The Director of Operations Fellow is a full-time position that prepares you to become a Director of Operations (DOO) of an Uncommon school. As DOO, you will lead a school in partnership with the Principal, working together to ensure your students receive an exemplary education. The DOO Fellowship is based on a foundation of four core elements that are aligned to the competencies of Uncommon leaders. Each element is designed to build Fellows’ capacity towards becoming effective DOOs. These include Professional Development, Experiential Learning, Practical Application and Reflective Practice. The DOO Fellowship typically lasts one year; however, the length of time will vary based on open positions and DOO Fellow readiness. Fellows should expect to work in multiple locations and gradespans within the region. Fellow placement is based on the region’s needs as well as Fellows’ growth areas and matching them with host DOOs to best support their development. Professional Development All Fellows will attend a series of professional development workshops throughout the Fellowship. The subject matter of these workshops is grounded in the leadership competencies that DOOs are evaluated and developed on. Experiential Learning Feedback and coaching, especially when individualized, are critical tools that will support the Fellow’s growth as a leader. Fellows will engage in experiential learning activities, and receive feedback targeted at their individualized areas of growth. Experiential learning activities include: submission of weekly deliverables; on-site coaching with real-time feedback; and practice clinics where fellows will engage in case studies, role plays, and problem solving exercises. Practical Application Fellows are placed at an existing Uncommon school and serve as full-time members of the school's operations team. They engage in operations work at their host school, tackle school or regional-based operations projects, and conduct observations and analysis of operational systems. Fellows are responsible for completing a variety of pre-determined deliverables that expose them to all of the key components of DOO work. Practical application includes an Immersion in which the Fellow acts as DOO in place of their host DOO for 4-6 weeks. During this time, their host DOO is offsite and the Fellow is acting DOO and co-leads the school alongside the Principal. Reflective Discourse The Fellowship will create space at in-person sessions for reflective discourse, so that Fellows can learn from their own experiences and those of others in the cohort. Fellows will also be supported in developing a reflective practice, where they will codify their learning through written reflections and create plans to make their growth and development actionable. Job Description Uncommon Schools is seeking a Senior HVAC Technician (Snr HVAC Tech) to join the charter network’s New Jersey Facilities team. This position provides an opportunity for an experienced HVAC technician with at least seven (7) years' relevant experience to work with a dedicated facilities group, deepen his/her technical skills, and help ensure that Uncommon provides well-maintained, comfortable, and safe educational facilities for our students and staff. Uncommon’s portfolio in New Jersey comprises buildings constructed from the very early 1900s through the early 2020s, operating HVAC systems dating from 1966 to the recent past few years. As ambient comfort is essential to a productive learning and teaching environment, the impact of this individual’s attentiveness will be felt and deeply appreciated across the region. Reporting to the Senior Manager, Facilities Management Team, the HVAC Service Technician will perform all technical work necessary to inspect, maintain, repair, and modify HVAC system in our buildings. With expertise in HVAC – and to a lesser extent in construction and plumbing – in multi-family, schools, and commercial buildings, the successful candidate will be responsible for conducting minor HVAC projects and managing larger ones and ensuring they are completed on time and within budget. The HVAC Service Tech will partner with senior Facilities team members and outside consultants on the planning, coordination, and supervision of mechanical construction and repair activities implemented by outside vendors, will ensure project timelines are met and ensure quality control standards are followed, mentor junior staff, and handle all HVAC-related communication with stakeholders. Position Title: Project Manager Location: Boston, MA or various U.S. project locations Reports To: Project Executive or Area Manager Position Overview The Project Manager is responsible for leading and overseeing assigned construction projects from initiation through completion. This role ensures adherence to safety standards, contractual obligations, design requirements, budget limitations, and project timelines. The position involves coordinating planning, organizing resources, and staffing critical roles in collaboration with senior leadership. The Project Manager reports directly to the Project Executive or Area Manager. Core Responsibilities Project Leadership & Delivery • Direct all phases of project execution, from preconstruction planning to final closeout., • Coordinate with executive and operations teams to assign and manage key field personnel., • Define project goals, procedures, and performance expectations in alignment with company policies., • Oversee daily construction operations to ensure alignment with project scope, schedule, budget, and quality requirements., • Proactively identify potential risks and implement solutions to address issues related to cost, schedule, or safety. Contracts, Procurement & Stakeholder Relations • Support contract negotiations and oversee the selection and management of subcontractors and vendors., • Maintain strong communication with clients, consultants, partners, and other stakeholders to support efficient project progress., • Act as the company representative in meetings, labor discussions, and other key engagements., • Manage documentation such as change orders, extra work requests, back charges, and other contractual submissions. Planning, Scheduling & Financial Oversight • Lead preconstruction planning efforts, including sequencing, site logistics, temporary works, and schedule development., • Monitor project financials, including budgets, cost tracking, forecasting, and cash flow., • Supervise scheduling, engineering coordination, material management, and administrative functions., • Track productivity, quantities, and workmanship to ensure project performance meets expectations. Safety, Quality & Compliance • Ensure adherence to company EHS policies as well as all applicable regulatory requirements., • Foster a strong safety-focused culture across all project activities., • Oversee quality control processes and implement corrective measures when necessary. Additional Responsibilities • Carry out other duties as assigned by the Project Executive or supervisor. Qualifications & Experience • Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering or a related field., • Minimum of 5–6 years of experience managing projects in deep foundations or heavy civil construction., • OSHA 30-hour Construction Safety Certification and First Aid/CPR training required., • Strong expertise in project scheduling, cost control, and team leadership across multiple disciplines., • In-depth knowledge of construction methods, industry standards, and best practices for complex civil projects., • Proven ability to apply effective management strategies to optimize team performance.
