Our outdoor PV technology has state-of-the-art performance and provides electrical power for micro-satellites and UAVs Lightricity is seeking a Automation / Robotics Engineer to develop systems and processes for the automated assembly of high-efficiency solar cells into solar cell assemblies. The successful candidate will play a key role in scaling up manufacturing utilising robotic equipment and automation of assembly tools. This role involves hands-on work in our laboratories to deliver automated hardware and software systems ready for use in manufacturing. The successful candidate should enjoy hands-on activities and have a relevant engineering degree. Responsibilities: • Integrate and program new robotic systems for pick-and-place, lay-down and other assembly operations, • Develop automated processes and tools for the interconnection and packaging of high-efficiency solar cells, • Develop custom software to interface with and control assembly equipment and motion stages, • Design and implement automated test sequences for quality control and performance verification, • Design and fabricate mechanical fixtures and jigs using CAD and 3D printing to support assembly and testing, • Contribute to the company’s R&D projects, • Write technical documentation, process specifications and test reports Required skills/experience: • Degree in robotics, mechatronics, mechanical or manufacturing engineering; or a related discipline, • Experience with automated assembly equipment (e.g. robotic arms), • Strong programming skills (e.g. Python) for hardware control and automation, • Proficiency in CAD software (e.g. SolidWorks) and mechanical design, • Hands-on experience in a workshop, manufacturing or laboratory environment, • Ability to work under own initiative and manage workload to meet tight project deadlines, • Eligible to work in the UK Desirable skills/experience: • Experience with industrial automation software and control systems, • Experience developing GUIs for equipment control or manufacturing dashboards, • Knowledge of machine vision systems for automated inspection, • Knowledge of electronic component and solar cell assembly techniques, • Hands-on experience in welding and/or soldering techniques, • Familiarity with space industry standards or Assembly, Integration and Test (AIT) principles Benefits: • Competitive salary, • Workplace pension, • Access to tennis court and table tennis on-site, • On-site facilities (kitchen, changing rooms, showers), • Great location in the Oxford Science Park

The role encompasses the development, fabrication and characterisation of high-efficiency devices for indoor & outdoor IoT environments and for aerospace applications. This role involves hands-on device processing, optimising device performance and characterisation in our laboratories. The successful candidate should enjoy hands-on activities and have a relevant science or engineering degree. INITION has developed a patented technology that changes how battery electrodes are made. You will take our proprietary production system through its next critical engineering phase-solving complex technical challenges and scaling it to full commercial readiness. This is not a role where you inherit someone else's roadmap. You will own it. You will define the engineering programme, solve the hard problems, and build the team around you. You will be the founding Head of Mechanical Engineering for a capability that does not yet exist anywhere in the world at commercial scale. The Role This is a builder-leader role for a senior engineer who has developed separate production systems to their full potential and integrated them into a single, functional production machine. You will maintain a full vision of the system architecture while developing each subsystem - technically authoritative, hands-on where it counts, and simultaneously founding the engineering team that takes the technology to full commercial readiness. Key Responsibilities • Take full technical ownership of delivering INITION's first pilot proprietary 3D electrode production system, • Take technical ownership of INITION's separate production systems, improving each to the level required and integrating them into a single, functional prototype electrode production machine, • Define and drive the engineering roadmap from current development stage through to a robust, commercially viable production system, • Apply rigorous engineering discipline across mechanical design, process control, automation, and systems integration Building the Engineering Team, Founding Responsibility • Define INITION's production engineering function from the ground up: structure, roles, tools, standards, and culture with the founders, • Recruit and onboard hands-on engineers capable of working at the frontier of a novel production technology, • Establish the engineering processes and documentation practices that will scale with the company through each commercialisation phase, • Be the kind of technical leader that exceptional engineers want to follow - credible, hands-on, and invested in their growth Materials & Process Integration • Work at the interface of mechanical engineering and materials science - understanding how production process decisions affect electrode structure and performance, • Collaborate with the electrochemistry team to ensure the production system consistently delivers against performance targets, • Ensure machine development and materials science advance in lockstep IP & Technical Governance • Protect and strengthen INITION's patent position throughout the engineering development process — the production system is the IP, • Work with IP counsel to ensure all engineering decisions reinforce the company's proprietary position, • Maintain rigorous technical documentation to support investor due diligence and future commercial discussions What We're Looking For Essential • 10 years of experience demonstrable to take this position., • Proven track record of improving separate production systems and integrating them into a single, functional special purpose machine - you have done both the subsystem development and the whole-system integration work, • Strong engineering foundation across machine design, process control, automation, and systems integration, • Experience building or leading an engineering team, ideally in a startup, scale-up, or advanced manufacturing environment, • Hands-on and technically authoritative Sufficient understanding of materials processing to work at the interface of machine development, performance and production output, • Rigorous approach to engineering documentation, IP, and technical governance You May Come From We are not looking for a specific industry background. Job description Preferably from chemistry/material science/chemical engineering background with further education and some business experience, the candidate will ideally be based in Oxford working with world leaders in their field. The role will consider the circular economy of metal used in all applications. Understanding the substitutability and critical applications of the metal will be key, as will regional developments and changing legislation affecting the use of these metals. Often the work will require updating and building Excel-based models to monitor and forecast use of PGM in health, chemical, industrial and high-tech applications. In addition, activities will include conducting extensive research, writing concise summaries backed up by detailed analysis, putting together impactful PowerPoint slides and attending and presenting at industry conferences. The projects vary from direct consulting across the industry value chain including mining, recycling, chemical, industrial fabricators, to financial institutions, to regular reporting on the metal markets. More than 90% of SFAs clients reside overseas. Examples of the types of consulting projects undertaken • Country specific evaluation of PGM used in critical industrial applications aiding business development for major chemical companies., • Worldwide recycling and reuse of PGM for fabricator companies., • Projecting the use of hydrogen and the critical role of PGM. Skills required • Bachelor’s Degree at grade 2:1 or above in chemistry/materials science/chemical engineering, • MSc or PhD in a related discipline an advantage, • Curiosity, attention to detail and accuracy are essential, • Willingness to travel, present your findings and engage with industry, • The candidate should have excellent MS Office skills, particularly Excel, • Excellent writing skills are essential, • The ability to graphically represent analysis is key, • On many occasions, the ability to work under pressure and meet client deadlines, • The ability to work well with others and to maintain databases and put together reports independently, • Fluent in English and permission to work in the UK essential.
