The opportunity Under technical direction and within delegated underwriting authority reviews moderate and complex risks to determine acceptance of an application. Determines selection or rejection of new and/or renewal business using underwriting rules and guidelines, manual rating rules and insurance laws and regulations. Analyzes quality and quantity of risks written and prepares reports and recommendations accordingly. With guidance, develops producer relationships, monitors and evaluates results of producers and business segments. Recommends, develops and implements action plans for business development, improvement of underwriting quality and results. Act as coach and mentor for newer or less-experienced members of the team, taking active participation role in the leadership and development of the team. Some of the responsibilities include but are not limited to: • Contribute to the management of a profitable and sustainable book of surety business by evaluating detailed qualitative and quantitative client, industry and information. Conducting portfolio reviews for assigned accounts and individual producers. Develop integrated pictures of factors that affect performance of individual companies in specific sectors and markets, with a focus on driving underwriting profitability, growth, retention in the surety portfolio. Make case specific and portfolio recommendations, implements, and monitoring action as necessary. Regularly disseminates market, industry, sector and underwriting developments to the team, and internal stakeholders when required. Act as deputy for the team leadership when required., • Has responsibility for the development and monitoring of the surety book of business. Examines, identifies, and evaluates exposures by analyzing documentation from all available sources. Makes underwriting decisions and recommendations to accept, decline, or modify the acceptance terms of risks within underwriting authority and guidelines and in collaborative partnership with the underwriting team when appropriate. Develops and executes underwriting strategy, including portfolio management and self-audits. Takes action on underwriting decisions in compliance underwriting guidelines, company guidelines and local legal and regulatory frameworks., • Develops superior working relationships with producers, and with internal and external partners, to successfully promote achievement of mutual operating goals (growth, retention and profitability) and to supply the appropriate products and services. Determines and executes strategy for account management and producer management., • Ensure exceptional high standard of process management of underwriting decisions, document management, accuracy of recorded data and reports via automated desktop systems and tools., • Gathers and analyzes competitor and producer information to help enrich business development strategies and underwriting stance., • Collaborates with team members to manage work inventories and all production activities in order to provide accurate and exceptional timely service to clients and producers in accordance with business unit standards., • Regularly engage with market producers, travels to key producers/accounts, engage and participate in relevant industry or market events, represent Surety at internal cross departmental meetings/events., • Stays abreast of industry, market, economic, legal and business trends. Decision-Making Authority/Accountability Level • Has underwriting authority in line with authority matrix and experience to accept, decline, and modify risk acceptance terms that enable the establishment of a surety facility and issuance of bonds. The expertise you bring • Possesses demonstrated track record in technical knowledge, understanding and skill in surety or related financial services industries. Must be able to identify and describe the major insolvency risk factors to a surety prospect together with a strong understanding of the perils and trigger events presented under a proposed bond product. Must be able to identify and describe the credit status, bond exposures and risks considered in making an underwriting decision. Must know how to obtain information needed to make an underwriting decision, and be able to continuously develop a deep understanding of surety risk assessment., • Must have proven analytical, decision making, problem-solving, communication, presentation, listening and organizational skills. Must be able to work both independently and as a highly collaborative member of a team. Must be able to analyse market trends and contribute to development of underwriting best practices, strategic direction and business development., • Education and Experience Preferred: Bachelor’s degree or equivalent preferred. 3-5 years of underwriting experience, within complex specialty line of business, or relevant financial institution related experience.
