching/spin studio., • Maintain the Fitness Desk, ensuring it serves as a welcoming hub for member service, information, daily challenges, prizes, and occasional refreshments., • Ensure all fitness spaces remain safe, clean, organized, and well maintained., • Coordinate maintenance, repair, and upkeep of fitness and cardio equipment, working with vendors as needed., • Mechanical aptitude and comfort with basic equipment troubleshooting and adjustments is strongly valued., • Supervise and support Fitness Center Attendants, ensuring all shifts are staffed from opening through closing., • Train staff on member service expectations, safety procedures, and facility operations., • Foster a positive team environment that emphasizes helpfulness, visibility, and proactive support for members., • Oversee the SJCC personal training program, including coordination and support of personal trainers working in the facility., • Help grow the personal training business through member engagement, referrals, and program development., • Develop and implement creative fitness and wellness programs designed to engage members, support health goals, and strengthen community., • Oversee adult and youth sports leagues including basketball, softball, soccer, and other seasonal programs., • Partner with staff across departments to develop programs that attract and retain members., • Serve as a visible, approachable presence on the fitness floor, assisting members and guests with equipment, questions, and service requests., • Create an atmosphere that is welcoming to all ages, abilities, and backgrounds., • During the summer season, coordinate and support SJCC Day Camp operations, which brings hundreds of active children to the facility each day., • Maintain accurate traffic counts and usage data to support planning and space management., • Ensure all emergency procedures and safety protocols are clearly communicated and followed., • Support incident reporting and risk management procedures. Requirements: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Education/Experience: • Personal training certification or related fitness credentials, • Experience managing personal training programs or sports leagues, • CPR/AED and First Aid certification (or willingness to obtain) Additional Skills • Passion for fitness, wellness, and community engagement, • Strong interpersonal skills with a friendly, energetic, and service-focused demeanor, • Ability to work effectively with members of all ages, including seniors, families, and youth, • Experience supervising staff or leading teams in a fitness, recreation, or community environment, • Strong organizational and operational management skills, • Comfort working both hands-on in the facility and strategically on programming and growth, • Familiarity with fitness equipment and safety procedures, • Mechanical aptitude helpful for basic fitness equipment troubleshooting Computer Skills Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from internal and external customers. Ability to speak effectively one on one or before small groups of customers or employees of organization. Physical Demands: While performing the duties of this position, the employee is regularly required to stand, walk, bend, reach, and demonstrate physical movements associated with group fitness instruction. The employee must be able to provide verbal cues and hear participant communications in a dynamic, active environment. The role requires the ability to lift, move, and set up fitness equipment weighing up to 25 pounds regularly, and up to 50 pounds occasionally. Specific vision abilities include the ability to observe participant Environmental Conditions: The work is typically performed in a community center environment or office environment, with a moderate to loud noise level. Occasional travel to other areas of the facility may be required, where the noise level is moderate to loud and environmental conditions may include slippery surfaces, crowded areas, or working near moving parts (e.g. exercise equipment).
