Job Description The Senior Youth Development Counselor role is part of the Residential Life leadership, ensuring 24-hour supervision, structure, and guidance for participants. The Senior Youth Development Counselor works collaboratively with the wider interdisciplinary team to create a therapeutic milieu in which each participant can reach their fullest potential, learn socially appropriate behavior and daily skills, and develop their talents while attending to their socio-emotional well-being. The Senior Youth Development Counselor is expected to uphold Good Shepherd Services Mission and demonstrate that “We See What Can Be” in the approach to participants. Job Title: Senior Youth Development Counselor Reports to: Residential Life Supervisor; Sharp House Location: 2207 University Avenue, Bronx, New York 10453 Hours: 40/hours (Non-Exempt) Position requires staff to be on site. Must be able to commit to Day, Evening, and/or Overnight Shift. Some weekends will be required. Salary Range: $44,600.00 - $49,600.00 Major Duties: • Execute all Youth Development Counselor responsibilities as outlined below., • Collaborate closely with the Program Director, Site Director, Residential Life Supervisor, and other Residential Life leadership to effectively implement Residential Life services., • Serve as a peer coach and mentor to new hires., • Lead and coordinate tasks during designated shifts, providing progress updates to support effective shift transitions and reporting to the broader residential leadership., • Prepare and actively participate in Treatment Team Meetings., • Undertake developmental assignments based on program needs and growth interests, such as providing guidance to team members, facilitating groups and meetings with staff and/or participants, etc., • Support the strengthening of participants' socio-emotional well-being through co-regulation techniques, supportive counseling, conflict mediation, and other emotional development strategies in a trauma-responsive manner. This is as guided by the agency, and program approaches such as Youth and Family Development, Sanctuary, and Safe Crisis Management., • Engage in continuous active efforts to have a positive relationship with all participants, including proactively repairing and restoring relationships when indicated., • In conjunction with emotional management, promote improved behavioral functioning among participants through the program’s behavioral interventions., • Assure the safety of participants through adequate on-site supervision and monitoring of their whereabouts while they are off-site as reasonably able., • Plan, lead, and engage participants in a variety of program activities, including recreational, family, tutoring, cultural, and special activities., • Provide daily care for participants, including but not limited to food, personal hygiene, household care, laundering, and medical support, while partnering with participants to teach and strengthen their daily living skills for greater self-sufficiency., • Prompt and escort participants to and from appointments as assigned., • Monitor and support participants’ education through school escorting, attendance checks, homework assistance, and other school support activities., • Provide medication administration assistance to participants as trained and monitor participants’ medical well-being for feedback to and support from Health Services., • Maintain documentation through logs, incident reports, etc., • Engage and involve participants' families in collaboration with the interdisciplinary team, including through regular notifications, supporting family time activities, and responsiveness to family queries., • Actively participate in supervision and attend all meetings and training, including but not limited to program meetings, community meetings, and treatment team meetings., • Effectively use and practice the Sanctuary Model tools of safety plans, community meetings, psycho-educational groups, team meetings, red flag reviews, treatment planning conferences (or similar), and self-care in the department/program to create a non-violent and trauma-sensitive culture., • Promote and model the seven Sanctuary Model commitments to create a non-violent, trauma-sensitive culture., • Integrate the Sanctuary Model SELF (Safety, Emotional Management, Loss and Future) framework into daily practice to ensure quality care and an effective work environment., • Continue to meet all the qualifications for a Youth Development Counselor., • Minimum of two and a half (2.5) years as a full-time Youth Development Counselor (or full-time equivalent) with Good Shepherd Services, • Rated as “Satisfactory” or “Successful” performer in key competencies on annual performance evaluation (especially with “accountability”, “judgment & decision making,” “building relationships”, “Sanctuary and YFD”), • Completed all required training in Agency culture (LGBTQ, MEO, YFD); foundations of TIP; and all Sanctuary, SCM training, and other mandated training., • Employee in good standing, i.e., has not been on a PIP within the past year., • Consistently adheres to schedule, attendance policy (sick / paid time off), and other programmatic expectations., • Consistently completes and has proven competency with administrative tasks associated with the position (incident reports, justice center, logs, med admin, etc.) Good Shepherd Services is committed to providing an inclusive and welcoming environment for all members of our staff, participants, volunteers, subcontractors, and vendors.
