Job DescriptionJob Title: Site Safety and Health Officer (SSHO)Job Description The Site Safety and Health Officer (SSHO) leads construction supervision and site safety on complex federal projects. This dual-hat role combines overall field supervision with responsibility for enforcing site safety requirements, implementing the project Accident Prevention Plan, and ensuring compliance with EM 385-1-1. The SSHO oversees all phases of construction, coordinates multiple stakeholders, and uses project management software to keep work on schedule, within scope, and in full compliance with applicable regulations and contract requirements. Responsibilities • Provide overall supervision of general construction activities on federal projects, including renovations, new construction, site development, and excavation., • Plan, organize, and coordinate daily field operations to ensure work progresses according to project schedules and contract specifications., • Order and coordinate the procurement of tools, equipment, and materials so they are delivered at specified times to support work schedules., • Direct and coordinate supervisory personnel and subcontractors in planning and executing work procedures and interpreting specifications., • Coordinate various phases of construction to prevent delays and ensure efficient sequencing of trades and activities., • Confer regularly with supervisory personnel and labor representatives to address and resolve workforce complaints and grievances., • Collaborate with supervisory and engineering personnel, inspectors, and suppliers to resolve construction issues and continuously improve construction methods., • Serve as a primary point of contact with the Owner and Owner’s representatives, providing updates and addressing project-related concerns., • Write and maintain a detailed daily log of activities on the job site, documenting progress, issues, and safety observations., • Inspect work in progress to verify compliance with plans, specifications, quality standards, and safety requirements, and to ensure adherence to construction schedules., • Prepare or review reports on project progress, materials used, and costs, and adjust work schedules based on these reports to maintain project performance., • Direct workers involved in major maintenance or reconditioning projects for existing installations as needed., • Ensure all required federal, state, local, site, and contract reports are accurately completed, submitted, and filed in accordance with operational and government requirements., • Enforce site safety requirements and implement the project Accident Prevention Plan in accordance with EM 385-1-1., • Conduct daily safety inspections, identify and correct hazards, and document corrective actions., • Lead and conduct regular toolbox talks and other safety meetings to promote a strong safety culture on site., • Serve as the primary safety point of contact with Government representatives, responding to safety inquiries and coordinating safety-related activities., • Ensure NAVFAC and other applicable federal construction safety and quality requirements are understood and followed on site., • Use project management software such as RMS, Procore, P6, or MS Project to track progress, manage schedules, and document project activities., • Perform other duties as assigned to support successful project delivery and compliance with all contractual and regulatory requirements.Essential Skills, • At least 15 years of general construction supervisory experience in the federal sector, with some commercial sector experience considered., • Demonstrated experience supervising general construction projects, including renovations, new construction, site development, and excavation., • Comprehensive knowledge of general construction practices, methods, and sequencing on federal projects., • Minimum OSHA 30-hour safety certification., • Proficiency with project management software such as RMS, Procore, Primavera P6, and MS Project., • Experience working under EM 385-1-1 requirements and applying them in the field., • Knowledge of NAVFAC or similar federal construction standards and procedures., • Strong ability to interpret and enforce construction specifications, drawings, and contract documents., • Proven ability to lead and coordinate supervisory personnel, subcontractors, and field crews., • Experience conducting safety inspections, identifying hazards, and implementing corrective actions., • Strong written communication skills for maintaining detailed daily logs and preparing reports., • Effective verbal communication and interpersonal skills for working with owners, representatives, inspectors, suppliers, and workforce., • Ability to resolve construction problems and workforce issues in a timely and professional manner.Additional Skills & Qualifications, • SCIF (Sensitive Compartmented Information Facility) project experience is a plus., • Experience with federal construction projects involving secure facilities or specialized security requirements is advantageous., • Background in major maintenance or reconditioning projects for existing installations is beneficial., • Experience serving in a dual role combining site supervision and safety oversight is preferred., • Familiarity with developing and implementing Accident Prevention Plans is desirable.Work Environment This role is based on a federal installation at Fort Dix and is primarily field-oriented on active construction sites. The SSHO works closely with project teams, subcontractors, inspectors, and government representatives in a dynamic, schedule-driven environment. The position requires regular on-site presence to monitor work in progress, conduct safety inspections, and lead field operations. The work environment includes typical construction site conditions such as outdoor exposure, varying weather, uneven terrain, and active heavy equipment operations. The role involves frequent use of project management software and standard office tools for reporting and coordination, combined with significant time in the field overseeing construction and safety activities. Job Type & Location This is a Permanent position based out of Trenton, NJ. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $120000.00 - $140000.00/yr.
