(FedPro-SDNY) POSITION REPORTS TO: Director, FedPro-SDNY FLSA STATUS: Exempt The City Bar Justice Center furthers access to justice by addressing unmet civil legal needs of New Yorkers struggling with poverty and other systemic socioeconomic barriers. The Justice Center mobilizes law firms, corporate legal departments, and other legal institutions to provide pro bono legal services, educates the public on pertinent legal issues, fosters strategic community relationships, and impacts public policy. The City Bar Justice Center annually provides high-quality, free civil legal services benefiting over 27,000 New Yorkers who lack the resources to hire private counsel. CBJC also relies on partnerships with our affiliate, the New York City Bar Association, as well as with law firms, corporate legal departments, solo practitioners, law schools, the courts, and other stakeholders. In the past year, over 3,000 pro bono attorneys donated services to support clinics and client matter work drawn from CBJC’s dozen civil legal services projects. PROGRAM FUNCTION FedPro-SDNY is an innovative initiative providing free, limited-scope legal assistance to pro se plaintiffs and defendants (including incarcerated individuals) litigating civil cases in the SDNY in areas such as employment discrimination (e.g. Title VII, ADA, ADEA), civil and prisoner rights, and a broad range of other claims touching on core individual rights. The staff and volunteers provide limited scope legal assistance at various stages of federal litigation, from service of a complaint right up to trial. JOB FUNCTION The City Bar Justice Center (CBJC) seeks a candidate committed to expanding access to justice to join our team in a Staff Attorney capacity for CBJC’s Federal Pro Se Legal Assistance Project operating in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York (FedPro-SDNY). This position reports to FedPro-SDNY’s Director. Position Overview The Senior Service Coordinator provides engagement and support services to program participants who have complex needs that require more intensive supports. The Senior Service Coordinator supports program participants using a person-centered model that supports individuals in maintaining their housing and developing and reaching goals that could include but are not limited to furthering their recovery, accessing community-based treatment and support services, connecting to community, family and social support networks, and exploring educational or vocational opportunities. Senior Service Coordinators are responsible for providing individual support as well as community building group activities. The Senior Service Coordinator assists the Program Director in the management of program as needed and provides back-up coverage when program director is absent. Senior Service coordinators will have the opportunity to supervise interns or newer staff. Midtown Community Justice Center offers a diversion program that provides people who are arrested an off-ramp from criminal prosecution: Project Reset. The Center for Justice Innovation operates Project Reset, New York City's pre-arraignment diversion program, in all five boroughs and the Midtown Community Justice Center operates the program in Manhattan. In collaboration with the District Attorney’s Offices, the Mayor’s Office of Criminal Justice, the defense bar and the New York Police Department, Project Reset seeks to create a proportionate response to low-level crime outside of the traditional criminal justice process. Project Reset-eligible community members receive the option to participate in a one session program in advance of their court date. Upon completion of the session, the District Attorney’s Office will decline to prosecute the case. The Midtown Community Justice Center also offers Rapid Reset, which offers the same diversion opportunity to Project Reset-eligible people who show up to court. The ATI Court, which is led by Administrative Judge Ellen Biben, seeks to forge a new response to individuals charged with felonies by linking them to community-based social services. The Court is the first of its kind, providing an innovative model for other jurisdictions seeking to develop and implement meaningful post-conviction sentencing options for individuals facing felony charges. Reporting to the Clinical Director, the Senior Social Worker, Jail Diversion will lead a team that conducts independent clinical assessments and drafts treatment recommendations for defendants being held in pretrial detention. The Senior Social Worker will supervise a team of social workers and counselors and oversee the referral, assessment, and treatment planning process—ensuring adherence to a strict timeline and that the process is completed as quickly as possible. They will also regularly conduct assessments and prepare treatment plans, including for more complex and demanding cases. Additionally, in coordination with the Clinical Director, the Senior Social Worker will design and refine workflows for the team, and oversee data entry. ACT seeks an experienced Director of Immigration Legal Services who will lead ACT’s immigration legal service provision and our team of immigration legal service professionals. This position is hybrid, and will not be approved to operate on a fully remote basis. The Director is expected to spend a minimum of three days per week working in-person from ACT offices, including the office where they are employed; to travel regularly to ACT’s offices in other cities for in-person supervision and meetings; and to participate in person at ACT organizational meetings, retreats, etc. Currently, the role reports directly to the Executive Director. In the near future, the position is expected to report to the National Legal Director. Key Responsibilities include: • Lead and manage the immigration legal services program. This will include coordinating closely with the Manhattan Felony Alternative to Incarceration (ATI) Court to identify and assess potential participants. The ATI Court, which is led by Administrative Judge Ellen Biben, seeks to forge a new response to