Job Description Job Title: Utility Inspector Job Description The Utility Inspector performs field-based inspections of utility poles to identify corrosion or damage, document findings, and support regulatory compliance activities. This role requires extensive walking in all weather conditions, frequent travel within the assigned utility territory, and consistent interaction with operations teams, technical services, and external stakeholders. The position is ideal for someone who is professional, customer service oriented, and comfortable working independently in the field while maintaining high standards of safety, accuracy, and documentation. Responsibilities • Perform periodic inspections and surveys on utility poles at ground level to identify corrosion, damage, or other issues., • Document all inspection findings clearly and accurately in compliance with regulatory and internal requirements., • Complete all required paperwork and electronic forms using the provided field binder and handheld tablet., • Support the successful completion of regulatory audits and inspections by providing accurate records and inspection data., • Perform audit reviews with operations teams and support them during regulatory audits., • Communicate inspection results and field observations to supervisors and relevant stakeholders in a clear and timely manner., • Interface professionally with technical services, government agencies, emergency planning committees, emergency responders, landowners, contractors, and other external parties as needed., • Follow established safety procedures and company policies at all times while working in the field., • Adhere to a set classroom training schedule, actively participate in training sessions, and complete all required practice exams and homework outside of class time., • Demonstrate competency in conducting inspections using the tools and procedures provided during training., • Maintain regular communication with supervisors regarding attendance, sick time, and daily work status., • Use personal vehicle to travel to and from multiple job sites within the assigned utility territory, and use company vehicles when requested and authorized., • Retrieve daily route assignments via tablet, review assigned addresses/sites, and plan an efficient route to complete all inspections., • Work independently throughout the day in the field, managing time and tasks to ensure all assigned inspections are completed., • Care for and properly use company-provided equipment, including tools, safety gear, and electronic devices., • Valid state driver’s license., • Ownership of a reliable vehicle or sedan suitable for traveling to and from multiple sites., • Minimum of 6 months of experience in the utility field or utility industry., • At least 1 year of driving experience., • Ability to walk for an 8-hour workday in all weather conditions., • Professional demeanor with strong customer service orientation., • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to speak clearly and explain work being performed., • Basic to intermediate proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Excel, and Outlook., • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage documentation and daily routes effectively., • Ability to work both independently with minimal supervision and collaboratively within a team setting., • Comfort interacting with technical services, government agencies, emergency planning committees, emergency responders, landowners, and contractors., • Capability to complete detailed inspections using provided tools and follow set procedures., • Experience in the utility industry, utility construction, or related utility fieldwork., • Experience as an inspection technician or in a similar field-based inspection role., • Strong interpersonal skills and initiative, with the ability to take ownership of tasks and follow through., • Ability to remain focused and attentive during training and classroom sessions., • Comfort using handheld tablets and digital tools for route management and data entry., • Willingness to complete practice exams and homework outside of standard training hours to build competency., • Readiness to undergo OSHA and safety-oriented training and follow company handbook guidelines. Work Environment This is a 100% field-based position within a defined utility service territory, with frequent travel between multiple sites each day. Standard operating hours are Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., with occasional Saturday shifts available at the supervisor’s request and at the contractor’s discretion. The role requires working outdoors in all weather conditions and extensive walking throughout the day. You will report directly to the job site each day using your own vehicle and receive your daily route and site list via a handheld tablet. The company provides a simple tool set, field binder for paperwork, ID badges, tools and tool belt, safety vest, hard hat, and a handheld tablet. Training includes OSHA and orientation sessions, review of the company handbook, scenario-based learning, practice exams, and homework that must be completed on your own time. Performance and competency are evaluated based on your ability to complete inspections using the tools and processes taught; successful completion leads to independent field work, while additional training or separation may occur if standards are not met. Communication with supervisors regarding attendance, scheduling, and work status is expected, and all work is performed following established safety guidelines and procedures. Job Type & Location This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Buffalo, NY. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $20.00 - $20.00/hr.
