Robotics Software Engineer (Toolpath Planning / Robotics / Manufacturing OS) Location: Sheffield (on-site with flexibility) Competitive salary We’re building ANVIL OS, a software-defined control layer for large-scale metal additive manufacturing (WAAM / wire DED). The goal is to turn industrial robots into programmable, repeatable “digital forges” capable of producing aerospace- and defence-grade parts with full traceability and control. This role is not incremental. You will build the core foundations of our system, specifically toolpath planning, process control, and machine integration, working directly with robotics, welding systems, and real-world production constraints. What you’ll work on • Develop toolpath planning and slicing for large-format metal deposition (multi-axis, non-planar), • Build the first generation of ANVIL OS: from CAD input → toolpath → execution, • Integrate with ABB robots (RobotStudio), expanding to KUKA and FANUC, • Interface with Fronius welding power sources, • Develop control logic for deposition parameters (wire feed, travel speed, heat input), • Contribute to a system that captures and structures process data for traceability and qualification, • Work closely with hardware engineers, operators, and real machines, not simulations alone What we’re looking for • Strong software engineering background (Python, C++, Rust, or similar), • Experience in at least one of:, • Toolpath planning / slicing (CAM, additive or CNC), • Robotics / motion planning, • Computational geometry, • Simulation or physics-based systems, • Comfortable working close to hardware (robots, industrial systems, real-world constraints), • Ability to build from first principles, not just extend existing frameworks, • Bias toward execution and shipping early systems Highly valuable (but not required) • Experience with ABB RobotStudio or other industrial robot environments, • G-code / CAM / CNC machining knowledge, • Additive manufacturing or welding process understanding, • Real-time systems or control systems experience Why this role matters Most of metal manufacturing still runs on analogue processes with limited control and poor repeatability. The blocker is not hardware, it’s software and process control. ANVIL OS is designed to solve that. This role is about building the layer that makes metal production programmable, repeatable, and scalable. This is a high-agency role, we are a startup and we move fast. Experience matters, but attitiude will define the success of this role. Company context • Deep technical team with WAAM and materials expertise (ex-Cranfield, aerospace, defence and space backgrounds), • Existing robotic cells and active development in Sheffield, • Focus on high-value applications in aerospace, defence, space and energy, • Backed by early investors and actively scaling Perks • Competitive salary, • Private Health, • Company stock options (EMI Scheme), • Monthly social events including Go-karting, • Building things that will go into Space If you’re interested in building a new category at the intersection of software, robotics, and advanced manufacturing, get in touch or apply directly.
