Job Description SUMMARY The Tax Accountant role focuses on managing specialized areas of taxation within the cannabis industry, including Sales & Use Tax, Cannabis Business Tax, and Excise Tax. Responsibilities include preparing and filing indirect tax returns, reconciling tax accounts, supporting audits, and ensuring regulatory compliance, including business licensing where required. The position requires a strong understanding of cannabis-related tax regulations and the ability to navigate a fast-paced, evolving compliance environment with accuracy and attention to detail. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES (the list is not all inclusive) · Prepares, reviews, and files Sales & Use Tax, Cannabis Business Tax, and Excise Tax returns accurately and timely. · Performs monthly tax account reconciliations, identifying and resolving discrepancies. · Assists with state and local tax audits, including gathering documentation, responding to inquiries, and working with auditors. · Maintains compliance with cannabis-specific tax regulations at the local, state, and federal levels. · Monitors legislative and regulatory tax law developments affecting the cannabis industry. · Supports business license applications and renewals, particularly those with tax implications. · Assists with the preparation and submission of applications for Federal Employer Identification Numbers (FEINs) for newly established entities, ensuring timely and accurate compliance with IRS requirements. · Provides support for lease accounting, fixed asset tracking, bank reconciliations, and other accounting functions as needed to ensure accurate financial reporting and operational efficiency. · Maintains an organized and audit-ready tax files and documentation. · Collaborates with internal departments (e.g., finance, legal, operations) to ensure proper tax treatment of transactions. · Identifies and recommends opportunities for process improvements in the tax function. · Perform other duties as assigned to support the team and organizational goals. ● Ability to work with and meet scheduled deadlines. ● Strong ability to communicate quantitative analysis and financial data. ● Ability to communicate clearly and effectively verbally and in writing. ● Ability to maintain strict confidentiality. CORE COMPETENCIES · Deep understanding of Sales and Use Tax, Cannabis Business Tax, Excise Tax, and Cannabis-specific compliance requirements at local and state levels. · Ability to perform reconciliations, identify discrepancies, resolve issues, and recommend process improvements. · Ability to ensure accuracy in filings, maintaining an organized documentation process. · Clear verbal and written communication skills; works effectively with finance, legal, operations, and other business units. · Maintains discretion with sensitive information while demonstrating high ethical standards. · Balances multiple deadlines, prioritizes tasks, and adjusts to a fast-paced, changing regulatory environment. · Demonstrates the ability to be flexible and work effectively across various sectors of the department as needed or requested by a direct supervisor. This includes the capacity to support other departments, ensuring seamless collaboration and responsiveness to organizational needs. PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS · Constantly: Walking, sitting at a desk, grasping/gripping, bending/stooping/squatting, finger dexterity, computer input, coordination of hand and eye. · Frequently: Standing for long periods of time, climbing stairs, and twisting. · Occasionally: Reaching above shoulder height, lifting 20-30 lbs., ability to do push/pull motions. Travel to site locations required. EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED ● 2+ years of progressively responsible accounting experience ● Bachelor’s degree with Accounting/Finance focus. ● Expert software knowledge of MS Office Suite applications ● Experience with general ledger functions and the month-end/year end close process. ● Experience in the cannabis industry a plus but not required. ● Experience with Acumatica, Dutchie and Metrc a plus but not required. ● Exercises exceptional time management skills and be able to meet deadlines.
