Job Description JOB SUMMARY: The Surgical Technician will assist the Registered Professional Nurse in planning for, and carrying out the activities in elective surgical procedure and emergency procedures as the situation arises. The Surgical Technician is an integral part of the surgical team and the patients’ surgical experience. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: He/she will provide a positive and professional atmosphere so as to enhance the surgical experience and assure the smooth functioning of the ASC. 1. Scrub on all types of surgical procedures assigned., 2. Assist in setting up operating room for surgical procedures, including initial wiping down of surfaces., 3. Handle sterile linen, instruments, supplies, and maintain aseptic technique at all times., 4. Assist in keeping accurate sponge and needle counts and proper handling of specimens., 5. Clean and restock operating rooms after operative procedure., 6. Assemble special trays, instruments, etc. and wrap for processing., 7. Complete special assignments as indicated and necessary for the smooth functioning of the ASC. • Assume responsibility for personal growth and development by participating in continuing education programs/mandatory in-services and by initiating and giving an in-service as necessary., • Adhere to the ASC’s Policies & Procedures., • Assist in various areas of the ASC’s under supervision as necessary., • Works late as assigned in advance., • Flexes schedule to fulfill needs of the surgery center., • Uses appropriate work safety habits (including PPE)., • Performs other duties as necessary to ensure smooth running of surgery center., • Maintain CEU’s as required by the state., • Maintain certification if not grandfathered in. EDUCATION: High school education, or equivalent. Minimum of two year’s pertinent experience. CERTIFICATION REQUIRED: Meets NY state requirements for surgical scrub technologist. PHYSICAL QUALIFICATIONS: Standing for long periods (up to 8–10 hours). Lifting, pushing, or pulling 25–50 lbs. Frequent walking, bending, and reaching. Fine motor skills for handling instruments. Clear vision and ability to distinguish colors. Ability to hear and respond to verbal requests and alarms. Ability to wear PPE for extended periods (masks, gowns, gloves, lead). Exposure to bodily fluids, chemicals, and surgical equipment.

Responsible to execute tasks and skills with quality and safe care. All interactions must be aligned with the overall expectation of a positive patient experience. RESPONSIBILITIES: Performs cleaning of appropriate equipment, changing of bed linens, stocks appropriate supplies in the patient room/unit, and prepares rooms for anticipated admissions. Provide safe and competent care for patients with relationship to nutritional, skin integrity, elimination & hygiene needs including bathing, grooming, and patient comfort measures. Performs a wide variety of clinical duties under the direction/supervision of an RN. Including but not limited to patient vital signs, pulse oximetry, EKG, one to one and admission and discharge process. Perform correct procedures in the collection and disposition of some specimens. Demonstrate excellent communication skills, compassion and professionalism. Assist with safe ambulation, transferring, and demonstrates appropriate utilization of lift devices. Follows all safety initiatives for the department. Assist in post mortem care. Meets unit/department specific skills and competency expectations. Assist in timely and courteous responses to patient call lights and or any patient/family requests for assistance. REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: Minimum age requirement: 18 PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: Associates degree. Completion of one of the following is strongly preferred: Nursing Fundamentals, Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) certification, or one year experience as a medical assistant/technician in a health related facility. Excellent customer service and communication skills highly desired. EDUCATION: LICENSES / CERTIFICATIONS: PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: M - Medium Work - Exerting 20 to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or 10 to 25 pounds of force frequently, and/or greater than negligible up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects; Requires frequent walking, standing or squatting. For disease specific care programs refer to the program specific requirements of the department for further specifications on experience and educational expectations, including continuing education requirements.
