Job Description Job Summary We are seeking a skilled and safety-oriented Fiber Optic & Traffic Signal Technician to join our team. This multi-disciplinary role involves the installation, maintenance, repair, and troubleshooting of traffic signal systems, intelligent transportation systems (ITS) infrastructure, and associated low voltage electrical and fiber optic networks. The ideal candidate is proficient in fusion splicing fiber optic cables, building and maintaining traffic signals, and performing low voltage electrical work to support safe and efficient transportation networks. Key Responsibilities • Install, splice, terminate, test, and troubleshoot fiber optic cables (single-mode and multi-mode) using fusion splicers, OTDRs, power meters/light sources, and other specialized test equipment., • Perform mid-sheath splices, ribbon/loose tube fiber handling, cable preparation, and enclosure placement in outdoor plant environments (aerial, underground, and direct-buried applications)., • Install, maintain, repair, and upgrade traffic signal systems, including poles, mast arms, signal heads, LED modules, controllers, cabinets, loop detectors, vehicle detection systems, and related hardware., • Construct and wire traffic signals, pull boxes, conduits, and interconnect systems., • Perform low voltage electrical work (<50V systems), including wiring, termination, and testing of communication cables, Ethernet, copper pairs, CCTV, dynamic message signs (DMS), and other ITS components., • Troubleshoot malfunctions in traffic signals, fiber networks, and low voltage systems; respond to emergency calls to restore functionality and ensure public safety., • Read and interpret blueprints, schematics, splicing matrices, as-built drawings, and traffic signal plans., • Ensure compliance with MUTCD standards, NEC (low voltage sections), OSHA safety regulations, and local traffic control guidelines., • Operate bucket trucks, digger derricks, trenchers, and other construction equipment as needed., • Document work performed, including splice records, test results, and maintenance logs., • Collaborate with engineers, contractors, and other trades to support project timelines and quality standards., • High school diploma or GED; technical/vocational training in electronics, telecommunications, or electrical systems preferred., • 3+ years of hands-on experience in fiber optic splicing/installation, traffic signal maintenance/construction, and/or low voltage electrical work., • Proven expertise in fiber optic fusion splicing (minimum loss performance) and testing (OTDR, OLTS)., • Experience building, installing, and troubleshooting traffic signal systems (controllers, detection, interconnects)., • Knowledge of low voltage electrical principles, wiring practices, and safety protocols., • Valid driver's license., • Ability to work at heights (poles, bucket trucks), in confined spaces, and in all weather conditions., • Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail., • Fiber Optic Association (FOA) certifications (e.g., CFOT, CFOS/O, CFOS/S)., • IMSA Traffic Signal Technician Level I/II or higher., • Experience with ITS devices (CCTV, radar/video detection, DMS, connected vehicle systems)., • Knowledge of Ethernet networking, IP communications over fiber/copper, and basic networking troubleshooting., • Ability to lift 50+ lbs, climb ladders/poles, bend, kneel, and work in trenches/aerial lifts.