individuals charged with felonies by linking them to community-based social services. The Court is the first of its kind, providing an innovative model for other jurisdictions seeking to develop and implement meaningful post-conviction sentencing options for individuals facing felony charges. Reporting to the Clinical Director, the Senior Counselor, Jail Diversion will lead a team that conducts independent clinical assessments and drafts treatment recommendations for defendants being held in pretrial detention. The Senior Counselor will supervise a team of counselors and oversee the referral, assessment, and treatment planning process—ensuring adherence to a strict timeline and that the process is completed as quickly as possible. They will also regularly conduct assessments and prepare treatment plans, including for more complex and demanding cases. Additionally, in coordination with the Clinical Director, the Senior Counselor will design and refine workflows for the team, and oversee data entry. The goal is to provide information that will enable defense attorneys, prosecutors, and judges to resolve cases as quickly as possible, significantly reducing the time people spend in pretrial detention. An essential and dynamic feature of the Senior Counselor’s role will be close collaboration with key external stakeholders. They will work regularly with New York City’s public defense organizations and other defense attorneys, prosecutors from the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office and the Office of the Special Narcotics Prosecutor, staff at the Department of Correction and Correctional Health Services, the judge and court staff from New York County Supreme Court who oversee the Felony ATI Court, and an array of community-based alternative to incarceration and community-based providers. Responsibilities will Include:- Review, sort, and analyze data using computer software programs such as Microsoft Excel.- Review financial records, complex legal and regulatory documents and summarize contents, and conduct research as needed. Preparing spreadsheets of financial transactions (e.g., check spreads, etc.).- Develop HCF case referrals including, but not limited to:- Ensure that HCF referrals meet agency and USAO standards for litigation.- Analyze data for evidence of fraud, waste and abuse.- Review and evaluate referrals to determine the need for additional information and evidence, and plan comprehensive approach to obtain this information and evidence.- Advise the HCF attorney(s) regarding the merits and weaknesses of HCF referrals based upon applicable law, evidence of liability and damages, and potential defenses, and recommend for or against commencement of judicial proceedings.- Assist the USAO develop new referrals by ensuring a good working relationship with client agencies and the public, and by assisting in HCF training for federal, state and local agencies, preparing informational literature, etc. - Assist conducting witness interviews and preparing written summaries. Qualifications:- Four (4) year undergraduate degree or higher in criminal justice, finance, project management, or other related field.- Minimum three (3) years of professional work experience in healthcare, fraud, or other related investigative field of work.- Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications including Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.- Proficiency in analyzing data that would assist in providing specific case support to the Government in civil HCF matters (E.g., Medicare data, Medicaid data, outlier data).- Communication skills: Ability to interact professionally and effectively with all levels of staff including AUSAs, support staff, client agencies, debtors, debtor attorneys and their staff, court personnel, business executives, witnesses, and the public. Reporting to the Accounts Payable & Procurement Manager, the Accounts Payable Coordinator will play a vital role in processing and maintaining all AP and Procurement functions for Brooklyn Law School while adhering to financial policies. Responsibilities include: • Review daily aging report and follow up on outstanding items., • Accurately distribute pre-paid expenses on payment vouchers., • Prepare and complete preliminary review of weekly electronic and bi-weekly check payment reports for management’s review/approval., • Process and execute payments to bank portal and print/mail checks., • Review/manage and resolve all payment returns., • Ensure monthly pre-paid postage report is forwarded to accounting., • Proactively review vendor statements and resolve discrepancies., • Efficiently monitor the AP inbox and promptly resolve both internal and external inquiries., • Maintain vendor files and documentation thoroughly and accurately, in accordance with company policies and accepted accounting practices., • Submit requests for expense reclassifications and journal entries, as necessary., • Assist AP Manager with all Procurement-related responsibilities (serving as the main point of contact for all technical troubleshooting inquiries)., • Assist Senior AP Specialist and AP Manager in preparing annual 1099/1096 filings, escheatment, and assistance with fiscal year close and annual audit., • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field is strongly preferred., • Minimum of 2 years of experience in accounts payable., • Strong planning, organizational and communication skills., • Ability to manage multiple tasks and work effectively with senior administrators, department heads, faculty, and others in a fast-paced environment., • Strong computer skills in MS Outlook, Word, and Excel., • Exceptional attention to detail with strong problem-solving skills., • Proficiency data entry and experience operating a ten-key adding machine by touch., • Ability to understand and apply best practice based on school financial policies, and federal regulations., • Excellent verbal, written, and customer communication skills., • Experience working in higher education or nonprofit., • Experience with Ellucian Colleague or similar ERP system.
