We are hiring for a Waking night and day shift support worker / carer to join the lovely team around a 19 year young man who has epilepsy and PMLD, is non verbal and has additional health needs. He lives at home with his family and dog. We will need someone to take on both daytime hours as well as cover regular 2 waking night shifts per week. This is full time position (37.5 hours or more per week) for someone who has a strong interest in working with disabled and autistic people. You would ideally need some experience but the correct applicant we are also happy to train. Please let us know in your own words why you are interested or what experience you have. We need to cover the following waking nights: Sunday and Monday or Thursday and Friday. We would expect the new support worker also to take on occasional extra shifts when colleagues are away. The night supports are strictly waking nights. This is quite an active position - you would need to be really fit and strong and ideally not be too petite either as you would be working with a still growing teenager with a movement disorder. We would prefer someone who can work with a UTR number on a self-employed basis. But if you needed a PAYE because of Visa requirements we can connect you to a care agency who will employ the correct candidate for us. This is not a second job possibility (we would like to find someone who takes on this position as their only job). Training is mostly 2 months of shadowing. Probation is a minimum of 6 months. After probation the rate increases to £17 with a UTR number (PAYE is £15 through the agency). Starting Date: for training Asap. Availability needed also for bank holidays (paid at double rate). Importantly we need to find someone who can also support during some of the Christmas period and Easter. Ideally you live in North London or can easily commute. You would often work together with other team members to engage the young person in every day activities and to take him out into the community. But you would also need to often take on sole charge after training. About the young person He is a very friendly and active autistic young man / teenager. He is non verbal. He can walk short distances but only with a lot of support, otherwise he is in a wheelchair. He likes to go to the park, shopping, cafe and sometimes some planned activities all with a lot of support. He likes the swimming pool and special needs bike rides. His communication is mainly through pictures of reference and is taught with ABA principles. We will train you in behaviour therapy and would expect you to follow our training. There are regular team meetings and you would attend those meetings. He sometimes is also tired and unwell after a seizure or other illness and will then just need care and nurturing and patience. He also sometimes has hospital stays which requires a lot of patience. He needs a lot of physical support. He lives with his family and also a dog. About you You would need to be able to appreciate a person who has profound autism and treat him with dignity and kindness. You would be someone who has interest in special needs, psychology and perhaps nursing. You would perhaps have studied a related field or are planning to study a related field. This position is very different from working in a care home. You would be assisting him with everyday skills and activities as well as feeding, bathing and toileting. If you have experience with intermittent catheterisation, Peresteen as well as PEG feeding then that is an advantage but we can easily also train those skills too. (Please research all terms you are unsure about before you apply). When working a waking overnight shift you will need to make sure that he is safe and alert parents in case of a seizure. Before and after a waking night you need to be able to rest. During the day you need to engage hime both at home and in the community. This position also involves keeping his environment generally tidy and clean and help with his laundry. You should be responsible, cheerful, honest and very reliable, physically strong and healthy as he needs a lot of support. You will be trained by members of the team and the education consultant and be taught the principles of ABA - a behaviour therapy. You would need to be flexible and sometime cover for other people in the team if they are away on holidays or ill. You should Be able to commit for minimum a year. Good written and spoken English is a must as you often would have to communicate with health professionals and write reports after each shift. All training is during the day first through shadowing. About you: This position will suit someone who ideally has already worked with autistic and disabled adults and has already experience. But it is very different from working in a care home. We would be able to train you in personal care, intermittent catheterisation, medication administration, peristeen (TAI) and positive behaviour support and other essential skills - if you are a suitable candidate. His environment will need to be kept clean and tidy (it is not a cleaner position but to ensure that his environment stays tidy, safe and fit for purpose). You will help with his laundry too. It would also involve sometimes to accompany on short holidays (in the UK) and cover at Christmas. We would prefer someone to work on a self-employed basis with a UTR number (not cash in hand). It is exactly 26 hours minimum per week. We hope to find someone who has specific interest in special needs. It is not a summer job but we hope to find someone to commit for a minimum of 12months. That's why we would prefer someone who has studied a health related subject or will study a related subject eg Psychology, nursing or similar. This isnt another care job... 1:1 Support — Complex Behaviour & Mobility Needs About the role Links Support Solutions is looking for a compassionate, confident and physically capable Support Worker to provide dedicated 1:1 support to a gentleman in his 30s with Down syndrome who lives at home with his family and attends our day service full-time. He is a genuinely warm, affectionate and engaging individual who loves being around people. He thrives on positive relationships, enjoys spending time with his friends and forms strong bonds with trusted support staff. Music is a huge part of his day, with Bruno Mars being a particular favourite. He has a fantastic sense of humour and a mischievous personality, often enjoying playful interactions with those around him. He can keep you on your toes and brings plenty of laughter to those who know him well. He has limited verbal communication but understands far more than he is able to express. He is able to use some Makaton signing, although he can sometimes be reluctant to do so, so the successful candidate will need patience, excellent communication skills and the ability to encourage interaction in a calm, positive and consistent way. Like many people with communication difficulties, he can sometimes become frustrated when he is unable to express his needs, wishes or feelings. On occasions, this frustration may present as behaviours of concern, including physical aggression. These behaviours are not reflective of his true personality but are his way of communicating that something is wrong or that he needs support. With patience, consistency, positive behaviour support and the right relationship, he responds extremely well and is able to build strong, trusting connections. Due to his weight, he requires some support when walking longer distances and benefits from encouragement to remain active and engaged in healthy routines. The role includes supporting him to access the community, participate in meaningful activities, enjoy social opportunities and maintain an active lifestyle in a safe and enjoyable way. We are looking for someone who is calm under pressure, resilient, reliable and physically capable. The successful candidate will be confident in setting clear and consistent boundaries while providing compassionate, person-centred support that promotes independence, dignity and wellbeing. Key responsibilities • Maintaining accurate daily records, including health records, • Carrying out weekly weigh-ins and tracking progress, • Supporting and maintaining his personal fitness programme, • Liaising with the Learning Disability Health Team as part of his wider care Essential requirements • Physically strong and confident, providing hands-on support, including with mobility, • Assertive, confident, and self-assured when working with vulnerable adults, • Proven, hands-on experience managing and positively changing challenging behaviour, • Skilled and sensitive in managing food-related behaviours firmly but kindly, • Patient and consistent — able to hold boundaries with a stubborn service user without conflict escalating, • Warm and friendly, with a patient, easy-going manner, he can genuinely bond with and trust Desirable • Experience supporting adults with Down syndrome or learning disabilities specifically, • Experience with weight management or mobility support strategies About Links Links Support Solutions has been delivering supported living, day services, respite care, and outreach support across East London and Essex for over 14 years, specialising in adults with learning disabilities, autism, and complex needs.
