Job Description Job Title: Heavy Wheel Mechanic Pay: $28hr Job Description The Heavy Wheel Mechanic oversees the day-to-day operation and maintenance of the Barrier Transfer Machine (BTM) system to ensure safe, reliable, and efficient performance along the Interstate 30 corridor. This role combines hands-on mechanical work with leadership responsibilities, guiding a team of machine operators, mechanics, and traffic control technicians. The Heavy Wheel Mechanic maintains strict compliance with safety and environmental standards, manages preventive maintenance schedules, and serves as a primary point of contact for internal stakeholders and transportation authorities. Responsibilities • Oversee daily operations and maintenance of the Barrier Transfer Machine (BTM) system to ensure safe and efficient service delivery., • Monitor machine and equipment availability, status, and readiness, ensuring all inspections and logs are completed accurately each day., • Ensure all equipment is maintained according to manufacturer guidelines and internal standards., • Supervise routine inspections and preventive maintenance activities, promptly addressing defects or mechanical issues., • Coordinate with engineering teams or external vendors for complex repairs, system diagnostics, or equipment upgrades., • Maintain accurate maintenance records, service logs, and documentation for all equipment and activities., • Promote and enforce a safety-first culture, ensuring compliance with OSHA regulations, DOT standards, and internal safety procedures., • Conduct safety meetings, audits, and incident investigations, and implement corrective actions when needed., • Ensure adherence to Storm Water Protection regulations and other environmental standards during maintenance and operations., • Report and manage safety concerns, equipment failures, and operational issues in a timely manner., • Supervise, coach, and evaluate team members, including machine operators, mechanics, and traffic control technicians., • Provide onboarding, training, and ongoing guidance to staff, reinforcing best practices and safety protocols., • Address attendance, performance issues, and disciplinary matters in coordination with HR and leadership., • Foster a culture of professionalism, customer service, teamwork, and continuous improvement within the shop and field operations., • Maintain professional working relationships with transportation department representatives and other stakeholders., • Serve as the point of contact for on-site escalations, resolving conflicts, service disruptions, and operational concerns., • Support data reporting and communication related to project performance, safety metrics, and regulatory compliance., • Perform hands-on mechanical work on heavy equipment, including diagnostics, repairs, and component replacement., • Troubleshoot and repair hydraulic, electrical, and mechanical systems, including reading and interpreting schematics., • Perform electrical troubleshooting, hydraulic troubleshooting, A/C system diagnostics, and basic welding or cutting as needed., • Ensure all tools, equipment, and work areas are maintained in a clean, organized, and safe condition., • Work flexible hours, including early mornings, evenings, weekends, or during emergencies, to support continuous operations., • Comply with all company policies, including a zero-tolerance drug policy, and complete required safety and traffic incident training. Essential Skills • High School Diploma or GED., • Trade or Vocational School Certificate in Diesel Technology., • Associate’s degree or Automotive or Diesel Mechanics Certificate obtained from a program outside of high school., • Minimum 3–5 years of experience working with heavy equipment operations and/or maintenance., • Minimum 5+ years of heavy-duty mechanical experience (candidates with 3–5 years may also be considered)., • Previous experience in a lead or supervisory capacity is preferred, although formal management experience is not required., • Strong mechanical aptitude and familiarity with hydraulic, electrical, and mechanical systems., • Ability to read and understand schematics for electrical and hydraulic systems., • Proven electrical troubleshooting experience on heavy equipment or similar machinery., • Proven hydraulic troubleshooting experience on heavy equipment or similar machinery., • A/C system experience, including diagnosis and repair., • Basic welding skills; ability to use a cutting torch and perform basic MIG welding (preferred but not mandatory)., • Knowledge of OSHA safety regulations and best practices for safe shop and field operations., • Knowledge of DOT standards and transportation-related compliance requirements., • Understanding of environmental compliance guidelines, including Storm Water Protection regulations., • Basic computer skills, including the use of Microsoft Word, Excel, and related applications., • Excellent organizational skills, with the ability to manage maintenance schedules, documentation, and multiple priorities., • Strong verbal and written communication skills for interacting with team members and external stakeholders., • Proven team leadership skills, including coaching, training, and performance guidance., • Ability to work flexible hours, including early mornings, evenings, weekends, and during emergencies., • Must comply with a zero-tolerance drug policy., • Must complete a TXDOT-approved Traffic Incident Management course within 90 days of hire. Additional Skills & Qualifications • Ability to read and interpret detailed schematics, wiring diagrams, and hydraulic diagrams., • Excellent problem-solving ability, with a methodical approach to diagnosing complex mechanical and electrical issues., • Ownership of a personal set of tools suitable for heavy-duty mechanical work., • Experience performing electrical troubleshooting on diesel and heavy equipment systems., • Experience performing hydraulic troubleshooting, including pumps, valves, and cylinders., • Experience with A/C systems in heavy equipment, including charging and leak detection., • Welding experience, including use of a cutting torch and basic MIG welding (considered a plus, not a requirement)., • Previous experience working in a maintenance shop environment supporting heavy equipment or similar machinery., • Physical ability to climb onto equipment, crouch under machines, and lift up to 50 lbs., • Ability to work for extended periods sitting, standing, or walking outdoors in varied weather conditions., • Comfort working around noise, chemicals, and mechanical equipment in an industrial setting. Daily work involves hands-on interaction with heavy mechanical equipment, diesel systems, hydraulic components, electrical systems, and related tools and machinery. You should expect exposure to noise, chemicals, mechanical equipment, and varied weather conditions, including extreme heat, cold, rain, and wind. The role requires frequent climbing onto equipment, crouching under machines, and lifting up to 50 lbs, as well as extended periods of sitting, standing, or walking outdoors. Work hours may include early mornings, evenings, weekends, and occasional emergency call-outs to support continuous operations. Appropriate work attire and safety gear are required to meet shop safety standards and regulatory guidelines. Job Type & Location This is a Contract to Hire position based out of DALLAS, TX.
