This role focuses on integrating and transforming data from multiple systems — including clinical, operational, and revenue cycle sources — to support enterprise reporting, analytics, and data science. A Sr Data Engineer role requires the ability to mentor and coach junior and middle level career data engineers. Working within a cross-functional Agile team, the Data Engineer partners closely with BI developers, QA analysts, and data architects to deliver performant, governed data solutions aligned with Sound’s development standards. The role requires strong SQL skills and ETL development experience, familiarity with modern cloud tooling (such as ADF, dbt, Synapse, Snowflake, and Databricks), and a commitment to testing, optimization, and documentation. This position plays a foundational role in Sound’s transition to a modern data lakehouse architecture and the ongoing maturation of our data & analytics practice. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES • Design, develop, and maintain scalable data pipelines and integration workflows across SQL Server and cloud-based Azure environments, supporting a range of data domains including clinical, financial, and operational data., • Share your passion for staying on top of tech trends, experimenting with and learning new technologies, participating in internal & external technology communities, and mentoring other members of the engineering community. Evaluate and recommend new tools and technologies to enhance the data platform., • Perform unit tests and conduct reviews with other team members to make sure your code is rigorously designed, elegantly coded, and effectively tuned for performance, • Advise business stakeholders and product managers on data solution strategies, translating business needs into scalable, maintainable architectures, and proactively identifying opportunities to enhance the data platform., • Perform data analysis and architecture functions when needed, including designing, documenting, and prioritizing data-related functionality, structure, and dependencies., • Provide scope estimations, work planning guidance, and feedback during Agile ceremonies; work cross-functionally with BI, QA, architecture, and governance teams to advise on solutions and ensure on-time delivery of technical objectives., • Establish and refine best practices for unit testing, integration testing, and data validation, including building automation frameworks to improve quality and reduce deployment risk. Help establish and enforce best practices for version control (Git), CI/CD pipelines, and data pipeline monitoring., • Coach and mentor others in development standards for documentation, code quality, security, and compliance, ensuring all solutions meet internal controls, audit requirements, and industry best practices., • Lead code reviews, deployment activities, and design working sessions to ensure the development and deployment of high-quality data solutions., • Act as a trusted technical advisor to internal customers, including analysts, business users, and executives, by anticipating needs, recommending solutions, and ensuring technical feasibility and long-term scalability., • Mentor and coach junior engineers, champion reusable engineering patterns or AI, develop advanced documentation and reference architectures, and play a key role in evolving Sound’s data practice. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES • Expert-level proficiency in SQL with a proven track record of architecting, building, optimizing, and troubleshooting enterprise-scale data pipelines using advanced features of dbt, Azure Data Factory, Synapse, Databricks, and related modern tools., • Strong knowledge of Microsoft Azure data services, orchestration, and security best practices., • Background in a variety of data architectures, such as dimensional modeling, data vault, and lakehouse architectures, with a focus on supporting scalable analytics and self-service BI; experience with Delta Lake features (ACID transactions, time travel, schema enforcement/evolution) a plus., • Experience interpreting technical specifications to advise on technical design and Agile story creation, develop efficient ETL workflows, and ensure solutions align with enterprise architecture and long-term maintainability., • Demonstrated ability to collaborate with architects and BI leaders to align upstream data structures with semantic layers for analytics, AI, and self-service use cases., • Prior experience designing and implementing advanced testing frameworks for unit testing and data validation, as well as collaborating closely with QA teams to streamline UAT cycles and ensure high-quality deliverables., • Proven track record of diagnosing and resolving complex pipeline and data quality issues, applying root cause analysis and implementing long-term preventative solutions., • Experience managing and optimizing DevOps processes, including CI/CD pipelines, branching strategies, automated testing, release management, and multi-team coordination for production deployments, with tools such as GitHub Actions, Azure DevOps, or similar., • Significant hands-on experience with performance tuning of large-scale data workflows, leveraging query optimization techniques, distributed computing, and proactive monitoring to ensure scalability and reliability., • History of authoring and maintaining technical documentation for engineering standards, reference architectures, and reusable code assets, as well as leading peer reviews and cross-functional design sessions., • Experience evaluating and adopting emerging data engineering tools and technologies, with a focus on enhancing scalability, maintainability, and alignment with organizational strategy., • Hands-on experience migrating legacy systems to cloud platforms preferred, including parallel platform management during transition phases., • Experience working with healthcare data preferred, particularly within clinical, operational, and revenue cycle domains, including familiarity with data types such as claims, encounters, provider rosters, patient records, and utilization metrics. EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE • Minimum Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Data Science, Data Informatics, Engineering, or equivalent field., • 7+ years of experience in data engineering, ETL development, or backend data services, preferably within modern cloud-based data ecosystems.
